Dimity | 87 comments I have just finished a spat of reading books with heavy material (slavery, war atrocities, Holocaust) and I'm been feeling a little anxious and edgy lately, which I think is in part due to my reading choices. I need some palate cleansers! Please share your favorite light, fun reads with happy endings with me. Whimsy is appreciated.

To start, I really enjoyed Gods Behaving Badly a couple years ago and I requested Major Pettigrew's Last Stand from the library because that looked hopeful.

Adrienne (adriennemarietheresa) | 175 comments Oooh I liked Gods Behaving Badly as well. Not sure I can help though. My palate cleanser is fantasy, of which I'm neck deep in right now. ;)

Adrienne, I looked on 4 sites for recommendations that were similar to Gods Behaving Badly but all that came up was ancient Greek mythology books which def. wasn't what I am looking for :). I'm open to fantasy as long as it's soft and gentle-I can't take anymore violence, imagined or otherwise.

That's a real fun read.

Vanessa Vianna | 3 comments I Loved Twenties Girl!!!

Another book from Sophie Kinsella, as good as Twenties Girl is Can you keep a secret?.

My suggestion is Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern.

Jacki Mohap (shereadinthesheshed) | 27 comments Emily Giffin's books are really good... Something Borrowed (Darcy & Rachel, #1) by Emily Giffin Something Blue (Darcy & Rachel, #2) by Emily Giffin Baby Proof by Emily Giffin Love the One You're With by Emily Giffin Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin

Another good read is The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe...not TOO fluffy but not too heavy either. It's just the right mix, and it's from the 1950s!

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments For fun books I recommend books by Mary Kay Andrews! Savannah Blues is my favorite I think but I also enjoyed Hissy Fit which is about a bride that catches her Maid of Honor with her fiance right before the wedding and (needless to say) throws a big HISSY FIT!! Her books are light and fun!!

I really enjoyed Major Pettigrew's Last Stand Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson . It's an easy read, but not fluffy. The author does include attitudes toward immigrants but prods them gently.

message 15: by Tara (new)

Tara Woolpy | 17 comments Jennifer Cruisie is always a good beach read. I'm also addicted to Josh Lanyon who writes gay mysteries.

message 16: by Louise (new)

Louise You probably know Marian Keyes, other light books I've enjoyed are A Thing (or Two) About Curtis and Camilla, and The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, #1) by Alexander McCall Smith series

message 17: by Regine (new)

Regine I loved Gods Behaving Badly.Another fluffy read that I enjoyed was The Birth House. I also quite enjoy graphic novels as palate cleansers

message 18: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments I agree Tara, Jennifer Cruisie is a good read!

message 19: by Becomingme (new)

Becomingme | 51 comments Hmmm...I'll add pretty much any of Sarah Addison Allen, though there are some dark aspects, the books I've read end up in a happy place...oh, and if you have an ebook, A Modern Witch was entirely fluffy bunny type stuff (no sadness, no real conflict, just pure sugar)...I'll also suggest some Jon Stewart or other obviously humour type things...oh, and I kinda like the pluky/cheeky Flavia de Luc stories (although they are murder mysteries), she does have a sense of humour (although written by a gentleman, Flavia is an 11 year old prodigy Sherlock Holmes type chemist Ramona Quimibyish busybody)by Alan Bradley.

I know it's good to get away for awhile...heck even the Charline Harris Sookie books are a palate cleanser after some harder reads...

message 20: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (wolfewoman) | 24 comments I had that same problem last summer - I looked through my tbr piles & couldn't find anything light. I wound up reading a Jimmy Buffett book. I've also found a nice cozy mystery works, especially when there are cats! I like the Cats in Trouble series. Also, a nice romance. You know it will have a good ending! I like Lauren Willig's pink carnation series and Julia Quinn's books.

message 21: by Megan (new)

Megan M | 267 comments I agree with Sarah Addison Allen.

message 22: by Christine (new)

Christine | 1311 comments I really like the Sookie Stackhouse series too :)

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 101 comments I recently read and reviewed a book by Jeffrey Stepakoff entitled The Orchard: A Novel. It's set to be released 5 July 2011. It's a light-hearted romance novel.

The author has released a free short story teaser called Love a la Carte which you can get here .

message 24: by Jane (new)

Jane (shoxford) | 39 comments Just anything by PG Wodehouse, always cheers me up

message 25: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 208 comments I love all of these suggestions! I really enjoy the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and A Good Man in Africa: A Novel. Both are set in Africa and are very funny and interesting. And for a completely different type of book, I'd recommend Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging (But this is a YA book...so if you don't care for YA, you may not like it.)

message 26: by Priya (new)

Priya (priyavasudevan) | 110 comments Georgette Heyer works every time for me. I also like the Ladies' detective Agency books or Agatha Christie. I've just got myself a bagful of comfort reads.
