Adam | 95 comments In the story Skarpi tells in the Tavern in Tarbean, he talks about the 3 greatest namers in the time of Selitos, and those are Selitos, Iax, and Lyra. Shortly after this is stated Lanre tells Selitos that his new name s Haliax, and it refers to his followers as the Chandrian.
I have seen lots of speculation as to the connection between the Chandrian and Iax. Many people have even speculated that Iax is Haliax, but that is untrue.
Supposedly Iax created the Fae, and supposedly Lanre's descent into madness was caused by the Cthaeh.
I was wondering what you guys thought about the relationship between Iax and Haliax, and how Lanre acquired his terrible power.

Adam | 95 comments IHe is first mentioned by skarpi in tarbean. I don't think he's mentioned again until book 2. The majority of the info we have gathered is from book two.

Hey Adam,
I think a lot of people see the connection because Iax is in the name HalIAX. But I was thinking there could be a connectiong.

For instance, Haliax can obviously use naming as he binds Selitos who obviously is some kind of naming badass. I know the Lanre talks to the Cthae (or so people believe) but I dont think that can explain how he would become adept in naming whatsoever. Even Elodin explains to Kvothe you cannot be TAUGHT to Name, you have to figure it out for yourself. So I doubt the Cthae taught Lanre to name, from the very small scene involving the Cthae, I pretty much deduced it just told people the possible futures that could be held. However, maybe Lanre sought out Iax when Lyra was killed. Lanre would probably deduce that Selitos wouldnt help him bring Lyra back at any cost since thats doesnt really seem like his deal, Lyra is dead, that leaves Iax as the only other truly powerful namer in the world and we all know that he probably would be willing to help, especially since he learned naming so he could seek out his true love (the moon). Maybe (extreme postulation) Lanre was tutored by Iax. Thus creating the name and this also sickened his mind, because Iax in my opinion is pretty insane.

Just trying to pop up some of these less active threads to perk interest again.

I was just thinking about Lanre...again. I was rereading the part where the chandrian kill Kvothe's parents. Cinder says Haliax is as good as a watcher.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what this might mean. I know the watchers in comics are some super advanced aliens that chronicle the lives and growth of younger cultures, also the Watchers in Buffy (which Pat is a big fan of) are some secret society that trains up slayers or heroes, plus their are watchers in the bible that are basically fallen angels. So I'm wondering if any of this could apply. Its one of the only moments we get an opinion on Haliax so I've been thinking about it a bit.
