Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I really like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While Buffy is film there are many books out related to the TV series. "The Girls Got Bite" by Kathleen Tracy has a synopsis for the first 33 episodes beginng with "Welcome to the Hellmouth". It also has a chapter on the origins of vampire myths and dissucssions of the main characters. "Dracula isn't really magical. It's a bunch of tricks he learned from the gypsies", says Spike.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I forgot to mention online reading. All the classic vampire stories are free online ahttp://www.horrormasters.com/Themes/v... This site has all the classic short stories. There is also Dagon Bites. Both sites have other horror genere as well. Like H.P. Lovecraft,

How about blue bloods, Tanya Huff has one that I know of, but I can't remember the name... Bram Stoker's Dracula... Just type in Vampire in your search bar and you'll find a whole bunch.

I love Vampire Knight! Now the twist where Yuki was actually Kaname's sister was a bit creepy... but good

message 17: by Meagan (new)

Meagan O (flowerpowergrrl13) The Gardella Vampire Chronicles by Colleen Gleason are hot. Also, why not give zombies a shot. Read Generation Dead by Daniel Waters. It may be a YA book but it still is awesome. Also, try Greywalker by Kat Richardson and her series. And the Bride of Casa Dracula books by Marta Acosta. And yeah check out the Sookie Stackhouse books. I just started them and the first one rocks.

message 18: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (aesquibel25) the Gardella Vampire Chronicles was really really good! I loved them. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

message 19: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I dont like vampires books with blood and gore splashed across the pages. It shows a writers inability to write a really clever stories. I like stories with lots of intrige and dark occult magic. The the occasional killing. Anne Rice I like a little bit. I guess I am old school. The old Gothic vampire stories are so much better written. I wish I could find a modern writer that wrote in a similar style.

message 20: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dmfriend26) | 46 comments Cary, I'm going to be a writter after college, and my first book will be about vampires. I'm writing it now. Define occasional killing. So you don't like the paranormal romance? I do, but prefer the gothic vampire stories like Interview with the Vampire and Dracula. I hope to become a great author in the horror genre.

message 21: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments The occasional killing means the vampire goes out and feeds. Occaionally breaks a neck or two. But the vampire attacks themselves are not gorey bloodfests. Matter of fact the heroes in these old time gothic stories can't figure out what is wrong with the victims. They have two bruises where the fang marks have entered the neck. But they are so faint as to not really look much more than slight marks. That is the occult part of the gothic vampire bite. It is not very traceable. If you are wanting to be a great horror writer. You gottah study the works of H.P. Lovecraft. He invented the Cult of Satanic worship as we know it today. He also made up the devils bible called the "Necronomican." For a long time people thought the Necronomican was a real part of folklore. Nope just an ingenious creation of Lovecrafts. His story the "Color From Space" is classic.

message 22: by Dylan (last edited Dec 14, 2008 06:28PM) (new)

Dylan (dmfriend26) | 46 comments O.k., well my stories are kinda like that. Except the vampires dispose of the bodies. The police just think the victims are missing. How's that? I'd love to study up on H.P. Lovecraft. Thanks!

message 23: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments See the disposing of the bodies deal. Your taking the romance out of the Gothic Vampire. The traditional vampire does not generally kill in one feeding and have a dead body on its hands. It gloats over its victim killing it slowly returning again and again. The victimes friends think she has a mysterious illness. This is very much so of Dracula with his attacks on Lucy and Mina. In Carmilla she falls in love sometimes with her victims. She takes just the amount of blood she needs to sustain herself and is very remorseful about having to kill them. Although in life she had a devoted nobleman as a lover. As a vampire she tends to pick women as victims and falls in love with them. I think because it was a man who made her a vampire. It's sophisticated and complicated piece of work. You would have to read it. Like Dracula it is more than a horror story.

message 24: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dmfriend26) | 46 comments Thanks, I'll do that. I'm reading Salem's Lot by Stephen King now. When I have time I'll read Dracula. I'm going to ask for Carmilla for Christmas. Thanks!

message 25: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Dude you are reading Salems lot. I would like to read that one. If it is like the movie it is an OK book. I can't believe you haven't read Dracula or Carmilla. They are classic literature. Like Moby Dick or Oliver Twist or A Christmas Carol. I really liked that movie The Lost Boys. That is my kind of modern vampires. Go online and read Draculas Guest at Horror Masters.com It is a short story that was ommited from the original manuscript of Dracula.

message 26: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dmfriend26) | 46 comments I love The Lost Boys! That's the kind of vampires I like and write about. Salem's Lot is awesome. I'll read Dracula soon, I have it.

message 27: by Cary (last edited Dec 20, 2008 03:56PM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah The Lost Boys was a hip vampire movie. So I am not tottaly Gothic old school,LOL. Kinda funy in places. Like when the brother is floating out side the window trying to get in. But definitly Southern California cool. The vampires all young hip with long hair riding dirt bikes. Hanging out at the seaside amusement park like the one in Del Mar. Now that was a different interesting twist. Not much blood, gore, or violence. Not even any sex just a beautiful mysterious chic that hung with the vamps. So you don't need blood gore and sex for a good vamp movie or book. Just real good imagination. My fave vamp movie fo sho. Well Blade is cool too and mega violent. To bad they took that vampire TV show of the air. The one with Mick Saint James and Beth.

message 28: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Moonlight that was it. It had plenty of violence sex and a body removal specialist vamp. My favorite character was Micks friend and the oldest vamp in LA Josef. Now that was a killer vampire human love story. Beth wanted to be turned for sure.

message 29: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dmfriend26) | 46 comments I know, I loved Moonlight. Why did they take it off the air?

message 30: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments The Hollywood writers strike came at a critical time for Moonlight. It was just getting of the ground. So the people in charge went with shows that had been around longer with a bigger audience. Like "Jericho" was not bad. Dexter the good serial killer was great. They just got shot down by the writers strike. It says on the net that the CW was going to pick up Moonlight but thats an old article and it hasn't happened yet. But because of the HUGE success of Buffy. There will be another vampire show comming along soon I bet. I also bet the vampires are good vamps and named Edward or some such,ROFL.

Natasha | 3 comments I'd go with Laurel K Hamilton or Kim Harrison...or hey you can always check out mine. Anyone who does let me know what you think, but as for the others they're easy reads and I've read them both several times.

message 34: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Read this it is my idea of a good vamp short story from Horror Masters.com I think it is a clever vampire story http://www.horrormasters.com/Text/a05... Campagna is Itlain for countryside. A mystery of the Country side.

message 36: by Fangirl Musings (new)

Fangirl Musings (fangirlmusings) I'd have to recommend Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter seires for the simple fact that it's a totally new and unique twist on the Vampire. Her writing has both the dark horror in her plots and sarcastically dry comedy in several of her characters and scenes. The only author I've come across to mesh the two so easily. Definatly a good series!

message 37: by Dais (new)

Dais | 9 comments hey Stephanie r u asking about the Sookie Stackhouse books.....

message 41: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments What is that cosmic Vampire Movie where the giant bats are in a spaceship hidden in the tail of Haleys comet? The vampires don't drink blood they absorb a victims lifeforce. This is one of those scientifically plausable sources for the vampire myth and the fact that comets portend evil. "Life Force" is the name of this 1985 Brit Film. No blood sucking but the vampires drain energy. A person who has been drained seems to be a shriffled up corpse. Then after several hours the corpse is animated and looking for a fresh victim. Really a great twist on the vampire theme. Cary

message 42: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah life force is a real cool movie. The space vampires travel in the tail of Haleys comet. Which passes earth every 75-76 years amd then passes into the outer solar system and returns again. What makes it return? It must be in the gravitation of the sun in some way. So the space vamps are all dead but three. There asronauts from a shuttle enter the alien craft and there are all these dead giant bats. However there are three left alive. They can assume the form of their victims want to see. They find two good looking naked men and one really foxy black haired chick all enclosed in glass. They awaken and get on the shuttle and kill the astronauts and come down to earth. Great special effects. Cary

message 45: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments The Alpha and Omega of vampire stories is "Carmilla"
as far as I am concerned.

message 46: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (bibliosaurustext) Have any of your read I Am Legend? I didn't see the Will Smith movie, but I read the book a few years ago and still have nightmares to this day...it was that good! The vampires in it are a bit like zombies in that they aren't very intelligent and they only have one thing on their mind: to get the last bit of human blood on the planet.

message 47: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah I want to read "I Am Legend" as well. I loved Charlton Heston in the "Omega Man" which is a hollywood movie inspired by this book. All the people are mutants affected by a virus he has developed a cure for. Just like the Will Smith version he does battle with them each night as they fear daylight.

message 48: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments We don't have hardly any vampire books at our Tulsa library because they all get stolen. Cary

message 49: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Kissing Coffins sounds good. I will see if I can get it on interlibrary loan.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

the sookie stackhouse books are definitely better than the show (although, i confess i am sort of addicted to the show!) also, the blue blood series is good. you might want to check out a series called mortal instruments as well. its not entirely about vampires but i loved it. i've heard good things about the black dagger brotherhood too. its a little more rated R than the others im told (due to sexual content, not blood) but there are 7 or 8 books out i believe. good luck!
