I'm reading Twilight. I just finished Choke I was disappointed in it, so its nice to be on to a new book.

message 2: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilyabbott) I am currently reading Ursula Under, it's a nice read to get me through the stress of exams.

Lauren Mags | 22 comments I am reading God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything So far it is a good read and Christopher Hitchens is very witty. It is too bad that he has esophageal cancer and can no longer speak :-( He is a brilliant man.

Emily: That sounds like such a good book. How is it written? Is it historical or written more like fiction?

Lauren: That is an interesting choice. Do you agree with his viewpoints? Did you agree with them going in or has he changed how you view religion?

message 5: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Mags | 22 comments I absolutely agree with his viewpoints. This book also gave me new reasons to not like organized religion. People are out there preaching that condoms are bad and that if you get a disease it was brought upon you. People killing others because they don't believe in the same "god". I can keep going on with the examples that he gives but that would be a whole other discussion :-P
I only disagree with one thing. I think some people need religion. They need to be a part of a group, and the thought of an afterlife makes people feel better. As long as these people aren't hurting or killing others, they can believe in whatever they want :-)

I've just recently finish the Hunger Games Trilogy. It's an amazing series and I can't quite step away from the story and characters just yet. I have read some other books but still the HGT got me good.

Yeah, that is one of my favorites, I finished reading it (crying of course) and I felt that "what now" feeling. I remember when I finished reading Harry Potter for the first time (finished the series) there was a serious case of "what now?"s it took me forever to walk away from that series.

message 9: by Viv (new)

Viv (a_pocky_box) | 156 comments Mod
I hope it passes. But maybe it never will. It's one of those stories that the characters stay with you forever. More so with Harry Potter. Okay everyone don't hurt me... but I have yet to even start the Harry Potter series. Would it be insane to read the whole series before the last movie comes out? o_o

-gasp- It depends on how fast you read. I know that now that I have my nook and I dont have to carry the actual books around with me, I could probably do it... if you REALLY read, you could probably get them all done in a little over a week. I'd say 1, 2 & 3 might take a day each with a little time to spare, 6 you might be able to do in a day 4,5 & 7 might take two days... it depends on how fast you read etc. I'd say give yourself 2 weeks min to read the whole set. What does everyone else think?

I'll read it with you if you are going to attempt it! Just let me know! :D <3

It's daunting but I will do it! haha I probably won't be in pace with you. However, the ultimate goal will be to read the final book BEFORE the movie!

agreed!!! See my other post! <3

message 13: by Adriana (new)

Adriana I just read Bridge to Terabithia and cried my eyes out and now I'm reading a book because of a recommendation I recieved called Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry.

The Hunger Games is amazing! The last book made me change my mind on what boy I wanted Katniss to be with. What do you think about the movie? Are you going to watch it?

message 14: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Lee | 56 comments Mod
I'm really excited about the movie, its funny because no matter how Peeta and Gale are described in the books, my mental picture of them is totally different. Through the entire series I pictured both of them as brunettes. I'm curious because my mental Katniss also looks totally different than the actress. She has grown on me though and I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie. My roomate and I are already planning on attending the midnight showing. I've never read Bridge to Terebithia.. I'll have to add it to my list (if its not already on there) What is Gathering Blue about?

message 15: by Adriana (new)

Adriana You did the same thing that I did with Katniss. The choice of Katniss has grown on me. I actually like her but the others.. well I'll just have to see. Have you seen her picture as Katniss on Entertainers Weekly? I can't believe I haven't looked at when does it come out. I'm guessing 2012 right? Bridge to Terabithia is a really young book. I remember maybe middle school or elementary discovering it but I never read it so I decided to. I asked for dystopian recommendations and Gathering Blue was one. It is kind of creepy like they said. It's about a girl who has just lost her mother in a world that shuns the weak. She is really good at weaving though so she is given the task of caring for a robe? I don't know I haven't gone to the robe so far but I'll tell you more later and if it's worth the read.

I know! I saw her on EW and was just like hmmm ok I guess... I'm not sure when it comes out off the top of my head I'll have to look it up. I love young books for lazy days by the pool or whatever.. I still read Island of the Blue Dolphins sometimes. Its an easy read and doesn't take too long, an hour or two and you are done with it but such a good story you just get completely immersed. Sometimes you just need a book you can read in one sitting you know? Please let us know if the book is worth reading when you get to the end, it sounds kind of different...

message 17: by Adriana (new)

Adriana I do love dystopians but I don't know about this one. I'll let you know.

Ohhhh the HGT movie casting, in my opinion it was good. except for Peeta. I just can't see it. But i had the same reaction with Katniss' casting. She grew on me after i saw the EW cover.

If you guys like the HGT, you should try reading Divergent by Veronica Roth. I enjoyed this one.

message 19: by Adriana (last edited Jul 08, 2011 07:57PM) (new)

Adriana Peeta and Gale are a bit iffy for me and then Lenny Kravitz the singer is going to be Cinna. What? I don't even know if he can act (actually I looked him up and he was in a couple of movies)and I forget who but they had someone else in the running that would have fit perfectly.
*edited* I thought they missed some people but those come out later in the other books. It was funny discovering it. It was a WOW moment on my part.

message 20: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Finished Gathering Blue and it was actually pretty good. I found out it was the second book of The Giver which I've heard about. It's not a really modern book but it's not like a book that you would get assigned in school that was from a long time ago and you ended up hating it. The book is about this girl named Kira Her father dies before she was born by beasts. Her mother just died and she's waiting till her soul departs in the Field of Leaving. People put their children here if they have something wrong with them and let them die which would have happened to Kira with her twisted leg but her mother defied the others and kept her. She is special. She can sort of feel the cloth and it comforts and warns her and be creative unlike the others in the village. When her mother dies the women steal her food from her garden and try to kill her! The mothers smack their children all the time and are pretty much evil. Things happen and she is picked to restore this robe that every year the singer tells the history with it on. It is pretty good and worth the read.

Now I'm reading Wicked. (:

Yeah, I'm kind of iffy about Cinna as well... I dont know I just pictured something different you know? Hmm Gathering Blue sounds good. I still need to read The Giver. I'm still doing the HP thing. I'll probably bust out Wicked after the movie on the 15th.

message 22: by Adriana (new)

Adriana I've been really wanting to read the Hunger Games Trilogy so I'm going to read it before Wicked.

Sure, I'll tell you when I'm done. I got so excited waiting to get the book I went on youtube and saw the interactive trailer. It was pretty cool.

Adriana Lauren wrote: "Just started "Water for Elephants""

Are you reading it because you saw the movie and liked it?

message 38: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Mags | 22 comments I actually didn't see the movie yet! A lot of people have recommended the book to me so I picked it up. I'll probably watch it after I am finished.

message 39: by Adriana (new)

Adriana I was thinking of the same thing with The Help but I caved and watched the movie. I'll probably read it later. I haven't seen the Water for Elephants movie either but do want to try to read the book first.

Adriana Reading Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult

*I finished reading this book and now I have rant. This book was so well written, heartfelt, and interesting. But when the book started towards the end I was so disappointed. This book has the WORST ENDING EVER. I was like really? really? This is how you end this book? I am so angry now and going to tell anyone I can. If anyone has read this book as well please tell me you agree. I mean what kind of ending was that!!!

message 44: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Wow, never heard of a book like that. Very original. Tell me what you think after your done please.

Now reading The Invention of Hugo Caberet. I hope I like it because I discovered recently the trailer.

message 45: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Hugo was good but I kind of got bored at the end.

Reading The Piper's Son it has the same characters as Saving Francesca. Hopefully it's not a sequel or anything because I haven't read it yet.

I just finished How I Live Now. I guess you can say this book is a modern day version of Jane Eyre. The books shows life before and after war and how the main characters and the world cope with it.

Now reading A Young Wife.

message 47: by Adriana (new)

Adriana hmm. I never read Jane Eyre so I don't know. Thanks btw.

Now reading Before I Fall

message 48: by Adriana (last edited Sep 17, 2011 01:56PM) (new)

Adriana Before I Fall was amazing. I thought I wasn't going to like because someone told me it was okay and in the beginning the main character and her friends are so annoying. This book made me so anxious to get to the end but I'm glad I wasn't impulsive and stuck to reading it regularly like I always do. The transition from the beginning to the end of the book is great and how she changes and grows. Really good book!

Now I have to steal The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake back from my mom and read it.
