14. Read a book with a topless girl on cover. (yip you read right)

message 52: by Lauren (last edited Jun 08, 2011 01:32AM) (new)

Lauren Smith 15. Start a new series. Ie. read the first book of a series you haven't read before.

16. Read a book where a virus is an important part of the plot. It can be a computer virus, or a disease. Real or fictional.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
17. Read a book that has a word in the title that can have two meanings eg. tail and tale (the word can be spelt the same of differently)

17. Read a book that has something to do with your zodiac sign (either something in the story or on the cover or in the title or author's name).

18. Read a book set in at least two different times. (either through flashbacks or time travel or two story lines mixing. Both times have to be significantly present so no 2 pages of the book set in a different time if the book has 500 pages)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Ooh, nice one Barbara. I was going to nominate something with time travel.

20. Read a book set in an alternate world.

NOOOOOO! Why, Kahlan, why?!!! That damn biography is still vexing me in the Patchwork challenge!

On the other hand if I can read the same bio for both challenges (they will overlap for 22 days) then I forgive you.

message 59: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I have to say I quite like no. 18 - two different times - as well.

Lauren I don't know if you are a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan (I don't suppose you have to be to read the book) but I read Scar Tissue for the patchwork challenge and although Im not a huge autobiography fan this book was actually quite good. (check out my reveiw if possible)

My bad, Sorry! I was typing and thinking at the same time and I think I took longer then I thought. I had the zodiac task but wasn't too sure about the second one and made that up while typing. Lauren beat me to numbers 17 and 18.

From Niecole via sms (she won't be near the internet in awhile):

23. Read a book written by a man

24. Read a book that is colourful (min 3-4 different colours)

message 69: by Shannon SA (new)

Shannon SA (shannonsa) 25. Read the longest book in number of pages that has been on your TBR the longest time as at the start of this challenge on 20 June 2011. (Can be read at any time during the challenge.)

26. Read a book with the name of a City or Country in the title. (Example: London, Russia)

message 70: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith How do we work out a book for number 25? If I have a 1000 page book that's been on my list since the beginning of this month and a 200 page book that's been on my list since I joined the site, which should I read? Also, I have a tbr pile about 500 books long - is there a simple way to search for this?

For 26: do fictional cities and countries also count?

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Lauren Im not sure about the quantity vs length on to-read list issue. But if you go to your to-read list and go to sort there is an option to sort your books according to number of pages. It makes it really easy.

message 72: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, that's easy enough, and you can also sort by date added, but it's the bit about co-ordinating the two that confuses me.

Another question I have about that task - are we talking about the books you actually have (real or digital) or are books that you still need to acquire also included?

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Yeah I agree it is confusing!

message 74: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm also a bit nervous about it - I have several 1000+ page non-fiction tomes that I really don't want to have to read for this.

message 75: by Claudia (last edited Jun 10, 2011 05:00AM) (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I approached it like this: number of pages first, then look at the date added. Anything on your to-read list qualifies, I guess.
So starting at the bottom of my to-read list, and looking at the earliest date added it's The Passage. Which happens to have been added on the date I joined.

**Edit, on second thought I'm kind of confused by it too. Should size or date take precedence?

message 76: by Liezel (last edited Jun 10, 2011 07:10AM) (new)

Liezel (liezkl) | 736 comments 27. Read a book with a title that can be split into 2 words (eg., starcrossed star+crossed)

28. I see dead people. Read a book about ghosts, hauntings, etc.

Lauren wrote: "I'm also a bit nervous about it - I have several 1000+ page non-fiction tomes that I really don't want to have to read for this."

Bare with me here, I’m "loop holing" the challenge. The challenge say -Read the longest book in number of pages that has been on your TBR the longest time as at the start of this challenge on 20 June 2011. So here is what you do, take all the really long books that you just aren't up to reading right now off you to-read list. (You have until the 20th to do this) Then choose the book for your challenge from the remaining. Then on the 21st add the books you removed back on to the list. Lawyered!

message 78: by Lauren (last edited Jun 10, 2011 08:13AM) (new)

Lauren Smith Ok, I tried this - I sorted my to-read list according to date added (earliest to latest) and then looked at the first 30 books and picked the one with the most pages, which, to my relief is The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer by Neal Stephenson, a book I was actually planning to read for the sci fi challenge. It's 512 pages long.

However, since I added a lot of books on the day I joined, if I go through all of those I end up with Anathem, also by Neal Stephenson, at 918 pages.

The thing is, I've had Diamond Age for years, but I only bought a copy of Anathem last year even though I added it to my tbr list in 2009.

Lol, I'd rather bear with you thanks, but I did actually think of doing that :) On the other hand if I can use one of the two methods I mentioned above I might not have to.

Do you need only one nomination?

Read a non-fiction popular science novel. This can be on any topic you find interesting.

Whooohoo thanks :)

We need 2 :) So 1 more.

We have slightly different rules with this one and that is a little too specific. Can we maybe just make it non-fiction?

Guess that would work, but how about - Explore a topic you find interesting by reading a non-fiction novel on the topic.

As for the final nomination:

Read the book that has been on your to-read list for the longest time. If you have a physical pile of TBR books read the one at the bottom of the stack.
