Sad news for fans, I know I have enjoyed reading many of her books now and then over the decades...
A message from Carolyn K. Reidy, President & CEO of Simon & Schuster:
It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that Mary Higgins Clark died earlier today in Naples, Florida, at the age of 92. The cause was complications of old age.
It is impossible to overestimate the importance of Mary’s contribution to our success, and her role in the modern history of Simon & Schuster. Beginning in 1975 with the publication of WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN, each of her 56 books has been a bestseller. There are more than 100 million copies of her books in print in the United States; they are international bestsellers and have been translated into every major and many less well-known languages.
But these storied publishing accomplishments tell only a small part of the larger story that is Mary Higgins Clark. She was, simply, a remarkable woman who overcame an early life of hardship and challenges, never doubting her ability as a natural-born storyteller (and she was one for the ages), and who persevered through trial and rejection until she at last achieved her Holy Grail of being a published author.
Those of us who are fortunate to have worked with Mary—and at Simon & Schuster, that is multitudes—know her as a person of tremendous loyalty and dedication: In this day and age it is exceedingly rare for an author, especially one as prized as Mary, to remain with a single publisher for an entire forty-five-year career.
She was similarly devoted to her readers, until very recently going out of her way to meet them while on tour for every one of her books, and drawing tremendous energy and satisfaction from her interactions with them, even though she long ago could have pulled back from that part of being an author. She was, too, a generous member of the literary community, especially toward new authors, and was well known beyond the publishing world for her support of innumerable philanthropic and civic causes.
Of course, no one here has been associated with Mary longer than Michael Korda, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Simon & Schuster, who says:
“Mary and I have been dear friends, and worked together since 1975, during which time we never had a cross word between us, which surely sets something of a record for author-editor relationships.
“She was unique. Nobody ever bonded more completely with her readers than Mary did; she understood them as if they were members of her own family. She was always absolutely sure of what they wanted to read—and, perhaps more important, what they didn’t want to read—and yet she managed to surprise them with every book. She was the Queen of Suspense, it wasn’t just a phrase; she always set out to end each chapter on a note of suspense, so you just had to keep reading. It was at once a gift, but also the result of hard work, because nobody worked harder than Mary did on her books to deliver for her readers. She was also, unfailingly, cheerful under pressure, generous, good humored and warm-hearted, the least ‘temperamental’ of bestselling authors, and the most fun to be around. I feel privileged to have enjoyed forty-five years of her friendship, and saddened that I will no longer be able to pick up the phone and hear her say, ‘Michael, I think I’ve figured out how to make this story work.’ She was a joy to work with, and to know.”
Yes, she was deservedly known as the Queen of Suspense, but in our building we have long and fondly thought of her as the First Lady of Simon & Schuster. Today we did not just lose an author, but a true and well-loved member of the Simon & Schuster family. I will miss her tremendously, both on a personal and professional level, but we all can be grateful and proud for having had the privilege of being her publisher these many years, and thankful for all she has meant to her millions of readers and for her kindness and service to many generations of authors.
Please join me in offering heartfelt condolences to Mary’s children and extended family.

He's got it coming
by Alexandra Winter
was published 14 February, 2020. Norway.
When Daniella can’t kill to avenge her husband’s death, love is the best revenge.
Police told Daniella that her husband’s car crash two years ago was straightforward—an accident with no witnesses.
They were wrong.
A man named Henrik Larsen saw the crash, but instead of calling an ambulance, left him to die.
Using her hacking skills, Daniella plots her revenge. She gains insight into Henrik’s entire personal life so killing him will be easy. But when that plan falls apart, she’s ready to sacrifice her body and sanity to make the man she hates fall in love with her. She’ll give him exactly what he gave her—an unhealable broken heart.
But everything is not as it seems, and what Daniella learns changes her life.
Side note.....This is Alexandra's second book and she hopes that you will read it and give her some feedback. Her books are all set in Norway so they have that going for them. Amazon has it for $4.99.

Anyone else getting Goodreads emails with notes from ....****the author, shared 11 notes and 10 comments from the ...name of book....... WHAT THE.......is that about? Why would indeed anyone care? We had the book Sister
by Kjell Ola Dahl
published on 29 February 2020. Norway. It is now out in paperback 1 October 2020.
Suspended from duty, Detective Frølich is working as a private investigator, when his girlfriend’s colleague asks for his help with a female asylum seeker, who the authorities are about to deport. She claims to have a sister in Norway, and fears that returning to her home country will mean instant death. Frølich quickly discovers the whereabouts of the young woman’s sister, but things become increasingly complex when she denies having a sibling, and Frølich is threatened off the case by the police. As the body count rises, it becomes clear that the answers lie in an old investigation, and the mysterious sister, who is now on the run. A dark, chilling and up-to-the-minute Nordic Noir thriller, Sister is also a tense and well-plotted murder mystery with a moving tragedy at its heart, cementing Kjell Ola Dahl as one of the greatest crime writers of our generation.

I know that the masthead that I have chosen is now defunct due to Maj Sjöwall's death at 84 years young. But it was previously due to Per Wahlöö death after their 10th Beck Mystery "The Terrorists" was published in 1975. They were never married but put everything I know into what makes an interesting read. Due to this I think it makes the most sense to recognize two of the most influential people that have made Scandinavia and Nordic Mysteries what they are today.

Hey,
Buried angels is one of the best books she has done I think. You should read that one.

I recently read The Gilded Cage by Camilla Lackberg. A radical departure from all of her other novels, but really well written and a great story/mystery. Worth every penny.
Recommended.
Death Deserved is next up after a non crime novel.

Read them all as they come out in English translation.... Perhaps time for you to try reading digital... in my experience the books are easier to locate, access and in many cases very economical. If you require some tips or lists try various ways of searching on GRs. Lots here. Or ask. Enjoy.

Just sharing an observation...📝anyone who knows me well, knows I follow writers, series! 📚The difference having just finished #16 in a character driven series last night and after lunch starting #16 of another series! Cannot put this one down but struggled and skipped some heavy descriptive passages in the last one! What a huge difference in skill with a storyline and character flow! Amazing....📚

Find Them Dead, Roy Grace #. Peter James. Out 9/7/20. iBook.
All The Devils Are Here. Gamache #16. Louise Penny. 1/9/2020 iBook.

And the first book in Peter James series was excellent but the second one was a bit of a letdown for me so I put off reading the next one, Not Dead Enough. But as I own a copy, I’ll get to it one day 😉

Read them all and many of PJ’s stand alone books too but have been up and down the last few years. This book was a great deal of court room description of a trial with jury and very little Roy Grace et al. If a person knew little about court activity it would perhaps read better and he does great research for his various themes but just long for me! Louise Penny just flows as many of the other writer’s character driven series do. Looking forward to the new Rebus due within a month. Have left a few of my writers the last few years and don’t do it easily but happens !!

A suggestion for newer members of English Translations of Scandinavian/Nordic Mysteries & Thrillers. I became interested in this because I have 45-65% blood relations that are Swedish. I've read most of the U.S. authors in Mysteries and Thrillers, so I started to read translations of the Scandinavian authors first with Peter Høeg
who wrote Smilla's Sense of Snow
, and then saw the movie. I was hooked. Then I read an article of a new Swedish author called Stieg Larsson
, who passed away in 2004, so I got Amazon U.K. and bought all his books. They are The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
, The Girl Who Played with Fire
, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
. I watched all these as movies, do the Swedish ones they follow the book. This was a year before it was published in the U.S.. I almost lost them because I let other people read them. If you start out with these books you will probably end up like me, hooked. Good reading.

Switching around a bit lately but happy to start Robert Harris’ V2. Interesting as Nazi Germany's V2 rockets were fired at London from Occupied Holland and the construction of them is interesting as living here we have seen many signs of the areas close to where we live and in Belgium over the years.....
I’m reading and trying to read.... Jo Nesbo’s new The Kingdom.
Anyone have any comments? I don’t know if it’s this second wave of pandemic with the stress, but I cannot get into it......

Finished 2020 with only =46 books read. I blame Covid-19 as my focus and concentration was so affected by three lockdowns and such a lot of restrictions that it was just hard to get into, even favorite authors!!

43. Cook, eat, repeat. Nigella Lawson. HB. Amazon D. 3/12/2020. 5/5 ✅

46. The Secret Life of Mr Roos, Barbarotti #3. Håkan Nesser. iBook. 28/12/2020. 5/5 ✅

Now, moving over to something a bit different and catching up on Mary Lawson books, reading Road Ends from 2013.

Always partial to Val McDermid’s writing. And when the 6th book (Still Life) in the Karen Pirie series was released in October to excellent reviews, I thought it’s about time to read this series from the beginning. Was super surprised at only 8 pages in, to discover that I had already read this one over a decade ago. Although I don’t remember the ending clearly, with each new chapter I start to recall what comes next.
I’ve never been a fan of re-reads & usually don’t, but this book still grabs me. The sign of an excellent writer!

Sharon, Mary Lawson is one of my favourite authors, too. Did you know that she has another book coming out in March? A Town Called Solace.

That happens all the time. It's always interesting to see new data with each book and try to remember the ending.

I believe that Before the Snow must have changed title to A Town Called Solace at some point, as the synopsis is the same for both of them.
I've been wanting to read Will Dean's book Black River
but it's never been on NetGalley or Edelweiss+, so I had to buy, 2nd hand, the book because it was never in e-book form. I will have my review in a few days.

Crow Lake was excellent. I read this over a decade ago. Intended to read some of her other books but never did. You’ve inspired me to seek them out. Thanks for the nudge Sharon!

Looking forward to your review Ken.
I’ve heard so many good things about this series. Purchased a remainder copy of Dark Pines that’s winking at me from my night table.

Thank goodness I listed to the UK BBC Bookclub show this year in lockdown and heard Graham Norton rave about her books. Reminded me and now following her. But it happens now and then that I lose track of an author. Road Ends (apparently from 2013) was a very good read. I look forward to the next two. She is a very good storyteller. Rural northern Ontario reminded me a lot of my youth in rural Manitoba in the 60s. And enjoy how she tells the past of a family through the present of the characters.... Enjoy.

has it been translated in English?
I have read the first 7 (not liking 7 much). I have 8 which is buried Angel, but didn't know the rest has been translated.
What I like about this series is the multiple time line to all stories which make it intriguing , but it seems she has overdone it with this one!
