Robert Kratky (bolorkay) | 342 comments HI,
ANY INTEREST IN THE WORKS OF BRIAN LUMLEY.... ESPECIALLY HIS "NECROSCOPE" SERIES ?

message 2: by Bill (new)

Bill (billymac) The main 5-book series is awesome. The first book is great, the second book is good, the third book shifts into the series into awesome mode. Enjoy!

Scott Baker | 148 comments Definitely read the Lumley NECROSCOPE series. Some of the best vampire books around.

D4ngerousBeans | 122 comments Necroscope , couldn`t get enough of the first 3 books in the series , then it all started to get a bit to weird tbh and I kind of lost interest.Might have to give them another try at some point .

message 5: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Canistro I was really into this series in the mid 90s. The last set I read was the series with Jake Cutter and Ben Trask. How many have there been since?

message 6: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1680 comments I found a box of books I'd set aside over a decade ago to sell but I'm glad I hadn't sold them as I found the single Brian Lumley book I've read so far in it! It's his Brian Lumley's Mythos Omnibus - which includes his short novels The burrowers beneath, The transition of Titus Crow and The clock of dreams. Although I'd read the whole omnibus back in 1997 or possibly 1998, and enjoyed it, I don't think I felt it to be as good as a work by Lovecraft himself. Since I now have very little recollection of the story maybe I can consider re-reading it and also try to find some of the other omnibus volumes.

Anybody else read the omnibus or the novels it contains?

I found Lumley's Mythos books to be a bit uneven, quality wise.

I liked his NECROSCOPE series, DEMOGORGON and HOUSE OF DOORS.

Yes that might be it too. The impression I have of reading the omnibus 15 or so years later is that it was good but not great. Maybe the fact that I remember so little of the plot should tell me enough not to re-read it. ;)

It's fun going through old boxes and finding unread books or books you'd read and all but forgotten about in them, isn't it? :)

I have that in non-signed form :) it's a nice collection!

A signed copy is nice to have! The book sounds intriguing so I must keep an eye out for it.

G.R. Yeates (gryeates) | 69 comments Love the Necroscope books - a nice cosmic take on the vampire and the cold war. It's a weird kind of nostalgia that comes over me when reading them as the time they were written in was so politically ugly but also evocative when effectively layered into fiction.

message 13: by Nick (new)

Nick (nick1050) | 44 comments Lumley is amazing, when talking about vamps I wish his vision would come up more than the sparkly twilight "blood suckers" of today.

message 14: by Hunter (new)

Hunter Shea | 55 comments It boggle my mind that after all the vampire movies that have been made, Necroscope hasn't been touched. Lumley wrote the best vampire books ever, hands down.

I totally agree. It sorta annoys me that the only vamps that are popular now are the smexy ones. Bleh. I pimp out Necroscope every chance I get.

I've read some of his other stuff, Fruiting Bodies, House of Doors, and haven't been disappointed yet.

Sean (capthowdy) | 0 comments The only problem with a movie version is that the cold war stuff is kind of dated (with the USSR, etc.).

They'd have to do what they've done with the recent James Bond movies and update the cold war stuff with more current event threats.

Loved his Khash series and Khai of Khem!

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments I've always enjoyed Lumley's Necroscope series, but thought the series was a bit overblown...am I off on this? I read the first two trilogies and loved then...started the "Vampyre World" trilogy and kind of fell away after reading the first two...I still have the third (Blood Wars?) and will go back to it...and have the Lost Years books...are they worth a read? All in all, loved the Necroscope concept, his reworking of vampires, very cool stuff...

Jerrod (liquidazrael) | 706 comments Necroscope series is good, I really like the House of Doors/Maze of Worlds set and Kia of Khem was twisted but great. The Titus Crow series is good as well and worth a read.

Started re-reading Necroscope tonight. I've only read 1 through 3 many years ago. I now have them all and plan on going until I finish the series. Looking forward to some Harry Keough!

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments I have only read book 1, but thought it was a very interesting new twist. I wouldn't mind re-reading and moving to additional books in the series. :)

message 22: by Emma (new)

Emma | 10 comments I read the entire Necroscope series up to Lost Years (I just could not get into that one, for whatever reason).

They're pretty pulpy and crazy. One thing I always appreciated is how satisfying the conclusions are; Lumley really knew how to end an adventure story well. Book 5, in particular, has a fantastic finale.

I just started it last night. I'd be up for a Buddy Read, if you're interested.

Great! I just set up a thread in the Buddy Read section, if anyone else would like to join in.

message 27: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) Last summer I read No Sharks In The Med by Lumley. The quality of the stories was very good and I am going to read more of his stuff in the future.

I've read the first three in the series and they seem to get better with each subsequent novel. I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

Brian Lumley is one of my all-time top 3 authors. The majority of his Necroscope books are incredible and he is the best Lovecraft-circle author who added his own personal chapters to the Mythos cycle.

I agree. I don't think he gets the attention he deserves.

message 36: by Terry (new)

Terry | 5364 comments Man, two years later, and I've only read one more book. Sad. I'm going to try to get books 3 and 4 read before summer and make some progress on this series!

I think that every time I almost trip over the box of two dozen library sale books I have and never read.
