Anna (aetm) | 228 comments Just finished Jan Costin Wagner' Silence. Another sort of "Finnish" find of crime authors recently. :)
He's a German married to a Finn, lives half of his time in Germany, half in Finland. Stylewise somewhat like M Y Joensuu, or other old-fashioned Scandi crime (Sjöwall & Wahlöö etc).

Yeah, this works. Get yourself associated with some literary review publication. Then you can go to the sites pubishers use as feeds for reviewers, like Edelweiss and Net Galley. You request a book via the publication, apply for it on Net Galley or wherever, the publisher approves it and you download it. Bingo presto. You'll never pay for a book again. Of course, you have to review them, or most anyway, citing a reason if you don't.

Thanks Sharon, The discussion is interesting but after reading the book it is a surprise to know it has been made into a film.

As a grandfather it was funny to read Camilla Läckberg's The Hidden Child. Everybody is pregnant or was or is again. She has several story lines going on that make this book a good read. A good ending in several of the instances she has written about. Make's me wonder if she's also pregnant. After all they were in Thailand when she wrote this book.

message 859: by Ian (new)

Ian | 35 comments Camilla is my favourite Swedish author - and is close behind Jo Nesbo as the best of the bunch. Cannot wait until #7 (The Lost Boy) comes out in the UK in March. I think my absolute favourite of her's was The Stonecutter.

Go to her in the heading of "Iceland", then click on her name, her books will come up, usually they will be in order, but you can check each one under "other editions". Not a list but almost.

Filming of the new TV series Fjällbacka Murders began in August 2011 based on the characters from Läckberg's novels, but the stories will be new, with actors Claudia Galli and Richard Ulfsäter playing Erica and Patrik.[31] 'My books are my children & I want to hand them over to somebody who will look after them,' Camilla is quoted as saying.[32]
Läckberg and her friend and fellow author Denise Rudberg have hosted the literature series Läckberg & Rudberg on SVT.

I've read the first 6 featuring Patrik and Erica, and enjoyed reading them, however Erica's constant interference can be annoying.

Will there be a group read next month. Just making sure I didn't miss it.

message 866: by Ian (new)

Ian | 35 comments I disagree Lili. I think Erica plays a vital part in Camilla's books. What I find frustrating is the when Patrik works it all out...and then we have to wait 3 chapters before he reveals it to us!!!

Just finished a new (old if you look at her first time publishing 1993) book in English, My First Murder by Leena Lehtolainen. It's the girl next door solves a murder. (In the first person.) The book was only 242 pages, so it's an easy one niter. I was surprised my library had it, but I swept it into my reading bag and an happy I did.

Kathy | 8 comments I am just about to finish Lost Memory of Skin by Russell Banks....very thought provoking read on how we look at others...how we perceive them vs. the real them and how one loner child comes out into the world....not quite at the finish but very "can't put it down" book (despite disturbing subject matter). Surprisingly good book. I didn't expect it.

Anyway, I'm happy to see Erlendur back, I've missed him in the last couple of books.

Anyone else having very strange search and list results? If so, any tips?

Jeremy Megraw (jmegraw) | 48 comments Just finished Jussi Adler-Olsen's The Absent One a.k.a. Fasandræberne, (published in UK as Disgrace). This 2nd installment in the Dept Q series shares many of the same elements that made the 1st enjoyable. There is a hearty dose of Jussi's signature mix of brutality and humor, as Carl Morck is plunged into a difficult case involving the higher echelons of society while his investigative team slowly takes shape (expect another oddball addition to Dept Q). As with the 1st, Morck strives to maintain a normal personal life (even a romance) while the case heats up with an explosive finale. I liked the 1st one a little more, but I certainly look forward to the next.

Read The Nightmare by the duo that makes Lars Kepler. Joona solves all problems except his own. Many plots run together and end up being only one large plot. It was an interesting book. Two days, 500 pages.

Her latest novel "When the Doves Disappeared" has been bought by the American publisher Knopf. I guess an English translation is coming sooner or later.

It's the next part of the series telling about Estonia's history. ALMOST as good as Purge but only almost.

So it's not a continuation of the Zara/Aliide storyline then. I'm left wondering if Zara got back to Vladivostok and told her grandmother the story. Was Hans alive or dead when Aliide went back to him at the end? Who was double-crossing who during the communist regime - was Martin double-crossing Aliide or the other way round?

message 889: by Fizzycola (last edited Feb 08, 2013 03:21PM) (new)

Fizzycola | 163 comments Nope, it's not a continuation of the story of the persons but a continuation of the story of Estonia.

Oksanen does leave many questions unanswered. Maybe she thought it isn't important to know how every storyline ended. Actually, didn't bother me when I was reading the book, and even less now, afterwards.

There is an good/excellent movie made of the book, too. I haven't seen it yet but people say it is more straightforward than the book and answers at least some of those questions.

Just finished Helene Tursten's The Golden Calf or as Goodreads names the only eBook available, giving no Kindle, Gold Digger! Strange as this was pre ordered on the mighty overcharging Amazon.com and came through to my kindle on the day released. Is there a way to address this issue on GRs?

I love reading this writer's books because they flow so well and her ability to give just enough life and connection to Irene and her family, colleagues and rest of the story characters is excellent. While I loved her first three books out, and could hardly put them down! I was disappointed with the story, not the writing of it in the later released book Night Rounds written in 1999/translated 2012 and The Golden Calf is a 2004 book JUST translated and released 2013! There are SIX more being translated according to my research.
WHY translations take so long I cannot comphrend but I worry where the writer is taking IRENE HUSS as she seems to have chosen to write in REAL TIME! IMO a mistake. This is book five and she has so much of the early stories components and dynamics changing it worries me.
However, she is a pleasure to read. Just wish there were ratings for enjoyment of reading and separate for story content!

No idea how but good idea Ian, thanks.
BTW I see you are reading Parfum. I read it a good many years ago when it came out and was very impressed with it. First book IMO based on sense of smell. The film a few years back I found quite good too but not with the same 'sense' as the book. Remember at the time it was published it was a huge discussion in the media, caused quite a stir. Sure would love to hear what you think of it. Happy weekend.
