Félix (habitseven) A lot of girls wear skirts and dresses while riding in Portland. It's a major distraction attraction pour moi.

I think it's a mark of civilization.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Dearest Janine,

Thank you for posting pictures of hot girls riding bicycles, as I wasn't quite awake but now I am. Yee-ha.

Sincerely,

RA

I live near two bike paths, one more recreational and one not an official path but a regular route for the people with expensive bikes and fancy bike clothes. I don't think I've ever seen a bike rider wearing a skirt, but I will watch closely now.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Kevin! I was going to message you to find out where you've been lately, and tell you that i missed you, but apparently pictures of hot girls on bicycles set off some sort of internal alert and sent you running to the computer.

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments The story sounds a little odd to me. You see people on the streets of New York in various states of revealing dress/undress all the time, and no one pays the slightest attention. But I guess there's no accounting for one police officer's actions. He may have had ulterior motives...

Because we tend never to revise our local penal code but simply add new laws to it, there are still colonial-era regulations on the books that forbid women from wearing skirts that expose their ankles to public view. These are, however, not enforced and would almost certainly be unenforceable if challenged. There's also a law that defines three unmarried women living at the same address as a house of ill repute. (This too is not enforced.)

In any event, even though this is not the most bicycle-friendly town in general--too much traffic, very few bike lanes--you do see women bicycling wearing skirts here. So the cop giving the Dutch visitor a ticket was out of line, Janine. On behalf of my fellow residents of old New Amsterdam, excuus hiervoor!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I feel compelled to wear a skirt the next time I ride my bike in solidarity with female Dutch bicyclists.

Appology accepted.

If where I'm now was New York I'd be living in an house of ill repute. Who knew?

message 14: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments I promise not to tell the authorities, Janine. And in any case, you seem like a very wholesome person to me.

message 15: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments Well, as long as I don't wear a skirt on a bicycle I am. I will admit the combination is prone to wardrobe malfunctions.

So I guess all-female dormitories are bordellos in disguise?

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Presumably.

It's an 18th-century law, and obviously it wasn't framed with the circumstances of the modern world in mind. It plays no role in today's legal system at all. I just heard about it because there was an article in the NYTimes a couple years ago about antiquated city regulations that have never technically been repealed--no singing in Central Park, for instance--even though they have been superseded by other, countervailing regulations or would simply be laughed out of court if ever used as a pretext for arrest, issuance of a summons, etc.

Laws are funny things. There is a law still on the books in VA about not washing your donkey in the street on a Sunday. I kid you not.

Are there really such events? Please don't be teasing!

Edit: I just googled. There are.
