Not too long ago, fungi were routinely considered some kind of strange plant-related organisms. That morphed into an accepted routine of lumping them into a category of "plants and fungi". Now, it's become plainly clear from molecular studies that fungi and animals share a common ancestor that is different from that of plants. That makes so much more sense to me. Fungi just aren't plants, they are too weird - that's just a biased botanist's opinion of course.
