Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments Are you the kind of person who thrives on change? Or are you like my husband and don't do well with change?

My husband needs a new pillow for his neck. He keeps buying new ones, but always throws them off in favour of the one he's had for many, many, many years. Sigh!

But that is not what this thread is about.

We're going to make some changes around here. We would like to see more activity from our 1000+ members and thought that a revamp of the discussion boards might bring about some new activity.

The monthly book reads will not change. A new feature will be challenges that I will lead once we redecorate.

What would you like to read or discuss in this group in addition to the good foundation we already have. Please give me your suggestions. If you're shy, you can PM me.

Sam | 3 comments I love book challenges! Either by page amount, titles, book lists, themes, anything. I think that's a great idea.

message 3: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I love challenges, too. Themes are good if they're loose enough, because then we have a thread established for anyone looking for that kind of book. For example in another group we have to read sci-fi for May. Easy for me, but one person had never read that genre and still wanted to join. Well, say she reads and loves a particular book, then we'll all see what kind of sci-fi appeals to a non-fan.

Sillier challenges can be fun sometimes, too. For example we can do Cover has to be Predominantly Red or Orange, or Book was Written/Published in the Decade the Reader was Born, or Book has to be about a real Country other than your own. Etc.

Member's choice discussions can be fun, too. All of us who have a book we're enthused about discussing can put our name in a pool, and you can 'draw' each month at random.

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 3 comments I love challenges too. Maybe a few more competitions where Authors can give away their books.

message 5: by Emily (new)

Emily (emylicious) | 2 comments I love challenges! Could definitely make the boards more active :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments From the sounds of it, challenges would be a hit. I'll make a note of the suggestions already made.

What else would you like to have added - perhaps a thread about current events? It doesn't have to be serious. In one of the groups I belong to, we had great fun with the hats worn at the royal wedding (hence my profile picture).

We could have a section to discuss food and travel, or family and pets.

Cheryl, was the member's choice discussion a suggestion for the monthly book read? Instead of a genre, we have a member's choice? Or were you referring to something else?

message 7: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) yes, instead of a genre, we could have member's choice -- maybe alternate months...

For example, each member in this thread has a book they want to share with the group. In, say, June, you 'draw' from a virtual hat Patricia's name. Then you let her know that she's to announce her chosen book immediately and then lead the discussion in July.

Also in June, you create a poll for what genre to read in August. In early July you collect nominations of books that fit that genre, then create a poll listing those books. Then we discuss the group's top vote getter in August.

I'ts a 'leap-frog' thingie.

At least that's my thought. Totally you do what you want. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments I'm going to copy your comment over to the theme recommendation thread. The monthly book read is Becky's baby and she'll be sure to see it there. Thanks for the suggestion.

message 9: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Thanks!

message 10: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I'm loving this group! But I don't ever nominate a book because I'm not that great on leading a discussion. But I'm thrilled with all of the great, new books that I get to add to my to-read shelf. And I want to thank you all for all of your wonderful nominations!

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments Hey, some of these ideas are great. I hope you don't mind me keeping how we choose the monthly reads the same for now. Perhaps in the future we can shake that up a bit.

message 12: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments The monthly reads are your baby. We'll let you orchestrate any changes to them. :)

message 13: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Personally, I love challenges and changes. Keeps me on my toes!

Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments You may have noticed that I've started to rearrange the discussion boards. Welcome and Introductions has its own section. All general book chat is now Chit Chat About Books and moved further down.

Carly Svamvour (faganlady) | 121 comments Well, I know you said this is NOT about pillows, but I too don't like changing pillows.

Every once in a while, Jeff (the huz) freaks out and buys new blankets and sheets - he buys himself a pillow, but I usually hang on to mine.

About two weeks ago he turned our beds inside out (there are rumours of bed bugs in our building - some true, some not).

I did not get to my old pillow fast enough - now I am getting used to a new pillow - actually it's a pretty good pillow.

Please be advised - HE'D BETTER NOT TOUCH DICK! MY STUFFED BEAR!

...............

OK - about the book group changes - yeah - that's fine with me - like I said in another post, I just go with the flow.

message 16: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Carly you're so funny!

message 17: by Anne (new)

Anne Mikusinsi (abghostwriter) It depends on what the change is. I've come to accept change as a part of life, but it's not always good. That said, I try to adapt to it as best I can.

message 18: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) The group changes are going well. I think I'll pass on making any changes in my life for awhile cuz it's so much fun being here on YLTO!
