Carrie | 30 comments Can someone tell me about The Mortal Instruments? I've noticed a few people on here who like. The thing is, I'm not all that into YA. I like my books to be a bit more...adult. Is there a lot of teenage drama in them? Or are they on a more mature level?

Thanks!

message 2: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Woodlief (kimberwood) | 8 comments I don't know about thr Mortal Instruments but the VampireDaries is YA but they are good. No teenage drama.

message 3: by Carrie (new)

Carrie | 30 comments I tried Vampire Diaries. I couldn't stand the girl, so I couldn't get into it. I guess because I teach high school, I don't care to read about it too. :)

message 4: by Becky (new)

Becky (bucktuskl) | 69 comments There's a little drama with them and their parents but for the most part they feel like older characters than they are. The main guy feels older to me so I just pretend :)

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments They are my favorite YA series and I read both YA and adult (I am a grandmother). I have to admit I have read the first three books in the series all four times and have the audios. I've read the fourth once and just got through listening to the audio. My brother (who obviously is an adult) has read the series and loves it and he reads a lot of pretty deep books(non fiction, history etc). Both of my grown sons has read them and liked them (actually one of them is the one who told me about them). The main characters are older teens but there is no school involved or any of that kind of activity. Highly recommend them.

Jeanine (truejourney) | 315 comments Mundie Mom! I knew you would beat me to this thread... lol. Honestly, Carrie, the Mortal Instraments is a must read. I have been trying to get my husband (who limits his reading to MMA magazines) to read it because I think he would love it. The characters are awesome, the writing is fricken great... I can't say enough good about it. I really do not think you will be dissapointed :)

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 280 comments At first I didn't want to read this series but then I wanted to see what everyone was talking about so I read it. Now it is one of my top 10 fav series. I'm trying to get my mom to read them.

message 8: by Ashley (new)

Ashley The Mortal Instruments is a great series to read. The way the characters talk is amazing I just love the vocabulary in these books. This is one of the few series that isn't just limited to YA but can easily leak over and capture older audiences. ^.^

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments There is something very special about Cassandra Clare's writing. Her descriptions make me see everything as it happens almost like I am watching a movie. And JACE..... To give credit where credit it due, Clary is my favorite YA book heroine. I even named a dog after her (I raise Australian Shepherds). My dog is Slash V Clary Fray and the Slash V part is my kennel name. Cool aside, a friend who also is a TMI fan just named her black puppy Slash V Stele The Night and is calling him Rune.

Jeanine (truejourney) | 315 comments Oh! Don't waste your time on the Vampire Diaries. I actually liked the first two, but after that, the series went to hell. I hate saying bad things about books, mainly because I know how much time and heart goes into writing, but it is the truth none the less :)

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Glad we are now friends, Jeanine (funny I sent you a request and then saw you had sent me one). I agree on the Vampire Diaries books. I liked the first ones that she wrote back in the nineties (altho I too could not stand Elena) but then the more recent ones were just weird. I did really like her book (LJ Smith) The Forbidden Game.

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 280 comments I liked Vampire Diaries and I hate the TV show

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Wow, I didn't think anyone hated the TV show. It is far different than the books and only uses them as a base for the concept, but they are the only show on TV that I currently watch. Or did since tonight was the series finale.

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 280 comments I really don't know why I hate the show, there is just something about it I don't like.I feel bad for people who haven't read the series but want to now cause of the show.Cause they are so different.

message 15: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I loveeeee the Mortal Insturments series and I'm 22 years old. Honestly, they are young, like 16 years old or so. But the characters seem so much more mature.

There also is no High School type of scenes in them, which is also why most of the time i have them imagined as adults, not teenagers.

At least give City of Bones a try and see what you think. I love me some Shadowhunters :)

Oh! Also, that same author put out the Infernal Devices, which is similar to Mortal Instruments. :)

message 16: by Carrie (new)

Carrie | 30 comments Wow! Thanks, everyone! I'm putting it on my To-Read list. I just have to finish the three I"m reading now! lol!

Haha... Me, too. I was wondering what was going on. I sent you a request and then seconds later, I approved your request. Great Mundie Mom's think alike I guess :)
Vampire Diaries is one of the only shows I enjoy watching right now as well. Although, the last seven episodes are currently collecting dust on my DVR, I do plan to watch them soon. I am a Trueblood and Son's of Anarchy fanatic, too :)

message 18: by Carrie (new)

Carrie | 30 comments I love True Blood, but I don't have HBO... or time to watch tv :( I saw the first season when it came out on DVD and part of the second season.

You should definitely rent the seasons... They are pretty awesome and last season, they finally introduced a character that is, off-the-charts, HOT! lol

Carrie, I LOVE MI. IMO, it has the perfect combination of Twilight and Harry Potter. The aching love story from Twilight and the magic, fast-pace and mystery from Harry Potter. You won't regret it. I'm looking forward to my senile so I can re-read MI over and over again, lol. Seriously, it's that great of a read. My favorite YA series, hands down.

message 24: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 3071 comments BTW, I read MI right after Black Dagger Brotherhood, AND it held my interest. I didn't think after reading BDB, I couldn't go back YA. I was wrong. I ended up reading MI twice and then audiobook right afterward, couldn't get enough of JACE, sighs....

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Crazy (may I call you that? LOL) I totally agree with your statement, "My favorite YA series, hands down." Nothing touches it! One of the reasons it is such a great re-read is that every time I read it or listen to the audio I pick up on something I swear I missed the first time. Little hints and innuendos that without knowing what is coming you just didn't realize were glimpses into the story. Incredible writing and storytelling.

message 26: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 3071 comments Hi Terry, Crazy is my middle name, lol. I don't do anything half-way. Speaking of audiobook, I didn't like the way they did CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS. I felt Jace's voice didn't carry that witty, arrogant kick we all grown to love.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Oh, I totally agree with you. I thought the gal who did COB was good and then the one who did the next two was even better. When the girl read Jace's parts in CoFA in her little girl sweet voice it just was terrible. Often when Clary and Jace were talking together she used exactly the same voice and inflection for them both. I liked Ed Westwick's rendition of Simon's voice. I just finished listening to it two days ago.

message 28: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 3071 comments Terry, as much as I love CoFA, I stopped the audiobook after 2 cd's. It was that bad for me. have a nice weekend.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments I have kind of been looking for somewhere this is being discussed (the CoFA audiobook) so perhaps whoever is responsible for doing them would get the message. Maybe I should just say something about it on the facebook group as I don't think anything has been said.

message 30: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 3071 comments The power of one, huh Terry. I'll second that opinion. Keep me posted. Thanks.

message 31: by Heather (new)

Heather (hp_cp) | 8 comments I just wanna say that i LOVE ther series. In my mind Jace is sooo HOT! And I think Jace and Clary are perfect for each other. I also love her other series as well.
As for vampire diaries, Damon is hot stuff.
And I am a fan of true blood. I just have to wait for each season to come out on dvd. Don't have hbo.
I am a true sucker for paranormal romance!!!!

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments I detested Elena in the first book too. And I did think it was kind of unrealistic how quickly she changed. But once she did she became a heroine I did like a lot.

message 33: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 3071 comments Enjoy Denise, you won't regret it. I was really surprise how enthralled I was and just couldn't get enough. Keep me posted.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 407 comments I think that The Mortal Instruments is probably the best YA series out there. Really good writing and great characters. Vampire Academy series is also good. Richelle Mead's adult series are great too. Other YA don't really hold my interest.( Whoops, except Twilight.)

message 35: by Katie (new)

Katie | 157 comments I have only just finished reading the MI books and loved them! One of those worlds that just pull you in

message 36: by Kimi (new)

Kimi (kimisokool) | 60 comments Love it! Not my favorite ever but probably my second favorite! =)

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments So far nothing has even come close to it for me as far as being a favorite series - in the YA category. (I just can't compare TMI to Outlander so don't try)

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments It never ceases to amaze me how so many of us love the same books and yet can totally be turned off by one that someone else you usually agree with loves. I couldn't stand the Vampire Academy book (the first one since I wasn't about to read any more of them). But then I have a friend who does not like TMI so of course I think she is unbalanced or something. LOL

message 39: by Beth (new)

Beth | 18 comments The Vampire Diaries is a terrible book series in my opinion...watching the show on the CW network is definitely worth it...and to be honest, The Mortal Instruments is full of nothing but teenage angst and drama. The two main characters are still creating friction amongst themselves four books into the series. City of Fallen Angels wasn't worth the read...I would suggest reading Clockwork Angel written by Cassandra Clare instead. Way better than Mortal Instruments hands down!

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Of course I have to disagree totally on The Mortal Instruments. And both of my adult sons loved it as well as my brother who had never read a YA novel before but reads constantly. It is my favorite YA book series and my granddaughters' (17 & 18) as well - but have I said that before, haven't I? LOL

I really liked Clockwork Angel but not nearly as much as TMI. I love her writing.

Just another good example of how one person's favorite is not another person's kind of book at all. In a way I think that with some books one person "gets it" and another one just doesn't.

really i was about to down load it what dint you like?

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments If The Mortal Instruments is good for a girl of 13 or so I guess I am either in my second childhood or just young at heart. I have a 13 year old granddaughter but my 17 and 18 year old granddaughters love the series too as well as my sons, my brother and myself. I kind of have found that it crossed all ages and both sexes as far as loving the series. Obviously not everyone is going to like it because there isn't a book or series out there that EVERYONE likes. And a series that isn't finished is always going to leave us hanging until it is over. Two more books to go.

Beth | 18 comments Cocopretty wrote: "Beth wrote: "The Vampire Diaries is a terrible book series in my opinion...watching the show on the CW network is definitely worth it...and to be honest, The Mortal Instruments is full of nothing b..."

I think for me The Vampire Diaries just didn't live up to my expectations. However, I also had seen the TV show before reading the books so I already kind of had the characters in my mind that went against those in the book. But most of all, and I rarely say this...the show is way better than the books. L.J Smith's style of writing just isn't my cup of tea, and all the blood-sucking between Stefan and Elena plus the violence just came off trashy.

message 46: by Beth (new)

Beth | 18 comments Cocopretty wrote: "i like mortal instruments is good for a girl 13 or so dont get me wrong i love romace books but it kinda left me hanging"

I completely agree. I don't feel like I wasted any time reading the series, but I kinda figured that by the time 'City of Fallen Angels' came out, Jace and Clary would be past all of their insecurities and forging a real relationship...but it CFA just kind of felt like a bad repeat of the first three books.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments My favorite YA series ever. Her writing just paints a picture like you are there. The audio books are really good too although I don't like the reading in the last one as well. These are great re-reads. I swear I find something I missed the first...and second...etc time every time I read or listen to them. There are a lot of hints that I missed and then missed again.

message 48: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 3071 comments MI is the favorite YA, hands down!

Denise, glad you've enjoyed the series.

Terry, definitely a good one for re-read. I've read them and then audiobook the first 3 books. I didn't care for the way the audiobook was done for the 4th book but I enjoyed the book immensely. Can't wait for the next one.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments I've read it and it is good. I personally don't like it as well as TMI but it is way up there above a lot of the other YA books I have read. I love her writing. Magnus is in it - he is immortal after all!

message 50: by Mairead (new)

Mairead | 164 comments I love TID. I think it might actually be funnier and more tense than TMI, but I did miss my Simon.
