Charlie Life is short , make yourself happy, I like the book because of the animals and people he interacts with, you should read what you want.

Reddwhine I loved it. I read it many years ago and still have a very battered paperback copy. I thought it was funny and touching and part of an interesting time in history. How do you treat animals let alone people without antibiotics? Anyway if it's not your thing move on to something that will interest you. Maybe it is a book that will resonate with your some other time.

Tamara Hey, like Charlie says, life is too short, go on to another one! Maybe you'll change your mind in the future!

Robin I read this trilogy of books. Yes there are more of James Herriot books out there. Don't pressure yourself out. When you are ready or not to read it, it will happen. The movies are okay, but a different slant on things.

Yellowbergamot I finished that one with difficulty too.

Jessaka I really like his books, but I agree that life is short. Don't spend your time reading any more books that do not enthrall you. I say this as an old person. ha.

Danielle Life is too short to reads books you don't enjoy....

Robin this is true. but the books of James Herriot I read when I was younger, in my teens and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

Catherine I loved this 4 book series. it was funny in so many ways. I found another seires, that some of you might like...by Patrick Taylor. he writes in a similar fashion as James Herriot, but he is a human doctor. the country life really gets into your blood!

Genine Franklin-Clark I loved all of Herriot's books, and the TV series based on them, too! We still see Peter Davies (who played Dr. Who and has been in many other series) as Tristan.
As my Dad used to say,"Everyone to his own goat" - his rendition of "Chacun a son gout".

Kathy Harris I fell in love with James Herriot reading his books. Granted, they can be slow reads but they are worth it. Keep plugging away and you will grow to appreciate his stories.

Catherine don't give up on these stories...they are fun and very laughable. James Herriot is quite the story teller...and these are real stories..not fictional! the majority of these things could and did happen to him!

Sas I love these books and I love the T.V series. The stories make me laugh and can make me cry.I read these books years ago and to this day I still can remember many of the animals featured in the stories.

Terri I really liked these books. I love that it was not only about animals but people too

Nataliya i loved this book..Warm humor, genuine love for people and animals, devotion to his proffesion , i was hooked.

VG/Allie I can try but only after i read the other 40+ that i need to read that are on my shelf at home

Nataliya :) I hear u.

VG/Allie I like what my enligh teacher says "so many books so little time"

Nataliya I think I read most of the books (classic) between ages 14-35. First school and than university in Russia, later second M.S. in New York
Now I read for fun mostly :)

Margaret Sharp It's a while since I read it, but the characters and events always left me ready for the next chapter. Quite an assortment of scenarios, some sad, some marvelously uplifting....Nevertheless, if it isn't your cup of tea, then give it a rest....Come back when you're ready to look again with fresh eyes.

Robin Sometimes reading the books out of sequence helps. There is also a video of James Herriot's work. I didn't like it though. To each his/her own.

Heather I have always loved these books. Maybe its a sense of a simpler time. I am also an animal lover, which I think helps.
I am not too fond of the videos, they are slower than the books! ;)

Gary I liked all herriot's books. Heartwarming stories from a good storyteller. Used to keep one of the all things bright and beautiful series on my nightstand when i wanted an easy, happy, positive read at night to forget the day.

Astrid Yrigollen I am a huge fan of James Herriot ( Alf Wright) but I also love animals and country settings. His stories would often make me laugh or cry.

I have seen the BBC series with Christopher Timothy, Robert Hardy and Peter Davison. I watched them until they started adding people who were not in Herriot's original stories. At first the actors were a pale comparison to Herriot's characters but then they grew on me.

Stephen Broeker I greatly enjoy the author and his books and the PBS series. I grew up on a small farm and owned a ranch for some time, myself. At times this series is very funny. At times it is sad - I never get used to putting down an animal. But a very honest portrayal of a life that is dieing out. I do believe that all three of the main characters actually served with the British armed forces during WWII. Mr. Herriot was in the RAF and the brothers Tristen and Sigried served as vets in the European Theature.

Michele Brenton This is a very good book to keep in the loo. That is not an insult. There are some books perfectly suited for reading on the throne. James Herriot books fit the bill perfectly. Each chapter could have been designed specifically for the purpose of keeping one entertained during necessary activities.
They are also good bath reads.
I would keep it in the bathroom and dip in and out when the moments present themselves.

*Wight :-) I have read these books so many times, my copy of All Creatures Great and Small is rather sad looking now...A little while ago I discovered a little known 5th book called Every Living Thing- just as enjoyable as the other 4!

Alice I too, loved all the books by James Herriot.I remember reading one of them after my 3rd child was born and the nurse coming into my room asking me what was I laughing about!

Catherine I loved all James Herriot books, and the programme on BBC too!! he writed in such a way that real life seems so hilarious! and yet there were some serious things happening too...but you still had to laugh!!! :)

Anne Macklin Haven't read it for years but I'll never forget how hard I laughed at the line, "It was a typical farmer's torch. Tiny, with a moribund battery." I'd just been checking cows with one like it.
