I've never read Harry Potter.

Seen the flicks though. Figure that's enough for me :P

message 52: by Sheron (new)

Sheron McCartha (sherimc) Maggie: Yeah, I think you should throw in a Dresden File. No one beats themselves up more than Harry...but I think that he secretly enjoys all the commotion

message 53: by Kristen (new)

Kristen I'm reading Oryx and Crake and it's great so far!

message 54: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I'm ostensibly reading The Trial and Magician: Apprentice. In reality though, my boyfriend gave me Minecraft, so I am spending lots of time rearranging blocks. I am building a gigantic library though!

message 55: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 44 comments Gravity Wave by Phoenix MacKenzie. Unique. I like his style of writing.

message 56: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) Just starting Replica - a new author for me but it was very cheap on Kindle and sounded fun so I thought I'd give it a go :)

message 58: by Laura (new)

Laura (booksbytheflame) I'm not much of a Sci-Fi reader myself, but it's a genre I am willing to pick up, hence joining this group.

Any suggestions?

message 59: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Laura, Robert Charles Wilson wasn't my first sci fi read, but he was what made me fall in love with the genre. I highly recommend his book Spin.

Jack McDevitt is also really good.

message 60: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I started reading The Gates.

Laura-I'd recommend joining in one of our reads....We are finishing up Dune right now, which most of us LOVE...next month it is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Oryx and Crake. It will be a good reading month!

message 62: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments I'm not a big fan of Margaret Atwood, and Douglas Adams for me has gone way too mainstream for my liking anymore.

message 63: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I've got my cope of Oryx and Crake. Now I just have to get through a bunch of other books first...

I was worried I wouldn't be able to read both of them...but I seem to be catching up with 'stuff'...lol

whimsicalmeerkat Kevin wrote: "I'm not a big fan of Margaret Atwood, and Douglas Adams for me has gone way too mainstream for my liking anymore."

Soo...because more people like an author's books you like them less?

message 66: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) The scifi book I'm reading right now (although honestly it does have some fantasy in it too) is Time's Edge. I really like it! I'm also reading The Mists of Avalon which I can't read fast enough. In addition I carry Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life around it my purse, but I haven't read much yet.

No, that is not the case for Atwood.

message 68: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments I love Atwood's work. I've enjoyed everything I've read from her, except for Cat's Eye. I loathed Cat's Eye for some reason.

I might just do that :) The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy might be a good place to start. Thank you :) xx

*rolls eyes* Oh the lengths to which you will go...

message 71: by Sheron (new)

Sheron McCartha (sherimc) I just finished Connie Willis' Blackout and All Clear. Both books are amazing and since I especially like time travel (Caught In Time is my novel) I thought they were great. They really pulled you into the time period and the characters. I look for that in a good book. The other book that I just finished is Windup Girl which is a little more dense with science and took me a bit to get into, but then it was very interesting and hard to put down. The whole genetic thing is going to be my next blog. Not a fan of Douglas and read Atwood already. She gets a bit down.

Finished The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and finishing up Consider Phlebas, both of which i really enjoyed. Now on to Oryx and Crake, Shades of Greyand Royal Assassin, which has been sitting here patiently!

You really should read his Robot Novel, Caves of Steel and Naked Sun, then read Robot of Dream which will blow your mind.

message 76: by Mach (new)

Mach | 19 comments I will keep that in mind, Kevin.

message 77: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I finished The Gates this morning.

Then I started Bag of Bones.

message 78: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments How was The Gates, Scott?

message 79: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments Jason wrote: "How was The Gates, Scott?"

I enjoyed it but I thought The Book of Lost Things was better.

He has a sequel to The Gates coming out in October. I'm sure that I'll read that also.

message 80: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 422 comments Thanks, Scott!

message 81: by Neal Jones (new)

Neal Jones I am reading George R R Martin's "A Feast For Crows". I absolutely LOVE this author and his "Song Of Ice And Fire" series. I know that it's technically fantasy, but he's a great sci-fi author as well, and his stories are very hard to put down. :-) I'm reading the first four books in this series a second time because I want to be ready when the 5th book, "A Dance With Dragons" comes out July 12! So excited!!!!

message 82: by Chris (new)

Chris Reading Spinward Fringe Broadcast 0 Origins by Randolph Lalonde

message 83: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) @Christina ah so I guess you have a kindle then. Would live to hear what you think when you finished. I had a couple of things I didn't like in the writing style and wondering if others find the same issues.

message 84: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments I started The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Very entertaining. I was hitting a brick wall with nonfiction. Hitchhiker was what I needed.

message 85: by Mach (new)

Mach | 19 comments Glad you like it Aloha, it is a funny book.

message 86: by Aloha (new)

Yes, I have a nookcolor. I've only read the first chapter but so far I like it.

message 88: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I started The Snow Queen for some group on here (they blur...) and my re-read of A Clash of Kings.

message 89: by Kevin (new)

Kevin I'm currently reading the Cassandra Kreshnov series by Joel Shepherd. Just about to start in the 3rd and final book Killswitch.
They're really good imo.

message 90: by Brick (new)

Brick Marlin Reading Deeper. Great series so far!

Laura (booksbytheflame) Brick wrote: "Reading Deeper. Great series so far!"

I've only read Tunnels, but I thought it was great - such an original story :)

message 92: by Brick (new)

Brick Marlin Definitely!

message 93: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments Finished The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. That was a lot of fun. Now I'm in the middle of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward for Horror Aficionados July read. I am liking it so far. When I'm done with that, it'll be Oryx and Crake next. For paper book, I'm reading Atom: Journey Across the Subatomic Cosmos, which will probably go at a crawl since I can't stay still and I hate to read paper because of my bad eyesight. I sit too long at the computer as it is. During my leisure time, I like to move around. That's why I'm a fan of audios and eBooks.

message 94: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) Reading Perdido Street Station for a group read, also wading through third Malazan book, Memories of Ice and have Quarter Share on my phone for those moments where the other two get to heavy.

message 95: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
Lee, Memories of Ice is my favorite malazan!

message 96: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I finished Bag of Bones this morning. I thought it was an excellent ghost story.

I'm going to start The Case of Charles Dexter Ward this afternoon. This will be my first read of any Lovecraft.

Lee (kiwifirst) This will be my first read of any Lovecraft.

Your life is about to change.

message 98: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 538 comments I finished The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. I enjoyed it more than The Call of Cthulhu. Also, instead of reading a typo infested eBook, I listened to it in audio. The narrator was excellent. Now, I'm looking forward to his other stories. But after I get through the forum reads that I want to do this month.

Just started Oryx and Crake for SciFi Aficionados. I am loving it! It's an audio that's narrated by one of my favorite narrator, Campbell Scott.

message 99: by Scott (new)

Scott I have started A Talent For War.

I love The Foundation Series! I've read Prelude, Foundation, Foundation & Empire, and Second Foundation. I can't wait to continue the series, but there are so many good Group Reads!
