Jaye Mongo: Adventures in Trash
Mongo Adventures in Trash by Ted Botha
I LOVE this book/type of book.

I also read Garbage Land: On the Secret Trail of Trash
Garbage Land On the Secret Trail of Trash by Elizabeth Royte .
In MONGO I found the people as interesting as the things they found and how they live.
I hope there are some other books floating around out there that are similar.
Thanks for the help !

Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage

i'm sorry, are you interested just in books about garbage/trash or about people who find treasures in garbage??

Greg | 117 comments Mongo was a great book. I don't know of another exactly like it but parts of A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books deal with people who find books in trash. Also some of the earlier, pre-2000 issues of Cometbus dealt sometimes with dumpster diving in a narrative format and those can be found in, Despite Everything. And while this is really dated, Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book had a chapter on how to live off of other peoples garbage.

I've been thinking about your question. It seems I may be interested in people who go a different way in their lives. The people in MONGO certainly aren't your everyday job types.

So my request may be for books about people with a different path in the daily trudge.
Fiction or non-fiction.

I'm not sure this is even clear.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll try the 1st.
Please see my previous post. You may have some other books to suggest for me, though i'm not so sure I made it clear.

Jaye so. I put an addition to the heading, hoping for some renewed interest.

so, let me try some of these on you.

Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea and of the Beachcombers, Oceanographers, Environmentalists, and Fools, Including the Author, Who Went in Search of Them which might combine the initial garbage-interest with some people doing some cool and unusual stuff

Fraud: Essays, which is a collection of essays/articles by david rakoff, most of which feature him doing things he is in no way qualified to do, and the resulting consequences

A.J. Jacobs, who does things "just to see". he is like a less irritating morgan spurlock, maybe? he has four books out, i think, in which he pursues one idea or experiment single-mindedly, and then shares it with the class.

do any of these hit what you are looking for?

Jaye I'm here...finally...to thank you for all your suggestions.

I am going to start with The Guinea Pig Diaries: My Life as an Experiment
The Guinea Pig Diaries My Life as an Experiment by A.J. Jacobs .
