at the end, when joe is not reachable ... is he dead. he would have never left his desk.

Cindy's so right. Joe's "disappearance" is there to highlight just how false the perceived culture of employment is, that intimacy of co-conspirators -- all that stuff that goes in the pressurized atmosphere of the workplace. Joe's in NY, or LA, or Houston, or Atlanta, doing fine, we'll never know. But somebody who can't let go will Google him eventually and find out he's just moved on, unaffected. He's a survivor. Been there, done that! It's a perfect touch if you've worked in a place like that.

Really liked the Joe Pope character. And, yes, people who meant so much to your day-to-day office live do move on, do lose touch, do NOT mean as much anymore!
