Pam Henson | 58 comments I was reading "Swamplandia!" when the business I've worked for 21yrs for was bought by another business. We had 2 weeks to transition. I think I associate "Swamplandia!" with this move and cannot pick this book up again. Maybe its the alligator theme park (old or new job?) or the eclectic family (new job). Usually, books are my escape from the real world not a reminder.. HAS anyone else had an odd book association like this?

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments I read Tender Mercies when I was home with a broken leg. I've got a million of 'em!

Sarah | 13814 comments There are a ton of books I associate with reading in the Adirondacks during the summers of my childhood and teenage years. Those books bring back specific smells and tastes and the sound of rain on a tin roof.
Lessee...A Prayer For Owen Meany, Stranger in a Strange Land, Jaws, Fletch, all of the Col. S.P. Meek dog books. The library had very few new titles, so it was an eclectic mix.

I remember where I was at and what I was doing more than I remember what senses I experienced.

Helena | 1056 comments I always associate books with music- whatever music I happened to be listening to while I read the book or I'll hear a song and think of the book I was reading when I heard the song.

Louise I read Inkheart while I was pregnant with my daughter. I was so sick with nausea, that I was lying on the couch sucking ice cubes made from water with salt and sugar, so as to get some nourishment without throwing up.
I really associate that book with that time.

If I'm feeling particularly depressed about the world, I can't read books about poverty or job losses or the rise of the plutocracy or anything like that. I think it was The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism that I was looking through at the library a few months ago, fully intending to read it, and I just couldn't. It was like a wave of nausea swept over me.
