Barbara Hambly wrote two books that I love: Those Who Hunt the Night and Traveling with the Dead. You get an interesting view of vampires and their interaction with the living.

try discovery of witches. It definitely is a mature read..... beautifully written too. I loved it and I love anne rice. I am not saying there the same, just that its a far cry from the newer vamp stories doing the rounds these days.

I thought I was the only one on earth that had read Fevre Dream!! I just reread it 6 months ago for the umpteenth time. My first time was as a teen. Thank you so much.

I don't think Lord of the Dead by Tom Holland has been mentioned. Diaries of the Family Dracul and The Historian are great books. None of these books will remind you of Anne Rice, but they are for adults and you will remember them.

Pretty amusing that someone recommended Laurell K. Hamilton on a list that specifically said no cheesy books. I think any author who calls her vampires "gorgeous" and "hot" definitely makes the "cheesy" list.

'The Circle' trilogy by Nora Roberts was extremely good and farely unique(recently finished reading them). 'Vampire of the Mists' by Christie Golden (Ravenloft - 1). Saw 'The Light At The End' by John Skipp on someones recomendation here....great book...haven't read that one in years...couple decades at least. I could recomend comedic vampire books, but that's not what you asked for.

The first couple of books in the Anita Blake series were actually good, it wasn't til later on that she turned it into semi-porn ...

I always did too - my first time was probably 30 years ago though I was no longer a teen :) I've read it number of times over the years too and now that I see it mentioned I'm thinking it's time for another go at it ...

I have never come across any books that would compare with Anne Rice's vampires. There have been some mention of The Historian. That is a really, really good book! But also, really different in that there is not a lot of actual vampire characters that converse with one another. I am interested in the Diaries of the family Dracul.That sounds good, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Good luck with your search. If you find something comparable let us know.

I'll have to check out The Light at the End. Loved Skipp's werewolf novel 'Animals '. TLATE has been released in audio. Maybe I'll go that route.

For me the, althought I love the entire vampire series from Rice, Blood and Gold was my all time favouite. It stays with the life and times of Marius, and compunds the necessity of the real vampires of old.

Only Dracula is as good as Anne Rice's books about vampires. No other vampire books IMO are as good, but I haven't read 'The Space Vampires,' so I wouldn't know if that one's good.

Gonna definately read 'Animals'...ty for the info, I love werewolf novels. 2 really good werewolf novels I really enjoyed in the passed are
'The Wolf's Hour' (Robert R. McCammon) and
'Howl-O-Ween' (Gary L Holleman).

I'm going to have to try some of these suggestions, as well.. I tried the Anita Blake series, and didn't care fore it, I struggled along, and about book four realized all the stories were very similar. I'm a sucker for everything "Anita Blake"

I suggest Fiend by Jemiah Jefferson. It's similar to Interview, but there's more smut to it. The smut, however, doesn't take away from the plot. Although I love Anne Rice, people have mentioned before that she tends to ramble a tad bit (and I agree). Fiend however is a really very quick-moving story. It's a prequel to the other books in the series, which I haven't read yet.

The Anita Blake vampires are like Rice's vampires, alluring yet would kill you in a heart beat. Rice's books can be wordy (not filler, but more in a big word type of issue), and are sensual yet not slutty like Blake.

Under the Fang is indeed a good anthology. Every story is completely different, and goes to show how versatile the vampire can be in the right hands.

I Loved Fevre dream. Of course GRRM annoys me with game of thrones but thats another story...

Could anyone help me try to find a title or author for book/short story collection I read 10+ years ago I think?

What I remember is it was a very graphic series of novels/stories about a girl who gets raped and turned into a vampire by some older guy in a rollys royce ? it is very graphic because the vampires in this can completely take over humans and work them like puppets. Also 99.9% of humans bitten die so the girl is left in the gutter.


She doesn't die her eyes get more and more blood red she finds out she has some powers other vamps don't have. She eventually confronts and kills the vampire who makes her in a giant house that has a maze in it?

The only other thing that I vaguely remember was she goes to a dead rock stars grave? Jim morrison? but he isn't dead he is a vampire but insane or maybe a ghoul.

Any help would be appreciated its driving me crazy.

The Vampyre by Tom Holland is kind of similar to the vampire Lestat, because Lord Byron explains how he became a vampire. It's a good book.

I read Fevre Dream for the first time recently and I remember thinking "either GRRM owes Anne Rice royalties or the other way around depending on who wrote theirs first" (Interview With The Vampire came out first). I guess it didn't steal that much from IWTV other than the setting, time period, the "reluctant vampire" character, the slavery element... ok, I guess there were a lot of similarities. Hard for me to make a true head-to-head comparison between the two since I read the IWTV so long ago, but I really loved Fevre Dream. Kind of a combination of IWTV, Heart of Darkness (involves a dark journey up a river) and Moby Dick (the main characters is a guy with a boat who has an Ahab-like obsession).

Why not read the rest of Anne Rice's books about vampires hmm? :) they're as good as Interview with the Vampire and Vampire Lestat. Other vampires like Marius and Pandora are great too!

The Historian, for me, does not compare at all with Rice's work, It is for the most part a fictional documentation (detailed to death) of two people looking for Dracula. We really don't find out much new about Dracula except that he loves book, possibly has a sick sense of humor, and has hidden himself behind the myth of of the legend created by Stoker.

Just not certain I would compare it to the antics of Lestat. I far preferred A Discovery of Witches, and it is the first of a trilogy, so if you enjoy it, you get at least two more decent reads.

Lestat and his mother have a non-sexual but romantic relationship of sorts.

You should try reading the Anita Blake seris. It by Laruell K. Hamilton. There very good. There..."

Those books are boring. Its about Annita Blake, a Mexican-American young woman who is the object of desire of the Ultra Alpha male French Vampire and the All-American Wolf boy. The series start with her wanting to stake the french guy and falling for the wolf because he was the safe option, but as the series move on, Annita Blake ends up in a threesome with those 2 guys while kicking vampiric butt.

Meh, those books are even worse than the true blood stuff.

Try Tom Holland's "The Vampyre" it is dark and sensuous like Rice' s vampire chronicles, it's also set in a similar time period to "Lestat the Vampire." Also, "The Passage" is an adult vampire trilogy but it is set in the future and if you are looking for sensuous vampires these are not the ones populating the pages. It is a good read though, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of vampire fiction but not sold on the young adult stuff out there.

Good to see George R R Martin's Fevre Dream called out here. I think of it every time someone paps on about Game of Thrones. "I know!" I think, "but Fevre bloody Dream!" It's very very good. I don't think Michael Talbot's The Delicate Dependency has been mentioned yet either, another excellent Vampire novel, but the copy I read in 1984 (and still have) is the only one I ever saw.

I truly enjoyed the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. It's not only about vampires though, but it is definitely not cheezy!

This is kind of off the subject,but I've read Vampire fanfiction that has characters from the ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC TV show Queer as Folk(don't judge)set in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania!!!!This does have cussing in it,but so does the show!!!!The story is called The Agony of the Condemned!!!!The fanfiction author is pen named Draccone!!!!They have A GREAT MANY STORIES POSTED ON www.midnightwhispers.com or www.archiveofourown.com!!! Check it out if you like the show and don't mind gay characters in your Vampire reading!!!!The story is long enough to be a novel,41 chapters,in my humble opinion,but a few small typos or grammar mistakes(not enough to take away from the story),so be careful when reading(for all you picky English teachers out there)!!!!Happy reading!!!!
