I was thinking about some of my favorite stand up and cheer moments in my favorite books.

I jumped off of the couch when Dresden and Butters came riding in on the zombie dinosaur! Could there be a better moment in literature?! I mean, seriously, an undersized undertaker keeping the beat as a one man polka band to allow the down on his luck wizard ride a necromancer T-Rex into battle and kick some zombie a$$! Loved it!

My second favorite stand up and cheer moment came in Ysabel. It's a loose sequel to the The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. When Dave leaps over the wall to save the day, I screamed in delight! I loved the characters from Fionavar so much, to see such a beloved character literally leap in like Indiana Jones, well, it made my day!Ysabel

I do quite enjoy when Hermione slaps Malfoy in the face. :D

Oh my yes. And I love that we get to see it twice (in the movie at least).

I need to go sit with my books and find a good one. Like I need an excuse to go sit with my books.

And Sidonie and Imriel's (view spoiler)[reunion in Carthage in Kushiel's Mercy, when her memory's been tampered with and she doesn't remember who he is... but he mentions the tattoo on her neck and she says, without even flinching, "Cut it out of me." There are so many BAMFs in that series, I looove it. :') (And that reminded me of Ysandre reclaiming her throne in Kushiel's Chosen... gosh, I love those books.) (hide spoiler)]

Yes!! I love that part.

There are several for me, Lackey does those kinds of moments particularly well, I think.

But my all-time favorite "stand up and cheer" is actually in a sci-fi book (sorry ... please don't excommunicate me from the group for this!) ... Barrayar, the second of the Vorkosigan series by Bujold and the second of two books about the woman who is the mother of Miles. Towards the end of a very dirty civil war, she returns from an 'unauthorized' foray to the rebel city to the meeting where both sides are negotiating for a cease fire, with her husband in charge.

Carrying a large shopping bag from one of the big shops, she announces she has been shopping in the city for a present for her husband ... and dumps the head of the rebel faction on the conference table ... and announces "I am tired of your war. End it, now!"

I loved it in Summer Knight when Harry charges forward and his battle cry is "I don't believe in Fairies!"

The moment in Gauntlgrym when I realized (view spoiler)[ Artemis Entereri was back (hide spoiler)] I had been disappointed in the last few Forgotten Realms books but I'm definately looking forward to the next one.

I think I have about 5 scenes from A Storm of Swords alone (view spoiler)[ When Joffrey is poisoned during his wedding, when Tyrion kills his father, when Littlefinger pushes Lysa out of the Moon door, When Catelyn rises from the dead... but my absolute favorite is when Daenarys frees the Unsullied and sets her dragons on those slavers all the while yelling "Freedom" and "Dracarys, Dracarys". That entire chapter rocked! (hide spoiler)]

David Weber is the master of the stand up and cheer moments in his books. In Field of Dishonor when Honor Harrington challenges (view spoiler)[the guy who killed her boyfriend to a duel. He thinks he'll take her because he's killed tons of people in duels and she's an amateur. But then when they meet up, she drills him with 4 shots before he can even get off even one of his own.

"Honor Harrington watched over the sights of her pistol. She saw the hate on his face, the terrible realization of what happened, the venomous determination as his pistol wavered up centimeter by agonized centimeter. It was coming up, rising toward firing position while he snarled at her, and there was no emotion at all in her brown as eyes her fifth bullet smashed squarely through the bridge of his nose."

Where was that, I kind of missed that part in the book, I was wondering where he was, I thought he was died by know since he is a human.

@ Kevin (view spoiler)[Artemis used his Netherese Blade on a shade in the short story That Curious Sword and became part shade because of it's life sucking abilities. You can read the story in Realms of Shadow. As for Gauntlgrym he goes by the name Barrabus. It's not "told" but there are many clues. Including when he sees Drizzt he's very shocked, remember he still thinks he killed him. (hide spoiler)]

I did not know that, I should go back and reread the short story, its in the collected stories.

That one and several others in his Honor Harrington books. I'm with you ... love Honor and Cordelia both ...

Another author that does strong female characters is Robin McKinley ... several stand up and cheer scenes in several of her books. Probably my favorite is in "The Hero and the Crown" when Aerin charges through the final battle with the Hero's Crown, to defeat the invaders.
