Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 7 comments Lol. It's fun to do that, isn't it? I haven't seen any of the Scary Movie movies, but I know from watching the ads that they spoof a lot of movies.

I love horror movies, too, but I'm kind of a wimp about certain things. I took my daughter and her friend to see 'Inception' and really liked it a lot.

Kat (kat2011) | 68 comments Every time I watch Scream now I can only think of the comedy of Scary Movie 1 LOL

I went to see Piranha 3D because it got good reviews and I wanted to see Richard Dreyfus' cameo. I was also a big fan of Elizabeth Shue in the 80's and was interested to see her back on the big screen. I had to walk out. I got so grossed out by the relentless carnage it started to give me an anxiety attack.

Do you find the same thing happens when reading a particularly gruesome book?

message 5: by Scott (new)

Scott Baker | 148 comments I loved Pirahna 3D because it was so over the top. Unfortunately, I saw it on video and not in the theater, so I missed a lot of the sight gags.

message 6: by Lori Ann (new)

Lori Ann Bonfitto (bonfitto) | 26 comments @Gatorman,
Don't have the same problem with words on page. I seem to have a tolerance for reading what I can't watch on scream. And the funny thing is, I write stuff I would never be able to watch.

message 7: by Scott (new)

Scott Baker | 148 comments Starry wrote: "Pirahna 3D was one of those horror movies that's so bad it's actually 'good'? Wow..., I figured it would just be gore and dismembered limbs. Are the 3D fx the only reason to see it in the theaters?"

It is mostly gore and dismembered limbs, but since they were done in 3D they were awesome. But sometimes you need to forget about plot and characters and just watch a fun movie.

For the most part I'd have to disagree. The build up in reading horror and actually getting into the heads of the characters brings layers upon layers to my imagination. Movies stifle that since they only have so long to get the story out.

Kate Bowyer (kate_bowyer) | 27 comments Starry wrote: "Yeah, movies tend to be more of an immediate gratification type medium when it comes to the genres like horror, I think? But what about psychological horror like 'Sixth Sense"? Wasn't there a pre..."

Sixth Sense was one of those few gems that really did it right. The build up was there and then you were hit in the gut with a twist. Love that feeling!

message 10: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 7 comments Sixth Sense was one of those few gems that really did it right.

That's for sure!

I'm also a huge fan of The Shining. That movie scares me way more than the book. But my kids think it's just blah. Even the "Here's Johnny" scene didn't faze them.

message 11: by Scott (new)

Scott The movie isn't scary at all but the book was terrifying. Jack Nicholson is just so ridiculous.

message 12: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments I don't know. I like The Shinning. It had some great atmosphere. The woman who played the wife annoyed me, though.

message 13: by Scott (new)

Scott Baker | 148 comments I like the version with Steven Webber better. Not only was it filmed at the Stanley hotel, but the plot was more in tune with the book.

message 14: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments I like both, myself. For different reasons.

message 15: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Starry wrote: "Jack Nicholson wasn't credible to me because he already looked crazy to begin with, but I did feel the movie was scarier than the tv version. Those twin girls were freaky!"

I think we've had some deep discussions here about Nicholson being too known for playing crazy and therefore wasn't right for the role. I disagreed with this view.

Jason, Shelley Duvall can't act AT ALL and was bloody awful and awkward as Wendy. I cringed every time she had a scene. The worst was when she was in the office using that radio to contact help. My God, they probably took 100 takes and it still looked and sounded painful. Wish I could find a clip of it.

30 Second Bunnies in The Shining.

message 16: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Well I read recently that Kubrick literally tortured the hell out of Duvall to get the scared version of Wendy he got. So I sorta feel bad for her and yet I want to hit her in that movie. Mostly because Wendy wasn't a snivelling pain in the ass. I saw her as stronger than that.

Courtney | 23 comments Amanda wrote: "Well I read recently that Kubrick literally tortured the hell out of Duvall to get the scared version of Wendy he got. So I sorta feel bad for her and yet I want to hit her in that movie. Mostly be..."

I'm not sure if Kubrick did it to get that version of Wendy, but I did see an interview with Duvall a long time ago, and she claimed he had her in tears constantly. He would retake even the smallest scene 50, 60 times - but he was famous for being an anal-retentive asshole anyway, and she is a terrible actress. I'm not sure why he didn't just replace her when he realised she couldn't give him what he wanted.

message 18: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments How was she even picked as Wendy? Surely there were some great actresses who could have filled that role beautifully. I haven't seen all her movies, but she is just not a natural at acting, and it shows from what I've seen.

Maybe her best performance was as the one night stand in Annie Hall when she gave Alvy lockjaw from having to give oral for so long.

Alvy Singer: I think, I think there's too much burden placed on the orgasm, you know, to make up for empty areas in life.
Pam: Who said that?
Alvy Singer: It may have been Leopold and Loeb.

Gatorman | 8320 comments Scott wrote: "I like the version with Steven Webber better. Not only was it filmed at the Stanley hotel, but the plot was more in tune with the book."

I agree, although I enjoy the Kubrick version simply for the creep factor and don't look at it as a faithful adaptation.

message 20: by Scott (last edited May 05, 2011 07:13AM) (new)

Scott I thought Shelley was pretty good in 3 Women.

message 21: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I thought she was OK in Popeye...but is that a compliment?

message 22: by Scott (new)

Scott I'm afraid not.

message 23: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 8320 comments Popeye is unwatchable.

message 24: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments But she's a natural Olive Oyl, who is awkward and jerky by nature.

message 25: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Yeah as a kid I liked that movie now I immediately click away from it.

message 26: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3233 comments She was too weak a character in The Shining. That's what annoyed me the most. Her acting, too, of course. I don't think I've seen her in much else, though. Thankfully, I was spared the Popeye movie.

message 27: by Scott (new)

Scott I hated it even as a kid.

message 28: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 7 comments Jack Nicholson is just so ridiculous.

La la la la la la...I can't hear you!! ;)

I love, love, love the original "The Shining", warts and all. I rank it as my number one, best ever, top-of-the-line horror movie. (And, yeah, I understand that most people wouldn't agree with me on this.)

How about sci fi horror? Anyone like 'Alien'? This is probably my favorite #2 horror movie. And if anyone dares to diss Sigourney Weaver, well, I'm taking my DVDs and going home... (jk!!)

message 29: by Scott (new)

Scott Alien is okay; Resurrection is the one I really like.

message 30: by Scott (new)

Scott Baker | 148 comments I liked ALIEN. I thought it was a good blend of horror and sci-fi. ALIENS was a great action flick.

message 31: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Starry wrote: "Well, she was good at screaming, shrieking, and acting hysterical though, right? ;)"

No! She even sucked at this. An example is her simpering, phony weeping on the stairs when she's hitting Jack with a bat. Another Awkward! moment from Shelley Duvall.

message 32: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Alien and Aliens are fantastic. Hated Resurrection. I thought most people did.

message 33: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Haha I liked all of the Alien movies but then I like Joss Whedon ;)

message 34: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Wow. You have unique taste in men. Thought this Whedon guy was going to be some hunk, like Ray Winstone.

message 35: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) lol nope just a good writer. He created Buffy the vampire Slayer and I loved that. i like his ideas not him specifically, lol

Bandit (lecturatoro) | 8821 comments Tressa wrote: "Wow. You have unique taste in men. Thought this Whedon guy was going to be some hunk, like Ray Winstone."

haha, I would think nothing says "unique taste in men" like calling Ray Winstone a hunk :)
Joss Whedon is a sci-fi genius plus he gives the world hunks like...Nathan Fillion

message 38: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Ray Winstone is a Sexy Beast.

message 40: by Scott (new)

Scott Baker | 148 comments Joss Whedon is a fantastic writer. I love the way (like in the second season finale of Buffy) he can crank up the tension and suspense, but still infuse touches of humor and make it work. He was an inspiration to my own work.

message 41: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Bandit, Beowulf is one of my favorite poems, but I hated the movie. I was so psyched about it but they turned it into a Disney musical. I like that Sexy Beast pic of Ray Winstone better than the fake Beowulf pic.

message 42: by Scott (new)

Scott I liked his X-Men comics, for the most part.

message 43: by Bandit (new)

Bandit (lecturatoro) | 8821 comments oh, I sorta liked Beowulf, I liked the animated version of Angelina Jolie :)

message 44: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I hated every single thing about that movie.

message 45: by Scott (new)

Scott It looks terrible.

Haha. Didn't catch that one at first. Which do you prefer, the real one or the fake?

message 50: by Bandit (new)

Bandit (lecturatoro) | 8821 comments The real one, of course, but she wouldn't fit into my tv, so I had to make due with the movie :)
