Melissa (mjkirkland) Oh this is totally cool! My mycologist friends are all probably jumping up and down all over the place.

Not too long ago, fungi were routinely considered some kind of strange plant-related organisms. That morphed into an accepted routine of lumping them into a category of "plants and fungi". Now, it's become plainly clear from molecular studies that fungi and animals share a common ancestor that is different from that of plants. That makes so much more sense to me. Fungi just aren't plants, they are too weird - that's just a biased botanist's opinion of course.
