Heather | 356 comments Cracked has done some articles on why certain monsters resonate with certain people/situation/political climates.

Namely, zombies are faceless consumerism, an all-devouring crowd with not enough identity to fill a thimble between them, and vampires are fast-breeding parasites draining the system.

Very interesting observation. I commented on another thread a day or two ago about why zombies don't scare me (society has inured me to them). I also said that these days vampires annoy me, but I wasn't sure exactly why until just now. As I get older, more cynical, antisocial and apolitical, the harder it is to scare me.

Kit | 146 comments Zelda from pet semetery terrified me for years.

but I think the alien from Alien taps into so many primal fears that it wins hands down for me

message 159: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments Zelda scarred me a hell of a lot, too, when I was a kid. That twisted back, her evil cackle, those spider leg thin fingers. The thought that a disease could do that to you seriously freaked me out.

Heather | 356 comments Sugarplum Fairy from (view spoiler).

You never see her doing anything but dancing, but she's got nested mouths like a leach, and there's blood on the walls in the last scene she's shown in.

message 161: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 1131 comments I'm so NOT a vampire kind of Guy, however, the vampires of "30 Days of Night" I thought held what I think the word 'primal' represents and the way vampires should be thought of. They were wicked scary and the image of them eating stays with you.

message 162: by Kit (new)

Kit | 146 comments The Alien from the original Alien. A monster that is nearly indestructible, and who's design is as beautiful as it is horrific.

message 163: by Jenn (last edited Jul 31, 2013 06:23AM) (new)

Jenn (ace-geek) Cthulhu, hands down. Pyramid Head comes in second for me. I find both of them interesting and frightening. I would be almost tempted to meet them if they existed but I'd be terrified all the same.

message 164: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) Thaddeus from the first season of American Horror Story freaked me out and definitely gave me feelings of dread and unease when I had to go to my basement.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 957 comments Kit wrote: "The Alien from the original Alien. A monster that is nearly indestructible, and who's design is as beautiful as it is horrific."

I agree. Think this would be my pick

message 166: by Michael (new)

Michael Robertson (michael2402) The infected from 28 days later freaked me out.

message 167: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Sleestaks from Land of the Lost. Creeped me out when I was 5, and does to this day.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments The Blob!

message 169: by [deleted user] (new)

Halloween - that painted William Shatner mask still creeps me out. I want to say Damien from the Omen but he's real.

message 170: by [deleted user] (new)

For me, it's totally the monster in The Crate.

Creepshow.

message 171: by David (new)

David Haynes | 3257 comments I'm not sure if he qualifies as a monster but Pinhead from Hellraiser has always given me the creeps.

message 172: by R.M.F. (new)

R.M.F. Brown Those tribble things in Star Trek are pretty scary. They're cute, furry, make soothing noises, but are so insidious, and breed like tribbles. Within a week, 2 tribbles can multiply into a million, and half your planet has starved to death because all your food went on feeding them!

message 173: by Squire (last edited Aug 06, 2013 01:24AM) (new)

Squire (srboone) | 1043 comments There's been a lot of creations that have scared me over the years, but after a while, most lose their effectiveness: Freddy becomes mundane, Jason become a joke, Michael Myers is something in between, etc. Two things that have not lost their shock value for me, however, are...

The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz

and

The Child Catcher from Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.

As I get older, I realize how ingeniously loathsome and nasty a creation both of these really are.

Spot on with those two! I forgot about them!
I can hardly bear to look at the Joker in the original series of Batman. He literally turns my stomach.

message 175: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments Young man: Sheriff its in there!
Sheriff: Whats in there son?
Young Man: The Blob!

Come on you mean to tell me a giant brown substance that gets massively bigger until it swallows you whole isnt scary enough?! Ahhh!

message 176: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) Yeah, I remember being terrified of the Child Catcher and the Wicked Witch when I was a kid. The Flying Monkeys freaked me out too......also the Oompa Loompas from the original Willie Wonka movie. I recall the banshee in the Disney movie "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" was pretty scary, too.

message 177: by Jeremiah (new)

Jeremiah Boydstun I'm totally freaked out by worms, parasites, or anything that attaches to the human body, so I was, and continue to be completely repulsed by the alien slugs in The Puppet Masters (1994), adapted from the Heinlein novel of the same name. Also, the worms in the 1976 film Squirm are totally disgusting. Finally, the face huggers in the Alien films are just about the most terrifying thing ever. Not sure if these really qualify as monsters, so I will say that Giger's alien, of the Alien series, is probably the greatest monster of all time.

message 178: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (darkstarcassidy) | 105 comments Those kids from Trick~r~treat in the bus with those cheap masks on really creeped me out

I would consider Jeepers Creepers a good modern day monster movie. I liked the 1st one a lot. I don't remember hating the 2nd one but I don't remember all of it!

message 187: by Josephine (last edited Sep 30, 2013 07:55AM) (new)

Josephine Nolan (filmsandbooks) Basically, any creature, convincingly conveyed, who amorally sees human's as food (a hunter). The Alien monster, a really good vampire (like Barlow in Salem's Lot) (vampires as they were meant to be, not romanticized); and even zombies, plus twisted human beings (psychopaths, sociopaths such as Hannibal Lecter).

Not scary, and that's a whole different topic, are things like Chucky (the doll) and most ghosts, plus other monsters who don't feel like hunter/killers, but just seem gimicky, tricky or naughty (Poltergeists, etc)).

I think hunter-mosnters preys on our deepest fears. Through the centuries, we've been the top of the food chain, but our genetic memories probably remember being the prey. Also, maybe I feel a little guilty that we prey on other animals:)

Why yes, she was scary. Still creeps me out thinking about her.

I don't know if this counts but the girl ghost from Honogurai Mizu no soko kara http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Wat... still scares me when I think about her. Note: I do not mean the 2005 American remake.

Erin (ems84) | 9060 comments The Thing was pretty creepy.

Mehmet | 1241 comments The Alien creature in the Alien movies is my number one best horrifying creature and i recently saw Shivers and found the parasite creature very scary in its simplicity !

message 199: by Grampy (last edited Feb 21, 2014 08:27PM) (new)

Grampy (goodreadscomgrampy) Without a doubt, the most horrifying creature ever invented was the guy who thought up the whole "Saw" series of horror porn. He/she HAS to be horrifying to even conceive of all that stuff. Sure wouldn't want to live next door to him/her!

But I agree with J.B. about politicians. They get scarier every year.

message 200: by Dave (new)

Dave Pope | 53 comments I go with "The Thing" as well.
