Jim Belushi was two movies with a German Shepherd, but I can't remember if either of the plots involved a diamond heist. "K-9 PI" and "K911," but I don't think either is the right one. I've never seen them, but I used to work at Blockbuster, so I've seen them sitting on the shelf and I'm pretty sure I read the back of the covers at some point.

(And it's taxidermy that preserved the bear Fadhilah.)
