Tej | 120 comments I finally got my hands on an actual copy of the 2006 edition of the book and decided to compile some statistics. I don't intend these numbers to have any actual meaning because numbers can be interpreted all sorts of ways that may or may not be accurate. But, I thought it was interesting and decided to share with the group.

Tej | 120 comments Added/dropped:
283 books were dropped from the 2006 edition.
11 books were dropped from the 2008 edition.

Of the 11 that were dropped, six of them had just been added for that edition. You might think that they didn't really belong on the list in the first place. However, one of them was The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, which is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I was really disappointed to see that it was dropped right away.

Tej | 120 comments Author with most books (2006 edition):
There's a tie between Charles Dickens and J. M. Coetzee for most books on the list, each with ten.

Dickens is one of my favorite writers, plus he was prolific, plus he was consistently good. Admittedly, I could easily die without having read Martin Chuzzlewit, but I do think he deserves to have such a high number on the list. On the other hand, I've only read Dusklands by Coetzee and thought it was just okay. Is there a big fan of his out there who thinks he should have had that high of a number? If so, what's your favorite and what did you like about it?

Tej | 120 comments Country with the most authors (2006 edition):
England comes in at number one with 127 authors. This doesn't actually mean nationality; the book lists the country where they were born. So, the list actually understates the number of British authors as some were born somewhere in the British Empire, but would have considered themselves English.

Also, I was really disappointed by the discrepancies in the book due to changes in political geography. For example, Doris Lessing was listed as being born in Persia in in one of her books, but Iran in the other three. In my list, I decided to list her as Persia because Iran didn't really exist when she was born in 1919. Robert Musil is listed once for Austria, and once for Austria-Hungary. For the Czechs, sometimes they're listed as Czechoslovakia, sometimes as the Czech Republic. I go with the former because they were all born between 1874 and 1962.
