This is the place to ask for help :)

Here are some suggestions! Feel free to ask if you need help thinking of another book :)

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

7. Shocking titles

A shocking title can be something:
- horrifying
- offensive
- subverts the norm in a way that is shocking rather than just funny or weird.
- taboos. Titles with swearwords (proper swearwords, not damn or bugger), strong sexual innuendo, genitalia.
- gross

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (I'd say the sheer arrogance of this qualifies it)
I Still Miss My Man But My Aim Is Getting Better
If You Can't Live Without Me, Why Aren't You Dead Yet?!
When You Are Engulfed in Flames
When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?. Not the kind of book you'd normally read cover to cover, but pretty damn funny if you have a dark and twisted sense of humour.
The Satanic Verses. Actually, I'm not too sure if people would consider this shocking...
God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything
Capitalist Nigger: The Spider-Web Doctrine
Rape: A Love Story
Life, Sex and Ideas: The Good Life without God
Scared Stiff: Tales of Sex and Death
Crazy Cock
The Doll Who Ate His Mother
Do Me: Sex Tales from Tin House
The Haunted Vagina
Zombies and Shit
The Baby Jesus Butt Plug: A Fairy Tale
The Cannibals of Candyland

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I actually have How to Shit in the Woods: An Environmentally Sound Approach to a Lost Art, but sadly it's too short.
Will Pride and Prejudice and Zombies work? I saw it on the GR list, but maybe it's more humorous than shocking.

message 5: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, I agree that it's not really shocking.

Would you guys say this is considered a weapon?

Witch and Wizard by James Patterson

message 7: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Very good question! I have no idea. On the one hand I would say no because it is magic but on the other hand I would say yes also because it is magic and it can kill. I would say that whoever thought of that task should redefine weapon.

message 8: by Naz (last edited Jun 03, 2011 03:19PM) (new)

Naz (nazz) Tricky. I don't see a wand, do you know if there's one in the book? If there is one than I say it can be defined as a weapon, if not then I'm not sure. Although you could argue that their posture and looks to kill would mean that they in a position where they about to fight and the obvious weapon for a witch and wizard would be magic. Which they clearly doing.

message 9: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
She has a fireball in her hand which is obviously conjured up by magic. So no wand.

message 10: by Lauren (last edited Jun 04, 2011 12:55AM) (new)

Lauren Smith Initially I thought yes, a fireball's a weapon, but it just occurred to me that Lauren F specified that the person must be holding the weapon - it can't be in a holster, on the back etc. The fireball is floating in the air above her hand; she's not holding it.

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
I;ll ask her today just to be safe anyway

message 12: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
In the nominations thread she said that it should be something held in a hand not on a back.

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Sorry, meant to add an apostrophe and a 't' to my "can".
Have corrected it now.

message 14: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
That's ok, I couldn't see if it was floating above her hand or not. If it is floating than she is not holding it. So then it would be out.

message 15: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Well, it's not solid so I assume she can't hold it. And unless she's resistant to fire she can't touch it either.

message 16: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Well i dont' think its floating? its more forming cause she is making/made it

message 17: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yes, but she's not gripping it the way you would grip a sword. On the other hand, I guess she is holding it in place with a magical force until she's ready to throw it...

message 18: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
lol who knows

message 19: by Naz (new)

Naz (nazz) Lol sorry Lu.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Hi Sorry Lu a magic fire ball is not a weapon. 1st as mentioned above it can't be held. 2nd a weapon must in its nature be deadly, for all we know the fire ball on that book cover could change people into frogs, which is horrible not life threatening. And thirdly wouldn't a fire ball be the magical equivalent of a bullet and not a gun which is ammunition not a weapon, if you get my meaning.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
With regards to the shocking title what about Rode Hard, Put Up Wet? This book is obviously not about horse riding.

message 22: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
No problem :)

Hahaha that is one hectic title!

message 23: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lauren wrote: "With regards to the shocking title what about Rode Hard, Put Up Wet? This book is obviously not about horse riding."

Good grief, yeah that definitely counts.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Hahaha should be um... interesting.

message 25: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Kudos to you Lauren - I wouldn't have the guts to add that to my Goodreads library!

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
I am going to have to read it fast! Just think how bad it is going to be to have it as my currently reading title! Oh well those who know me know I am incapable of blushing so I will just brazen it out.

message 27: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
17. Read a book that has something to do with your zodiac sign (either something in the story or on the cover or in the title or author's name).

Ok so I was always Sagittarius now i'm the new star sign (O something) that came out. So what now? Can I use either? As both can be argued as my star sign.

message 28: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I remember you or someone else posting about new star signs, but I don't remember anything about them. Consequently, I can't say anything about the validity of the new signs, but I'm just going to stick with my old one.

My newspaper and all the other astrolgy books and sites I look at (ok that makes me look like some new age freak which I am not but I like to read abot it because I do believe there's more to it but only if you draw your own horoscope and not look at what the papers say each morning and live your life according to that) all still use the old one, so I am going to use the old one, but I have no problems if you want to use the new one. As long as it is this one and not the egyptian, Celtic, Chinese or Incan one. (or any I left out)

BTW what does Ophiuchus stand for and what animal/person/thing is it?

message 31: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Thanks Barbara :)
Ophiuchus:
* serpent-bearer, It was formerly referred to as Serpentarius

message 32: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments So am I a Capricorn this year or a Sagittarius? Jan 20

message 33: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Either one :)

message 34: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Just need some clarification on certain tasks:

20. Read a book set in two different times: is it ok if there are more than two, or must it be two exactly?

22. Read a book set in an alternate world: how do you define an alternate world? Is it an alternate version of earth? Fantasy worlds? Other planets? Parallel dimensions? All of these?

message 35: by Claudia (last edited Jun 08, 2011 10:08AM) (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments For alternate world, use the widest definition of it possible. So basically anything that's different from the world we live in now. Fantasy / other planet / dimension / whatever.

message 36: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh awesome, thanks :)

About Read an autobiography/biography or memoir.

Does a book on the second world war count? Or a book like a short history of south africa?

message 40: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments That's a difficult question. Uhh... an (auto)biography would be the life of a person / group of people and a memoir a person's thoughts / experiences during a specific time of their lives or on a subject. Like someone's experience during the world war, or someone's view of south africa. I have no idea! I should nominate more straight-forward tasks! Help.

message 41: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Lol I was just wondering if that type of branching out counts :) history-biographies and such

message 42: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I said in task 20 when I nominated it that it should be set in at least two times. So more than two is allowed. But at least two of these have to take up large chunks of the book. So for example if someone is doing timetravel in a book of 500 pages it can't be that they spend 5 pages in one time and 10 in another and 7 in a third etc. They have to spend like 100 pages in one time and 150 in a second and 130 in a third etc. It is ok if they spend a little amount of pages in a different time but then it doesn't count. So just a fleeting memory doesn't count. They really have to spend time there.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Im too scared to read anything in case it matches up with one of the as yet un-named challenges! Im still pissed that I read the tropic of cancer a few weeks ago and now it can't count!

message 44: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh Lauren, you read so fast it hardly matters!

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
I suppose... but seriously have you read Tropic of Cancer? It was so bad I thought someone would sent flowers and chocolates as a consolation prize! I firmly believe it was banned in more then 3 countries not for its over use of the C word but just to protect the inhabitants form Henry Miller's drunken rambling. I will not reread!! I'm following Lu's example and changing star signs. I am now a Gemini and apparently a far less moody person for it :D Rant over!

message 46: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lol, I tried to read Tropic of Cancer once or twice, but I'm not a patient person, and I need a lot of patience for stream of consciousness writing. Will still give it a chance when I'm in the right mood though - it's one of those cult books I'd like to have read. I really enjoyed Quiet Days in Clichy by the same author - it's much much easier to read, and a lot shorter.
