I just finished, "Between Summer's Longing and Winter's End", by Leif GW Persson. I was really let down in reading it because of the meaningless sex and people in the book. It would have been better if he had left them out. They didn't add to the plot.

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 236 comments Sandra wrote: "Has anybody read Miss Smilla's feeling for snow by Peter hoeg ......and Is this a crime story?"Do you mean "Semilla's Sense of Snow" by Peter Hoeg.
Yes it is a mystery and one of the best I have ever read. I wish Hoeg had written more.
I found the movie to be interesting but not great.

Just starting kindle version Lucifer's Tears finally.

Susan (susanthomas) Sharon wrote: "Just starting kindle version Lucifer's Tears finally."

I began LT at the beginning of this week, Sharon, but I've had to balance it with Henrietta Lacks which I must finish for Monday. I'm anxious to get back to it and really like the characters thus far.

That may be the first time I've seen a Scandinavian book available in the U.S. Amazon store and not the U.K., usually it's the other way around.

Right now I'm reading,"Misterioso" by Arne Dahl and at the same time
I'm reading the parody, "The girl with the Sturgeon Tattoo" by Lars Arffssen.

Susan (susanthomas) Art wrote: "Reading The Laughing Policeman today."

Do you try for a book a day, Art?

message 267: by Art (new)

Art | 48 comments Depends on if I can sleep or not and of course how busy my day is. The smaller straight forward ones like the Martin Beck books, I try to get out of the way in a day or so, the more complex or longer books take more time. I'm still trying to get my library stack under control. I'm always racing due dates, lol.

Just curious because often you say 'today I'm reading' which makes me think it's a one-day thing. I have very seldom pulled that off, no matter how much I wanted to. Can't sit still that long!

message 269: by Art (new)

Art | 48 comments I do break them up and do other things during the day, but some days, depending on the weather and my back, sitting is about all I can do.

I finished,"Misterioso", by Arne Dahl. It was a good book with an ending I can live with. Who is the mysterious woman that ends up with
our guy? Look for the next book.

message 272: by Christina (new)

Christina Myers | 9 comments I just finished reading One Step Behind by Henning Mankell. I loved it. I'm now going back to Jo Nesbo. I had a copy of Redeemer sent to my home because it was impossible to find through the Nook library or in book stores. I can't wait to start.

message 273: by Art (last edited Oct 27, 2011 01:30PM) (new)

Art | 48 comments I have a stack of several books not in our subject area to get through and then I can get to the Water's Edge. So if you don't see me for a short while that's where I'm at.
I think I'm going to have to break down and buy the Redeemer as well, I can't locate anywhere around here at a library.

message 285: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (mrsshorty) | 18 comments I'm reading Asa Larsson .... The Savage Altar, I've got to say this has to be one of my least favourite Scand/Nord authors, I just find it all a bit disjointed so far and not great on the characterisations either

message 288: by Carol (new)

Carol | 5 comments Just started 'Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter' by Tom Franklin. Got good reviews so I'll be interested to see how it pans out. Just finished Camilla Lackberg's 'The Gallows Bird' and was extremely disappointed. The dialogue, especially on the home scene, was dreadful. I really enjoyed her first three books - but this one was banal. Taking a break from the Scandinavian authors after that disappointment.

message 289: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 236 comments "Watchman" next to read and ordered two more Ian Rankin's books on paper back swap. Also reading "Still Life" by Lousie Penny. Have a Jussi Adler-Olsen on order so back in the group.

Only one on the poll I have not read is "1222". Darn.
I would read Adler-Olsen's book again though

message 300: by Fizzycola (new)

Fizzycola | 163 comments LOL!
A Swedish speciality - rotten fish! I'll let Wiki explain it:

"Surströmming (pronounced [sʉ̌ːʂtrœmːɪŋ], Swedish "soured (Baltic) herring") is a northern Swedish dish consisting of fermented Baltic herring. Surströmming is sold in cans, which often bulge during shipping and storage, due to the continued fermentation. When opened, the contents release a strong and sometimes overwhelming odor, which explains why the dish is often eaten outdoors. A Japanese study has shown that the smell of a newly opened can of surströmming is the most putrid smell of food in the world, beating similar fermented fish dishes such as the Korean Hongeohoe or Japanese Kusaya."
