I'm in the midst of Mr. Penumbra's as well; am enjoying it - an interesting juxtaposition of the old (paper books, reading, old book stores) and new (Google, computer searches). A modern day quest of sorts, and a nice light read.

message 28464: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've just finished The Divide by Nicholas Evans by Nicholas Evans and Plum Lovin' (Stephanie Plum, #12.5) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

The Divide started off so well but the plot did get quite slow halfway through the book. I did wish it would speed up at times but the story did remain strangely engaging. The last 60 or 70 pages of the novel were just as gripping and compelling as the first half of the novel. To tell the truth, I enjoyed the family drama sub-plot a lot more than I liked the murder mystery plot but I think that was probably because I didn't like the character of Abbie all that much so I found it hard to care about what happened to her. I loved all the vivid and wonderful descriptions of the Montana setting and landscape that made me feel like I was actually there. Nicholas Evans has got a great writing style and I love his use of language and imagery. I gave this novel 3½ stars!
My full review can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I love all the regular Stephanie Plum novels but I'm not sure I like these between the numbers novellas. I was very disappointed by Plum Lovin'. Nothing much happened in it and it was extremely dull and boring. It wasn't anywhere near as funny as the regular novels do be and I really hate the supernatural element in the novella. I gave it 1½ stars!
My review can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Now I'm a few chapters into The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly by Jennifer Donnelly.

Ami E. Bowen (skayda) | 26 comments I read Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher , Asha, about a year ago and thought it was very interesting, though some of it reminded me of a made for tv Lifetime movie. lol. Paula, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine, #1) by Ransom Riggs was an awesome book. I can't wait for the sequel. Well, even though it's been going much slower than normal for me reading-wise I'm finally at the halfway mark with Daniel Waters 's Kiss of Life (Generation Dead, #2) by Daniel Waters . I read the first book, Generation Dead (Generation Dead, #1) by Daniel Waters , awhile ago and forgot all about reading the sequels til a few months ago. Then I thought; well, since all three are now out I might as well get them all read. I am hoping the second half of "Kiss of Life" is better than the first half and that the third book; "Passing Strange" is better than the second altogether. lol. Happy Reading! ^_^

T.V. LoCicero (tvlocicero) | 3 comments Browsing at a B&N, I came across an autographed, remaindered copy of A Widow's Story, a memoir by Joyce Carol Oates, a writer I knew about 40 years ago when she and her husband Raymond Smith were living in Detroit. She makes frequent references to those days in this book, and so far I'm finding it impressive and touching.

Night Shift is one of the few by Stephen King I've read (generally dislike horror), and is the reason why, to this day, I cannot sleep at night if the closet door is open even an inch. :-\

message 28489: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 185 comments I finished Snow Falling on Cedars which I ended up enjoying. I thought the novel was well written and ultimately I wanted to find out what happens in the end. My only complaints would be that at times it got a little too wordy and it wasn't one of those reads that I just couldn't put down.

Next I'll read The Glass Lake.

Basically, a book for beginners or those with mild interest in the subject. Light-toned and fun to experiment with, but not something I'd recommend to those with a serious attitude towards this branch of fortune-telling.

Hi Paula - I loved the book. I was hooked from the beginning - had a hard time putting it down. I was completely surprised by the ending.
