RRRC's 2nd Reading Tournament: Introduction and Guidelines

i.e.
Cattle Valley books x and y

Comfort Food is listed as 0 pages on goodreads but the hardcover is on amazon as 192 pages. I assume that's okay.

I'm happy for you to link, list the applicable books, or put the series name and books in that series, noting the author's name - Eg Cattle Valley series, books 1-3 by Carol Lynne.

I'll allow it... very borderline :)

That is fine, Dina :)

It is here (message 3): http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...
Note: I have allowed an extra name to be marked off the Chubby Chunkster books greater than 750 pages (that is, 7 names may be marked off if you undertake a massive tome). I figure if anyone is not put off by such a large volume, there should be an additional bonus involved :)

Is there a ruling on anthologies? Often the individual story is not 150 pages but the book is - so would it count if you read the whole book? Still with only 4 names for the book, of course.
Yes - so long as the whole book is read and only 4 names are checked off from the list for the whole anthology.
To ensure this is more consistent with the novella ruling, the whole anthology must be read - not just two stories (as previously noted on message 236) to ensure the 150 page count.

Hi Tania - you're clear to read this one :)

I would like to link everyone's names on the participants' thread to their actual message number but I've run out of characters when I do it my basic way... :(

Go to (some html is ok)
Copy link - a href="http://www.goodreads.com">my link text
include the first < before a (if I did it here it wouldn't show
After goodreads.com and before " add in the /topic/show/539476-rrrc-s-2nd-reading-tournament-the-name-game-participants-list
Then to add each individual you right click on their post on the date/time stamp and copy/paste from the url - #comment_xxxxxx add back the " (with no spaces)
Then put something like Post #xx where it says (my link text).
Not sure it will save characters but it sure looks better.
As an example of finished product, my post from another time, another place .... far, far away
Sandra: Post #4
and as code
Sandra: a href="http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4... #4
Hope this helps, if not PM me.

When you see something like this in the url, just add it in - ?order=a&page=2
Have fun :D

That's amazing Jane - Thanks.

Exactly the question I wanted to ask! :)

Do those names sound the same? I'll go check...
It seems that Regan is pronounced 'ree-guhn'
And Reagan is pronounced as either 'ree-guhn' or 'rai-guhn'.
So I'll accept these names as interchangeable.

Thanks Sandra! I'll try to absorb this information tonight :)

Thanks for giving an extra name for long tomes, Jane. I'll be listening a book next whose MMPB clocks at almost 1500 pgs.

Whoa - I didn't know there were any books of nearly 1,500 pages!! (Just joking) You are a sucker for punishment DG!

the one i'm listening to is 960 in hardcover...so it would probably be close to the same if it comes out in MMP

It's a series I've been meaning to get back to for a few years (Outlander.) I listened books 1-4 almost back to back and then discovered GR and my TBR exploded. It's difficult to read a book that long when you know in the same time, you can read five 350 pg. books.
But I promised myself that May will be the month of The Fiery Cross. :)

According to GR and Amazon, the MMPB version of The Fiery Cross is almost 1500 pgs.
I've seen the hardcovers and the font and spacing is on the small size so it doesn't surprise me that the MMPB has that many more pages.

The Rogue Settler's Mine 6 - is on the loose-id website as a Novel Plus. Their categorisation of novel is over 35000 words.
Oh, and for all those still searching - the heroine is Arianna.

Ok - I agree. I've adjusted the rule as follows:
750 - 1,000 pages: check off 7 names
1,000 + pages: check off 10 names
Page numbering to be based off the mass market paperback edition where possible.

Don't worry about it too much if you can't - I read three other books in the series so I'll put them under the series ruling.

Ok - I got Wan's to work. BUT it uses even more 'characters'!! (I am not referring to the tournament but the number of letters allowed in a post.)
So: if anyone would like me to link to their post from message 3 (Participant's thread) - please let me know before I remove all the links to get my 'characters' down to a manageable size :(

Yay - no problems Tania! This is fine on its own :)

I was just checking the msgs to see if that was asked and spend quite sometime until the last message :D Yes, Jane, can we use Mackayla for Makayla? :)

Reading the FAQ I'd think so - they're pronounced the same.

I have a few like those with one letter difference in spelling - Julianna for Juliana or Nathanial for Nathaniel but I figured that the pronunciation would be the same so they were good to go.

Thanks Tania, I saw that in FAQ as well but not really good at the phonetical thing,(it can be tricky sometimes in a foreign language)

I was also disappointed that not one name from the Tairen Soul series (5 books) was in the list. Granted it's fantasy, but given other obscure names in the list, I hoped I can tick off atleast one.. :(

Jane,
I know you have the final say on this and I'm willing to follow your judgement. But, I wanted to point out that I don't think the question was on how Madelyn is pronounced, but the fact that Madeline is pronounced both ways. Some people say it like the cookies, sounds like Madeleine. Other people pronounce it like Madelyn, with the short i, most notable case being the actress Madeline Kahn.

I haven't read it yet, but does Ellysetta get called Ellie? If so, there is one ;)

I understand that, and certainly I am happy to go with that. It is just that I went to three different websites for pronounciation and none of them mentioned that Madelyn could be pronounced with the long 'i'.
If you can pull a pronounciation website that has that allowance, I'm happy for you to use it :)
(That was how Ashlynn/Ashling was allowed, so I wouldn't go back on that same type of ruling...)
I'm sorry - I am not big on Hollywood etc - I've never heard of Madelyn Kahn... I also hadn't heard of Aaliyah who seems to be some music star. So I have to rely heavily on pronounciation sites. :)
