There could be others but Laurie Thompson also translated for Asa Larsson and Hakan Nesser. I think it makes a world of difference as to who is the translator. Another translator I watch for is Steven T. Murray.

Finished The Quisling Orchid by Dominic Ossiah and I'll be thinking about this book for several weeks. I gave it 5 stars. It was about WWII and how the Nazi's treated the Norwegians. It played out how I thought it would until the final chapter. Don't read it till it's over. It has a lot of sex in it and triangles. Dominic really pulls it off, to me. If you like WWII I would recommend this book.

Thought that Game by Anders de la Motte was a well thought out book. HP is the little brother of Rebecca and served 10 years in prison for her. It's the story of HP finding a phone on a train and it asks him if he wanted to play a game. The game gives you points and money for playing it. HP plays it very well until he is kicked out for squealing on the number 1 rule of the game. You don't squeal on the game. He tries to get back in the game and ends up destroying it. We think. Maybe not according to Farook.

Great book.

Thanks to other GR readers who mentioned this author.

I just finished The Strangler's Honeymoon. Since you liked ...Winsford" I think I'll take that up next. I also have Summer with Kim Novak and The G File. So I think I have enough to keep me going for awhile. I just love his books! If you've read any of these I would appreciate your

I have read them all and I also enjoy his writing very much. Some are quite quiet and take time to develop but those are the VV series mostly and one of the pleasures IMHO of reading a series with characters you get to know and follow. HN standalone a have all IMO been excellent reading. His next series set in Italy I have not managed to get any translations of yet but curious......
You have the 9th and 10th of the VV series. The last VV book was long but tidy!
There are 10 Van Veeteren books all in all. Barbarotti not translated yet.
NOTE ordered two DVD box sets from Amazon of the Van Veeteren series and watching slowly and enjoying them...

message 2564: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Evans | 36 comments I haven't read them all and didn't read them in order but every book has been a really good read. I have also bought 2 DVDs of 6 VV films which I've yet to see. I'm looking forward to that. So many good crime series on TV at the moment. As well as Undercover, Marcella, Line of Duty I'm watching Follow the Money, Thicker than Water and Blue Eyes. Is there anything else on British TV that I'm missing?

Well I read an ARC copy of The Devil's Cubs by Leena Lehtolainen. And it finishes the other 2 books. Wonder if she'll continue on with the series. She has a half-sister and David has a son. She see's a lynx at the end (a good omen).

Read the ARC of The Girl and the Rat by Jari Järvelä. I gave it 4 stars because it was filled with murders and revenge. It was a thriller. Should be a book 3 when Metro thinks of revenge. It was a pretty fast read.

Gisela Hafezparast | 97 comments Agree. I think this sense of a young family comes through in her books. You know she knows what she is talking about. Always thought that Erika was closely linked to herself. Not that convinced she really knows how a real police station is run. Even for Sweden, it sounds a bit too nice, equalitarian and communal! I love reading it, but not really convinced.

Reading an ARC of The Crow Girl by Erik Axl Sund it's putting me back working, which I haven't done for over 10 years. But I'll get over it, haven't had a client for ever. We'll see how this plays out. I'm only about 20% into it.

I'm funny about psychology stuff since I did it for so long. I can not lie, it's right on with the cutters. So many issues they put up with. The killing of people is a little hard to get use to though.

Well I finally finished with The Crow Girl by Erik Axl Sund. It starts out with some killing, but you aren't sure who killed who even when it states it right in front of you. All throughout the book. You go for a wild ride and it ends up worth it.

I read an ARC of Fatal Headwind by Leena Lehtolainen and it was very interesting. It comes out in July for those of us in the US. It follows Maria Kallio in her job as Commander of the Espoo Violent Crime Unit after being off for a year on maternity leave. It starts out on a trip to and island called Rödskär where we find Maria, Antti and Lida on his family's sailboat. Here they meet all the people that will be interrogated at a later date about Juda Merivaara's death, and unknowing Maria's prior boyfriend's death a year earlier. Lots of the who done it to who. So it's a good read and I highly recommend it.

Hi Molly, hope you enjoy/ed Faceless Killers on your trip. That was the first of 5 Henning Mankell books I translated, and by far the least gruesome (a plus in my book). Try his African novels, in which he used a completely different style.

Barbara Purington | 32 comments Just finished Crow Girl. Blech. Trashy, poorlyy written, hard to follow, IMHO. Based on junk psychology. Waste of my time. Reads like a tabloid. Seems to me the so called writers churned this out to jump on the Nordic crime train. Stieg Larsson wannabes. Had to read another book right away to rid my mind of Crow Girl.

I finished Camilla Grebe's book The Ice Beneath Her: A Novel as an ARC. It was really good because it was told by several people. Emma, Hanne, and Peter, depending on who you believed the story could change from one minute to the next. It was worth reading.
