I have a bunch of books that were boxed up to go into storage, and one of my cats peed on the box. Most of them are okay, but there are around 15 or 20 that I don't even want to touch (and the smell is awful).

Is there any way to salvage these books? I've looked online, and general consensus seems to be that they can't be saved. But maybe someone has a solution?

Coqueline At the end of the day, they're just papers. I would suggest throwing them away, and buy another copies of those.

Anthony Chavez (thekidstrumpet) | 11 comments Ouch, yeah cat pee is one of the worst smelling things in my opinion, and im slightly allergic to it. I'm sorry that sucks, its like the time one of my upstairs neighbors installed a new washer, but did it wrong and their first load of laundry flooded their laundry room and what was their solution? To sweep it into their garage... all that water went onto their garage staircase and soaked through those floorboards into our garage, through the wall into my bedroom, ruining dozens of books of mine. I was so pissed off. Fortunately it was only water... not cat pee. Hope those weren't hardback copies that got ruined.

Veronika (vforveronika) I HATE THE SMELL OF CAT PEE!!!! my old cat used to do that all over the house!
yeah, i don't think there is a way for you to salvage them, but maybe you could recycle them? maybe you could just put the box out with the recyclables when its time and hope that they take it. WEAR GLOVES & A MASK!!!

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) If the cat only peed on the box, you still might be able to do something......but you will need a whole lot of bicarbonate of soda with which to dust the book pages. If a lot of books that can be replaced are involved, it probably isn't worth it.

Boo.

That's what I thought, but I didn't want to give up on them without seeing if there was something I could do for it.

I did set them out for recycling -- they'll probably trash them if they don't think they can use them. IF someone doesn't take them out of the trash -- I've already had to warn someone not to pick them up. Unless they like that smell, LOL.

toss them in the recycling bin in paper bags? I'm big for recycling.

my old cat did that and I was in a place--emotionally--that I did not care. I'm better now. Unfortunately I had to have the cat euthanized. I lost about 600 books because I had no way to take them when I moved.

ValerieC (keyboardkat) | 10 comments Being really, really honest... if you had the books in a box to go in a storage building or facility, you will likely forget about them, or at least what specific books are in the box. Toss the gross ones (or recycle, depending on where you live). Keep the rest only if you really feel a need to do so...

I have gotten rid of many hundreds of books in the last couple of years. Some I replaced with ebooks, but most I didn't. It is difficult, but I feel less burdened.

I don't think they're going to be able to be saved. The libraries around me have a recycling program where they take old destroyed books, paper, newspapers, etc. and recycle them earning money for the library. That might be the way to go so that some good comes out of it.
Make a list of the books that are destroyed. You might luck out with Yard Sale season starting now and find used copies for a few pennies.
