Regalado | 4 comments So I just started The Player of Games which is 2nd in the series. I'm wondering if this is ok. Am I going to miss anything if I have not read Consider Phlebas?

The Culture books don't have to be read in order. I started with Consider Phlebas and quite like it. However, it seems that quite a few readers don't care for it and think The Player of Games is the best place to start. YMMV.

Wow, looking at your profile, that's quite a lot of reading and from Japan, Are you able to easily buy books in English?

Getting English language books was a bit of a problem years ago. However, now we have this Amazon company (you may have heard of it) which provides them in all formats.
😉

Regalado | 4 comments Sounds interesting. There's no summary on it. Is it a collection of short stories? What's it about?

Clyde (wishamc) Space: 1969 by Bill Oakley (and others)
An Audible Originals alternate history space comedy -- Just started and so far it isn't really working for me. But, the voice actors are great, so I will stick with it a bit more.

It's a collection of folk tales. You can find it on Wikisource because it's public domain.

I had lots of fun with that one, even if it is on the silly side.

John Devalle | 7 comments Frankenstein.
Published in 1818, probably the first sci0fi novel, and without doubt one of the best ever!
What makes Frankenstein unique is that it’s prophetic. Mary Shelley, at the age of 18, came up with a tale illustrating that the danger of knowledge is not confined to evil people applying that knowledge to evil purposes but also those of good intent inadvertently bringing about a calamity. So it was with Victor Frankenstein, the subject of Mary’s tale, accidently creating a nightmare for himself and his loved ones. The novel is more horrific than any film of Frankenstein, a truly grim tale, yet it’s a masterpiece of literature, written by a teenager.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 404 comments If memory serves Frankenstein was originally p uploaded with the suggestion that a male had written it, possibly John Polidori a friend of the family, as it was thought one would believe a woman as young as her would conceive of such a story.
