I just finished "Voices" and really enjoyed it, perhaps the best one so far. "Operation Napoleon" was different, with the nice little twist at the end.

Yes, I finally finished Voices as well; I thought the plot was amazing and so interesting. It's very dark, too! He's a real find.

Oh, I read this and, tonight, I have Summertime Death to download when I get home. :D

The Scandi-Nordic lit world has really opened up for us here in the U.S. It's so exciting to discover all these "new to us" authors!
Kallentoft, Indriadason, Van Veeteren, Marklund, etc, they all have such a different pace. Something that does take awhile to get used to, but that's part of the fun of it don't you think? I'm looking forward to weeks of great reading.

Feel free to come to Britain Eva - cold, windy and chucking it down as per our usual summer weather lol

Thanks, Ian. I'd love to. Going to Copenhagen later in July. Hopefully, it won't be more than 25 there. Edinburgh last year was simply perfect!!! Not only regarding the weather. Today I heard about flash floods in GB so hope you are not affected.

(I've spent the summer there in '97... the city must have changed a lot since) It's about 100 F (38 C) -ish for usually 3 months straight in summer. Today it was only 93 F (36 c?) and it felt fresher, ha :p
If only it would rain here...
I started Budapest Noir... craving for something dark and twisted somewhere exotic (however, ideally without that many Hungarian or otherwise weird names).

Saw this on tv the other week c/w Dutch subtitles so I could watch. Excellent episode so imagine the book will read well. We are getting two Liza Marklund episodes weekly during June Detective Month and I was pleased to sample these as see them lists often on German station ARD but my German is enough to shop only and they do not subtitle but dub everything. Same with a series of an author I am currently reading Helene Tursten, they had four in a row of her Irene Huss books on tv and all dubbed.....they looked the typical excellent Scandinavian high quality but my lack of language skill made it impossible sadly. If they like books, they dub the series from the original country or make their own series, as they do so very well with all the Donna Leon Brunetti books. Bit of trivia but perhaps interesting .....

uuuuf, sorry, but Texas is out of question 4 me (at least in summer). but when it was 32 it did feel cooler! But when you were here you saw the prefab houses that accumulate the heat. so, we must be resistant. Hopefully after my Monday exam and weather allowing I'll be able to start reading the June book ;)
Anyone familiar with:
Varg Veum is the central character in a series of crime novels, written by the Norwegian author Gunnar Staalesen, about a private detective who lives in Bergen, on the west coast of Norway. The books have been translated into several languages, including English, German, and Swedish.
Five of the novels are available in English: At Night All Wolves Are Grey, Yours Until Death, The Writing on the Wall, The Consorts of Death, and Cold Hearts.
There are two series of films and have only seen two but excellent. Watched Black Sheep last night....very good. Will track down some books.

Just started The Torso...have bought Disgrace by Jussi Alder Olsen but have been looking forward to it for so long I want to save it for my summer hols. Not sure about The Torso..finding the writing a bit clunky and the domestic bits too cosy. She reminds me a little of Camilla Leckburg..a writer I didn't like at all. But only on page 40. Would definitely recommend The Exception which I finished recently. I know Kenneth rated it too.

Just started The Glass Devil and have Night Rounds on iBook waiting. Read them one after the other and enjoying them but Torso gets pretty chilling and hoping this will be less so! Also about to start Disgrace as my e reading. Curious as really found his other book an edge of the seat read!
My last e book was Woman with Birthmark by Hakan Nesser and although I warmed to Reinhart and his lady and the killer, the rest was so tedious! Especially as I have been reading the likes of James Thompson, Asa Larsson and Helene Tursten...such good writers!

Try googling the book name or on Amazon. Then check the DVD has your language. YellowBird puts out most Wallanders but now many seem huge joint ventures. Germany have them dubbed and England's BBC4 has many Saturday nights ...which we love. Second season French series Spirals ended tonight.

IMO it is well worth while to track down the original production DVD and check there are sub titles in a language you can manage. The productions coming out of Scandinavia the last ten years and France, Italy, Germany are frankly way better than the flashy other. June was detective month here and in neighboring countries, and I saw ARD in Germany had four films listed.....all the four Helene Tursten books on Irene Huss.....but my sad situation being language challenged is that I cannot follow it as Germany dubs. So I am hoping to see the, with English or Dutch subs on tv or available to buy on DVD soon. Appears to me that the mass interest in the books has generated a production full steam ahead of films and series. So far it has meant the best READING and indeed VIEWING ever. Very happy :-). Good luck. Some friends in Canada managed to order DVDs through their library and rental. Cannot hurt to ask....
