Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I want something really serious and dead on classic. Like, written with the skill of Dracula but in the present day. Not a hard core porn fest with brultal killing. Something like ancient vampire who lives in an English estate with chapel attached. Maybe I should do it myself.

message 52: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Thanks I will check them out. I tihnk I just have an 19th century mindset. I always like stuff from the past. Especially the oldness of the setting gives more credibility to vampire stories. Stories written at a time when people were more likely to believe such things existed.

Eleda (LittleManson) | 1 comments Dylan wrote: "The Vampire chronicles are great! As well as I am Legend and Dracula. "

Hell yeah! They're awesome!

message 54: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I like a lot of the new stuff. I just like the old Gothic 1800's stories better. I just haven't found the right books yet. I love "The Lost Boys". It's a movie but it's about as hip and trendy as vampire stories get. Young Vamps with long hair that ride dirt bikes and live in underground sunken ruins along the sea cliffs in Southern Cali. If that would have been a book I would have totally got off on it.

message 55: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dmfriend26) | 46 comments Cary, read Salem's Lot by Stephen King! It's what Stephen thinks will happen if Dracula came to this century. It's amazing!

message 56: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Super cool I have been wanting to read that for a long time. I got a Stephen King screen play book for the movie Silver Bullet. It was a hard back comic book out lining this werewolf story for the movie. Great werewolf story with the minister as the werewolf it rocked.

message 57: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dmfriend26) | 46 comments I've heard of that. Cycle of the Werewolf right? I've been wanting to read it.

message 58: by Cary (last edited Jan 06, 2009 06:16AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I don't know what Steven Kings original title was. He wrote the screen play for Silver Bullet. They may have derived the movie from Cycle of the Werewolf if it's a Steven King Book. Hollywood always like changing things around. I just remember the most outstanding part of the story was that the were wolf was this little towns minister and pastor at their church.

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 16 comments Everone has given great suggestions! I also like the Tanya Huff Vicki Nelson series

message 60: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (bibliosaurustext) Cary, have you read The Historian? This book actually features Dracula and mixes historical facts of Vlad Tepes' life with the Dracula legend. I loved this book, but it can be a bit long for some people. You might like it, though!

message 61: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I have a friend who is a librarian at the Tulsa County Lib. She ordered me Salems Lot and Blue Bloods. She said Kissing Coffins sounded corny,LOL. What do you think? See just about all vampire stories have the element of romance in them. However I don't like these good guy vampires like Edward they are coming up with. What people are looking for in Edward and Twilight is an odd ball super hero. A vampire spider man. If you believe in the original vampire of Slavic tradition. A vampire is evil plain and simple. Oh The Historian sounds real good. I will get to it. I have allot on my plate now.

message 62: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 16 comments The romantic, sexy vampires seem to be much more popular than the scary evil ones. I like to read both

message 63: by Cary (last edited Jan 08, 2009 07:16AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Well yeah thats true. If you look at the big picture. Vampyre books as a whole are not the most popular with the gerneral public. Especially as far as romance. So for a person like me who is into the old school style. In which the sex and romance are there but in a darker format. As when Dracula who is infautated with Mina after drinking her blood draws line across his bare chest with is finger nail, and has Mina drink from it in return. Making her one with himself. The sex is just dark and Dracula tottaly evil. Dracula has many wifes. However I think he see's in Mina the one woman he really desires. She however ultimately draws him to his doom.

message 64: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments P.S. I like some of the new stuff as well. I liked parts of Twilight even. I think it could have been shortened down allot. My friend who works at the library. Her first comment after reading the first couple chapters, was. "Wow this is way to long",LOL.

message 65: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I wont argue with you about whats good and bad. Twilight is not one of my favortie vampire stories but it has its moments. You probablly feel about Twilight like I do Carmilla. Carmilla has been in print 140 years. So in a way she is a real deal vamp,LOL. Have you read any HP Lovecraft? Like "At the Mountains of Madness". I am reading Salems lot and Blue Bloods now.

message 66: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Right now I am knee deep in books as well. Playing lots of guitar too. So its hard to fit everything in. My bearded dragon is looking at me down the tank and thinking "Cary is so full of it",ROFL

message 67: by Brian (new)

Brian The time is 1920, the place is Moscow. The Devil appears with a retinue including a naked girl vampire with red hair and phosphorescent eyes, and a black cat that smokes cigars and is a dead shot with a Browning automatic...

The book is Mikhail Bulgakov's 'The Master And Margarita', a must read Russian classic.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Need more books and short stories that are not. I reapeat NOT part of a series.

Cary wrote: " Need more books and short stories that are not. I reapeat NOT part of a series. "

message 70: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Thanks I have read all the ones in Penguin. But not Fangoria. I will have to check it out.

message 71: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Thanks Brian I love Browning auto's and so does the Devil,LOL. I have two of em. Man that sounds like a real unusual book.

message 72: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I am going to read Vampire Kisses and see for myself. I am reading Blue Bloods now. Rachel I don't get Dead is the new Black. I see a red door and I wan't it painted black.

message 73: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Oh Dead is the New Black is a book,LOL. No I have not read it. However " Blue Bloods" is pretty good. Its about these kids who are the decendants of vampires who came over on the Mayflower. They are super rich and go to this private school. I dont want to spoil it so I will stop there.

message 74: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I am going to order Vampire Kisses today from the library. What new book has vampires that are out of High School?,LOL.

message 75: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Paint it Black is an old Rolling Stones song from the 60's. I want it painted black, black as night. No longer will my green sea turn a deeper blue. I could not forsee this thing happening to you. Your a vamp lover,LOL.

message 76: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah everbody loves vamps.

message 77: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Everyone likes vampires, posers! LOL. I am going to mary Darla and Drucilla. I will send you an invite Far From Normal. But wait thats wierd being far from normal. Sure you would come,LOL

message 78: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 3 comments Did anyone mention the Vampire Academy series? It's pretty good.

message 79: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 16 comments My friend just mailed me Stakes and Stilettos by Michelle Rowen!!!

message 80: by LovetoRead (new)

LovetoRead (lovestoread08) | 4 comments This is on my To Read List! I can't get enough of vamps lately!!!

message 81: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 3 comments The next House of Night - Hunted - comes out in March!! YEAH!

message 82: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I just finished Blue Bloods. It's an OK vampire book. But it's plot is a little thin. I have Night World order and Kissing Coffins I am going to read to see how goofy it is. None of these books touch short stories. Like Carmilla, Tomb of Sarah, A Tale of the Campagna. The new stuff is all about good vampires in high school. Are their any vampire stories about people not in high school? I mean school is so lame.

message 83: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 3 comments I am reading 13 Bullets and it started out real strong but it's not so great half way through - but it's vampires that are not in high school...if anything - read the first 3 chapters.

message 84: by Cary (last edited Jan 22, 2009 04:51AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments How thoughtful of you all. I have a friend who is a librarian. She already has Kissing Coffins ordered for me and Night World. Blue Bloods was OK but all about way rich high school kids and fashion and getting into trendy clubs. Sthepen Kings Salems lot is just to gross. I liked that movie Underworld. Maybe that was a book before it was a movie.

message 85: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Mo vampire reading thats good. Varney the Vampire is from English Penny Novels. Which are Victorian era comic books. This take from Varney rocks. "The Resurection of a Vampire". Varney is like Lord Ruthven one ruthless vampire. http://www.horrormasters.com/Text/a08...

message 86: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I read allot. Really allot. All kinds of books. So my point is I don't put down a book just because the first chapter is not explosive. I have read everything from Ben Hur to Electric Coolaid Acid Test by Thom Wolf. The Pump House Gang is a great book too. About Cali Surfer kids who live in garages and don't do anything but surf. Bitchin!

message 87: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I got Vampire Kisses 2 Kissing Coffins last night. Looks pretty cool. I am deep into another book so I just had time to kinda of look it over. Welcome to Hipsterville.

message 88: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments No I didn't. I thought Kissing Coffins was the first in the series. Someone said they thought it was the best. Never the less I will go back and read the first one. I am sure I can put it together without the first book for now.

message 89: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I just got my own brand new copy of Carmilla. It is my own personal favorite and I am stoked. I have read it many times and always enjoy reading it again. But first Kissing Coffins 2. Yah!!!!!!!!!!!

message 90: by Jordan (new)

Jordan | 2 comments i absolutly love vampire academy!!! i can't wait until the fourth one comes out. I loveeee dimitri...is it coming out in july or august or september or what?

message 91: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Vampire Academy is it another teenage vampire book? About vampire kids in school. I am so tired of that. I need to find a book about vampires who are at least 21. The only teengage vampire WAF is Carmilla. Where the vampires are real vampires. Not fashion trendy do gooders. I like my vampires evil, fiendish, demonic, and at least 21.

message 92: by Cary (last edited Jan 31, 2009 05:37AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments How funny Carmilla was in her late teens or early 20s and its a great book. Laura is 19 and she desrcribes Carmilla as about her age. So VKisses I did not like. I got Night World, Marked. It is also about teen age vampires in school. I wonder of Vamp Kis,Twilight, and Night World. Which is the copy cat who put the vampires in high school? None of thse books are original. They just saw the sucess of teenage vampires in school and copied each other. Super lame if you ask me. The Vampire Accademy Puke

message 93: by Cary (last edited Jan 31, 2009 10:00AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Well Vampire Kisses is an OK book. Its just for younger readers. That and it is written by an old lady who knows nothing about Goth kids. Right now I am reading. House of Night "Marked" It was written by a Mom and her teenage daughter in colaboration. Her daughter hipped her Mom as to how teenage kids really think. So it's not a bad book.

message 94: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments From her picture on the sleve she looks like a houswife,LOL. She has been an actress and stand up comedian. http://www.ellenschreiber.com/home.htm Check out her outfit.

message 95: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yah I would agree with you on that. I really want to read books that are not series books. Have adults or kids who are not in school. But mainly I want the vampires to be evil but interesting, self centered dangerous killers who have lived centuries and long for the night and the hunt for blood and sex and lust.

message 96: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I read to the end of Kissing Coffins. Luna the born human vampire has been turned and is after some human dude. Raven and Alexander are out to stop him. Jaeger is real pleased with himself. One question. How do vampires bear human children like Luna? They are the undead. How does Alexander have a heart beat. I read carefully and pay attention to detail.

message 97: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments If I get a chance I will check it out. All these vimpire books are hard to get. I have to get all of them from interlibrary loan. That author sure knows how to cash in. She has a goth cartoon website and the whole deal. Heroutfit is kind of sissy goth however,LOL.

message 98: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah vampire movies are easier. I loved Underworld and Blade. Those are the kind of books I'm looking for.

message 99: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessfraga) | 1 comments I am reading the Anita Blake series. I have to admit I wasn't crazy about the first couple books - but I am hooked now (on book 14). Each book gets better and better.

I also LOVED the House of Night Series and the Vampire Academy series. Anita Blake series is much more mature - it depends on what you are looking for. I hear the Sookie Stackhouse series is really good.

message 100: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments What on earth is Betryed? Another House of Night book? From the young adult section of the library,LOL
