Of the HuffPost's list, I'd like to stay in that lovely house in Tuscany for a while, I do believe.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I don't like any of those houses. I'm not sure why. I need to think on this...I can't think of a house that immediately comes to mind.

message 3: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I'd go for Manderley in its prime without Rebecca or Mrs. Danvers.

Brittomart Not 124. It's haunted.

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments The ones on the list aren't that appealing to me. I wouldn't mind the apartment Bertie Wooster rents when he comes to New York, but only if Jeeves is there to keep everything ship shape. Ricky and Lucy's apartment, with Fred and Ethel next door, also seems pretty cozy, although that's TV, not a book, so I guess it doesn't count. Dickie Greenleaf's villa in the fictitious seaside town of "Mongibello" in The Talented Mr. Ripley would be great in principle, but as I recall, things didn't work out so well for Dickie, so maybe I'll take a pass on that one.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I always wanted to live in the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse.

Pemberley, the Maine house of the protagonist of Harlot's Ghost, maybe the house in The Pilgrim Hawk, Inspector Lynley's ancestral home in Cornwall in the Lynley mysteries, maybe Manderley, the London townhouse in The Death of the Heart, the protagonist's house in Saturday. There were scenes in the Magic Mountain that didn't make the sanitarium sound half bad. Maybe the house in The Remains of the Day.

It's an interesting question because it makes me reflect on how thoroughly, or how well, an author has described a house or given you a feel for it.

message 8: by Louise (new)

Louise Howl's moving castle :-)
Or maybe Cerin and Meran's house in Charles de Lint's Newford books. It's full of trinkets, faeries and has the most wonderful garden.

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments I'm with LG in a vote for Pemberly. Or the old manor from The Secret Garden, after the end of the story. Secret gardens, hidden passages, rolling moors? Yes, please.

Oh me too! That was my favorite thing at Disney when I was seven.

The Secret Garden would be frickin cool.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments May I count the island of Avalon in The Mists of Avalon? It's amazing in my mind...

Also, I'd like to third the secret garden thingy. And I'd also love to live in any of the homes featured/described in Dorothea Benton Frank's books.

Duh. Why was that not the first one to pop into my head? Heartily seconded. It even trumps Pemberly.

Sarah | 13814 comments I've been playing the Wii Lego Harry Potter, and i have to say it's one of my favorites of the lego series. Hogwarts works so well as a setting for this sort of thing. All of the games encourage you to punch things and explore, but Hogwarts makes sense as a setting for that sort of engagement with your surroundings. At Hogwarts you'd expect that if you cast a spell on a suit of armor it made do a little dense, spit out some coins, and then collapse into a pile. Etc.
Anyway, it's fun to wander around is what I'm trying to say.

Jammies Thornfield Hall, without the crazy woman in the attic.

The Burrow, with lots of Weasleys.

The little cottage in Mandy.

Badger Hall from The Wind in the Willows.

Bag End.

LOOOVE Lego Harry Potter. I had to stop playing for a while because I wasn't getting anything else done.

I don't ever let myself play more than one level at a time.

Yes. YES. YES!!!! Sorry, I got a little overexcited. The TARDIS would be the ultimate awesome place to live. I spend most of my time there now anyway. If I could share it with David Tennant, even better. (Matt Smith is my favorite Doctor, but Tennant is just soooo cute. And that Scottish accent.)

I was wondering how much my assessment of a particular fictional house was influenced by the movie or TV version, rather than what's in the book. With Pemberley, there's no question the miniseries' visuals have taken over my brain; Lyme Hall is Pemberley...

Elizabeth Bennet's house was awfully nice too. I can't find a picture of it.

Sarah | 13814 comments There's a lovely childrens' book called Need A House? Call Ms. Mouse in which a mouse architect designs the perfect houses for her friends. Several of them seemed like great places to live (if you were a frog, fox, etc.)

Love. I spend an inordinate amount of time watching and/or reading Doctor Who. I have been trying to renew interest in the thread here in TC semi-dedicated to it by posting about the new episodes, but no go so far. (Just so everyone doesn't think I'm trying to hijack this one for my obsession :))

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I stay out of that thread because I"m not caught up - I'm still watching Tennant seasons.
