CyberAlmu | 302 comments I'd like to spend my holidays in the US this year, still don't know exactly when, and I was hoping to get some good advice from you!

I was thinking about going to Great Canyon and Yellowstone, and I'm guessing summer is not a good season to go, right? when would it be a better time to go?
I don't know what cities I could go visit.

My first thought was a trip down Route 66. Problem is that I usually travel alone and that's a trip to do with someone else.

I know the options are endless but, any suggestions about where to go in summer? Preferably somewhere not too hot and a pretty landscape!

thanks in advance :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments CA goin' to the US of A! :D Well, if you don't mind dry heat, which I prefer over humidity, you'd probably really enjoy the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone that time of year.

American schools are closed from May or June until September, so a lot of families take vacations during those months. Which means touristy spots, amusement parks, etc have a chance of being crowded. So, that's something to keep in mind when planning a trip during that time of year.

Good luck with the planning. Let us know where you'll be heading. I'm sure someone around the group lives/d there and can offer up some advise.

Wan (wanwaddell) | 612 comments You can do the entire East Coast cruising along I-95. --- I'd start somewere in Maine (lobsters -- yum) southbound all the way to Miami. Don't forget to stop by DC, tho. :-)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Since I was born in Virginia and have driven that highway more times that I can count, I would just add:

(1) You must be road-rage-free before taking on that drive for enjoyment purposes; it'll be packed in the summer months with families doing the same
(2) That time of year can be super humid in the south-eastern states; make sure your transportation has good A/C

BUT, Fun! Lots to do and see along the coast!

Kristen (k10bentley) | 422 comments I just saw this thread, and I don't know if it is too late, but I'm going to put my 2 cents in:

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on the Leelanau Pennisula in Michigan is one of the most beautiful places on earth! The weather is PERFECT in the summer. You can hike, kayak (river and lake), shop, eat, drive, camp...you name it. It's on the sunset side of Michigan. There are lakes everywhere and lots of little adorable towns. It's also very affordable. Even in the busy times of the summer, the traffic is very low key. It is a very relaxing part of the world; things just move slower in the northern Michigan. It's also pretty close to Mackinac Island; which is pretty unique, too.

We just came back from the Grand Canyon and it is REALLY hot and full of tourists (like us). My brother rafted it a few years ago and he said that is the only way to see the Canyon. It takes a few weeks to raft the whole Canyon. In my opinion, the GC is so big, it's hard to take it all in. It almost looks like a gigantic painting when you see if from the rim.
