Here's the folder for comments about our first week reading. Please post a spoiler alert if necessary if revealing any major plot points. (Mostly a reminder for later ;)

So I have finished the reading for this week and I really had to force myself to stop at the 3 chapters.
So far I am finding some really likable characters. First, Casper ten Bloom. What a kind man and father he is. And such a wise teacher. Also, she was surrounded by people who care for and guide her. You can see where Corrie was raised to become the woman we know she will.
Another point that I noticed, is her sister's response to the issue of how to not wear the unstylish hat. She would not be sneaky about it because it was not honest. Even as a small child, she wouldn't change her hat after leaving the house. A small matter, but she would not deceive her aunt. Since we know the book is about hiding Jews, which is deceptive by nature, even though for the very best of reasons, it will be interesting to see how the family handles these challenges to their integrity.
Your thoughts?

Gabriella (stardust_126) | 131 comments Hey, well I have finished the reading for this week too, and so far I am just loving learning about Corrie Ten Boom`s life. i only read it in the nighttime and I was actually afraid that I was going to be left behind, but it turned out I wasn`t. Yes, casper Ten boom is a very kind and generous man, and he always has thoughts of wisdom to share. What they were doing was decptive by nature, but i don`t think they will make a very big deal about lying a little bit or being sneaky at first, but maybe it will get harder as time goes on. I`m sure we are already starting to apprehend the events that are going to come soon in the book.

Andrea | 13 comments Yes, since we know the basic premise of the book, it's very cool to see how the language and stories in these first few chapters foreshadow things to come without giving too much away. Corrie's past memories are woven artfully to show us how the past effects the future. I love how Corrie says in the preface that, “Today I know that such memories are the key not to the past, but to the future. I know that the experiences of our lives, when we let God use them, become the mysterious and perfect preparation for the work He will give us to do.” This book is making me ponder on my own life's preparation, and what awaits me. I'm already applying so many things about this book in my life.

I wish I could be more like Corrie's Dad both as a parent and as a friend. I love this description of him, "“That was father's secret: not that he overlooked the differences in people; that they didn't know they were there.” Also, the way he handled Corrie's question about "sexsin" was absolutely priceless! He so eloquently put into words just how I feel about protecting my own children about media that's just not appropriate for their age.

I'm really loving this book! I can't believe I hadn't heard about it before now. After reading this book, I hope that I'll be better about radiating "love, peace, and joy” like Corrie.

Lanetta | 34 comments I have never been in a book club and have only attended one book discussion my whole life...with that said I don't really know what is suppose to happen. After reading that you choose to do the Hiding Place I checked out the audio from the library I work and have listened to the book on the way to work and home. I don't know how everyone was able to stop after the three chapters. I wasn't able to and just keep listening and have now finished the whole book. It is a book I will reread again, maybe I'll recheck it out and this time follow the schedule.... There are so many wonderful lessons in the book. At church so much of what was said had me ponder on the lessons and events in the book (even though for someone who hadn't read the book there was nothing similar) I just wanted to tell everyone to read the book. I look forward to seeing what a book discussion is like and taking part in it.

Lanetta, my book club here in my neighborhood mostly talks about golf. ;) I met 2 of the ladies at the gym, and they knew I love to read because we talked about books while we worked out. I wonder what they talk about on the golf course.
I also am having a hard time stopping with just the 3 chapters per week The only way I can do it is that I am reading several other books besides. And I also am doing it as an audiobook. So I put it on my iPhone in playlists that match the schedule. But the schedule is only a guide. It's mostly a guide so that we can talk about things without spoiling parts for readers that aren't ~there~ yet.
Aren't there some great life lessons in this story? Anytime I mention that I am reading this book to someone that has read it, they just go on and on about how wonderful it is! I need to go finish Chap. 6 so I can talk about it with you all!
