Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11206 comments 20.1 Most Improved Player - Ashley FL's task: Birthday Time!
My birthday is during the Summer Reading Challenge. In honor of birthdays, read one book that satisfies one of the following criteria (using my birthday, August 6th, by way of example):

1. Read a book that has the month of your birthday in the title or in the author's name. (So I could read Light in August or anything by August Wilson). Plurals and possessives (ex. , Three Junes and July's People) are fine, but compound words or a month as a part of a word will not work (i.e. Middlemarch and Maya Angelou = no) This list might help - Months of the Year;

OR

2. Read a book that has the number of your birth day (numeric or ordinal) is in the title (So I could read The 6th Target). The numbers may be spelled out, too. Examples: [[book:Hot Six|6858] or The Sixth Wife would work. The number must be a part of the book's title, subtitle, or series name (as listed on GRs) to count (i.e., the fact that the book is the sixth book in a series would not count). You might find some ideas here: Nothing but Numbers;

OR

3. Read a book that was first published in the year in which you were born (you'll have to admit the year if you choose this option!) (being born in 1970, I could read books off this list Popular books published in 1970)

OR

4. Read a book that has your astrological sign in the title or in the author's name (being a Leo, I could read Welcome to Leo's or anything by Leo Tolstoy). For the purposes of this task, we will be using Western astrology signs and their associated dates. Plurals and possessives will work, but no other variations will be accepted. Titles, subtitles, or series names that include the word "zodiac" will work as well. Example: Zodiac, The Scent of Shadows (Signs of the Zodiac #1). This list might help: When the Moon Is in the Seventh House...” As with all GRs lists, be careful to make sure the book you choose actually fits the task. If you're not sure, please ask.

Series titles are OK IF the series title is used in the Goodreads entry for the book.

Required: State with option you chose when you post.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Hi Ashley Congratulations

I would like to read Hand of Fate which is co-authored by April Henry and Lis Wiehl but wanted to clear the co-author thing first with you because it comes up with Lis Wiehl as the first name.

I think that I might use the book Nineteen Minutes.

Well, that's obviously fine :) 19 is apparently a good day to be born!

I'm having trouble figuring out how this collaboration works. April Henry is listed as "Contributor" on Goodreads for this one (vs as being a co-author on the others). But reading between the lines, I get the feeling she does more of the actual writing and the other woman lends her name and some story ideas? Sort of like James Patterson "writes" the Women's Murder Club books, but it is really Maxine Peatro doing the writing and he lends his name?

(by the by, I see in my research that her co-author is married to Mickey Sherman, who was quite the defense lawyer of rich-kids-behaving-badly where I grew up -- too funny!)

If you know otherwise, let me know. In general I am looking for the actual author (vs a "contributor") but based on what I can sleuth out, I'm going to allow it.

Coralie wrote: "Would 1984 work for nineteen?"
I'll say yes, because said out-loud, I say "Nineteen Eighty-Four".

Absolutely!!

Goodreads isn't letting me post books to posts #2 and #3, so I'll have to add them in later.

Rosemary | 613 comments I am having trouble finding anything I want to read for this task :-(
February, 29 and Pisces are not coming up with anything.

I found a list for my birth year, 1960 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1960_books and I picked out Night by Elie Wiesel. But when I look at this on Goodreads, it gives the date of first publication in French (1958) not the date of first publication in English (1960). Can I still count this book for 1960?

message 15: by Gayla (new)

Gayla Bassham (sophronisba) | 64 comments Rosemary, did you look at February? I wasn't wild about it, actually, but it was longlisted for the Booker and a lot of people raved about it.

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments here is a decent link for popular books in various years - I think its set to 1981 right now, but just change the year

message 17: by Felina (new)

Felina | 0 comments I wasn't having any luck with 18 or december so I'm moving to books published in 1983. And I found Pet Sematary by Stephen King and I'm stoked.

Sweet task Ashley FL.

Amanda (amandapearl) | 267 comments 27 September 1987 Libra. really hard lol. People born in April or June or May will have an easier time because they are more common names. And who ever heard of a person named Libra lol. Looks like a book from 1987 it is...I'm thinking The Tommyknockers

I'm sorry, but we have to go by the date of first publication. Especially if that is what Goodreads lists as the first date (which is what the Moderators would check).

I'm not sure if any of these look interesting to you, but there are several books with "twenty-seven" in the title: http://www.goodreads.com/search?q=twe...

Thanks for the suggestions! lol there's one called twenty seven days in september. However, I'm trying really hard to only read books I already own. I figured if I've spent money on them I might as well read them. But for this task it really limits my choices.
