anybody involved in any extracurricular activities? Sports teams? Clubs? etc.

I'm involved in SIFE on my campus (Students in Free Enterprise). We do a lot of volunteer stuff and help a lot of businesses. I also do some intramural sports..soccer & ultimate frisbee.

message 2: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Does babysitting my grandfather and my dog count....lol

message 3: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments I sing in an all woman chorus every Wednesday. No sports for me because I am way too awkward.

message 4: by Janet (new)

Janet I am not involved in much. I am involved in Mortar Board, the senior national honor society. It's a lot of fun because we do a lot of volunteer work around the community. I am the same with sports. I used to play but I think if I tried to now, I would fail! Haha.

message 5: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I'm not involved in much either. I don't recommend going to school full time and working full time. It leaves you with absolutely no free time. I'm in the Deaf Studies Association, so I try to get to those meetings when I can.

message 6: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments i don't do much at school. I'm always in the library I feel like!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
haha that should be an extracurricular in its self.

message 8: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments i know seriously!

message 9: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (kelseynicole) ah i wouldnt call mine extracurricular..really just my hobbies!! Riding horses, Hunting and fishing, reading and writing..and i think that is about it!! lol

message 10: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments I've always wanted to ride a horse!!

message 11: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (kelseynicole) Really? You never have? Well if you ever get the chance you should definately do it! Its is one of the best feelings you will ever have!!

message 12: by Janet (new)

Janet Oh my God. I don't mean to sound like a complete loser but I am so afraid of horses. I used to go to summer camp all the time when I was a kid and we had to ride horses and I had a bad experience just about every time! They're beautiful animals but they scare me haha!

message 13: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
haha one of my best friends is the same exact way. We always make fun of him for his fear in horses..unlike you, I dont think he has a real reason to be afraid of them..he just is!

message 14: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (kelseynicole) Aw bad experiences on horses do tend to scar people. but the saying is true..if you fall off get right back on. It is honestly the only way to get over your fear. I have never been thrown lucky me, but TJ has tried bucking me off a couple of times. We butt heads alot i think. haha

message 15: by Bree (new)

Bree (breezybaby) | 144 comments I play tennis for my school! and I am also in SIFE, Jamie. sometimes I play on intramural teams..depending on how much time i have.

message 16: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Yay for SIFE Bree! i wish i would have joined it earlier. you learn so much and plus there is great networking potential.

message 17: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I am so busy with extracurriculars, particularly this year. Ever since high school, I've just been one of those "joiners" always joining everything. Sometimes I feel like Max from Rushmore! haha. I think Jamie will get that reference.

This year: Student Government Association officer (Representative to the Board of Trustees, so besides SGA general assemby meetings, officer meetings, and sponsored events I also have committee meetings to attend several times a semester.)
NSSLHA treasurer (National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association)
Alpha Chi and Delta Epsilon Sigma president (honors clubs)
campus ministry stuff
I also tutor for Student Support Services (English and Anatomy for Speech Pathology and I'm also down to tutor Theology although I don't have any students currently) and do workstudy at the STARS (Success Track for Adults Returning to School) program in Admissions.

I was an orientation leader during orientation and often sit on the judicial council and fill in for the chairperson when needed. I used to be in Honors Program and Choir too. I'm thinking about writing for the school paper too. They keep asking me and I keep turning them down. I feel too busy but it's one more thing to put on the grad school application! and I would probably enjoy it somewhat.

They wrote an article about me in our school paper talking about my involvement and random stuff about me (It's called Freak of the Week. It's cool to be Freak of the Week. haha) and I heard they are going to run it in the quarterly school magazine, too, which is mostly read by alumni.

Classes are probably the smallest aspect of my college experience! haha.

message 18: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) In high school, I was pretty involved in extracurriculars, but once I got to college I spent most of my time on schoolwork and with friends. I did play intramural softball & dodgeball (that was AWFUL. everyone was so competitive and I was terrible at it. I used to get hit in the head a lot, haha) and I'm also a member of Lambda Pi Eta (Communications Honor Society).

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
wow Lynn..first of all..you are my new favorite person for comparing yourself to Max from Rushmore :) now i'm really in the mood to watch that movie tonight! haha

second of all..holy hell girl! how do you have time for anything?? do you sleep?? wow! I feel like a lazy bum!

message 20: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Lynn: Holy hell! How do you fit everything into your schedule? That's completely amazing!

message 21: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Heather, I completely sympathize w/ the sports thing. I haven't played sports since elementary school and I was never really good at any of them but I wanted to take racquetball as a class at school so I did and I quit after the first day. The instructor made me cry (but I held it in until after class). I was sooo terrible and everyone else was good and laughing at me. Even the instructor was laughing (he is a complete ass). Why can't people just do things for fun like when we were kids??

Jamie, I also have trouble falling asleep. haha. so that's even less time for sleeping ;]

my days are frequently extremely busy. I have a few free blocks of time every now and then and I usually hang out around campus and chat with people (the education dept is a good place to go). And I don't do everything that I listed everyday, so it's not as bad as it sounds.

Lately I've been wondering if I join so much b/c I'm just trying to run away from my feelings. I can't feel sad or lonely or whatever if I'm busy. But if I think about it too much I will definitely get depressed and start second guessing my whole life.

I was less busy my first two years. This has def been the busiest. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so involved. I wish I could just lay around and read or watch a movie or something. I guess that's why I'm really excited for winter break.. a whole month of NOTHING!! :]

PS. Jamie, my absolute, hands down, favorite is The Royal Tenenbaums! But they're all amazing in their own ways. The only one I haven't seen yet is Bottlerocket. No one in my family understands his movies and they don't understand my obsession. And I really can't explain it either.

message 22: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
I used to try and be really busy when I didn't want to face things that were going on with my mom when she was sick..and then i took a drastic turn right after she died..i lost interest in everything. Now I think I'm at a healthy medium. anyways..sounds like you need a well deserved break Lynn!! Good luck finishing up! The end is in sight!

ahh the Royal Tennanbaums..definitely a favorite. I love Margot. haha.

message 23: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) | 71 comments I've been involved with my course union, History Students' Association, since my third year. Met some really wonderful people through the course union who are just as passionate about history and helping out in the department. I'm also on the editorial committee for the undergraduate history journal that we publish every year.

I used to write for my college newspaper as well but I stopped last year because things were picking up (there's no way I could've continued nowadays, especially as my responsibilities in the course union and with the journal have tripled since third year xD).

message 24: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 130 comments Freshman council, chamber ensemble, various research jobs (ACP/ACS, biophysics department, economics/international affairs, track and field, etc.

I was originally supposed to play baseball for the varsity team, but I had to get surgery in early September. That eliminated my chance to play this season... It really sucks.

message 25: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
That does suck Matthew. Do you think you will be able to play next season?

message 26: by Matthieu (last edited Feb 16, 2009 09:47PM) (new)

Matthieu | 130 comments Yeah, definitely. Theoretically, I could be ready come spring, but why take an unnecessary risk?

Thanks for asking, Tami.

message 27: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I love baseball. I know a lot of people see it as boring, but I can watch any time, any where, any one. (well there are a few teams that I have to cheer against) but I hate it when an injury takes people out especially when it is for a long time and when you can tell the player really lives for the game.

message 28: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I was really involved in everything in high school.. like every club and ran for senior class president & all that.

College... ugh a totally different story. I guess since I work I don't get involved in stuff around campus. Literally... I'm in no clubs, no sports, nothing. I tried going to our "writing" club once & it was a diaster. I posted about it a while back I think.... remember the guy who I thought was putting spells on me with his eyes? Yup... it was that story. Haha. I played volleyball for 2 years in high school & loved it. We all sucked, so we just had fun.

message 29: by Nuri (last edited Feb 20, 2009 11:24PM) (new)

Nuri (nools) | 145 comments I know what you mean, Lauren. Compared to high school, I'm such a slacker these days!

I've never been much of an organized sports person (i.e. high school teams), though I love to PLAY (I think running around with a lot of other people is so much fun... then again, I think almost anything with a lot of other people is fun). I'd do intramural if I had more time, I think.

As for me... Um. I'm pretty involved in the Christian community at Berkeley (I used to be committed 5 nights a week), serving as leadership in some of the campus-affiliated groups. I've also worked with the a campus journal. (Check it out if you have time!: To An Unknown God www.unknowngodjournal.com)

Then I mostly volunteer: Writer's Coach Connection (working on writing/English with middle-schoolers at a local school), Suitcase Clinic (providing medical/legal/social services for the homeless). I'd REALLY like to find a research position again soon, but I've been so lazy about that.

Matt: Sorry to hear about the surgery!! I hope it wasn't too serious? (Is that a stupid/insensitive question to ask about surgery...? :/)

message 30: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 130 comments Haha, don't worry about it. I had bone chips removed from my elbow, and a procedure to mend a frayed rotator cuff. It wasn't terribly serious.

I just miss playing...

Thanks for asking, Nools!

message 31: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I did colorguard (the people with flags that hang out with the marching band) at SDSU. I started a winterguard season but had to move in the middle of it. I age out in two months so I'm thinking about teaching at one of the high schools here.

message 32: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I really want to get involved in something because it's my last year of college and even though I don't like where I'm going, I feel like I've cheated myself out of something. I'm president of the English club, but no one wants to be involved and it is nearly impossible to plan something that people will come to. I go to a Bible study and dinner 1 night a week at a local church and I really enjoy that. But I want to do something else.

I think my big problem is that when I get the time, I really just want to spend a few hours reading as a way of escaping.

Anyone else have this problem?

message 33: by Shelly (new)

Shelly | 13 comments in my high school, life is so boring. i didn't take any activities. instead, i engage myself in my study in order to be accepted by a good university.
now in my college school, i spend much time taking part in activities. i am a volunteer of museum. i love to be a guide there. everytime i share what i know with others, i feel very content.
i am also a member of AIESEC. It also takes much time of mine.

message 34: by Jess (new)

Jess Lori, I'm a bit of the opposite. I love reading, but during the school year it takes the back burner to activities. Last year I was co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Undergraduate Research, among other things. This year I sit on the Student Leadership Advisory Board and will be president of 'R World 'R Vote, a political awareness organization on campus. I need to try to fit in reading!

message 35: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) These days, I play Ultimate frisbee every Saturday morning with my friends. I used to be on the Ballroom Dance Company and the International Folkdance Ensemble when I was an undergrad at BYU. Now that I just work there, I still take the odd dance class after five, but I've retired from competing. I'm thinking of getting back into Musical Theater.
In my school days, I played every sport (football, volleyball, basketball, track, cross country, badminton) and did theater... until everyone grew except me. I was 85 lbs. from grades 6-11, so I just did theater, gymnastics, student council, ballroom, jazz band, choir, and other bands. In grade 12, I did cheer for a year as a tumbler when I moved to the states.
I also played hockey every day after school for years, but never on an official team.

message 36: by David (new)

David (canadiandave) Amanda wrote: "Since I do my schooling through distance education, there aren't any programs for me to join. However, I did play soccer when I was younger for 8 years. Too bad I'm too old to play on the junior te..."

~Which distance ed. program did you do? My sister did one and there are tons of people who were doing distance ed. or half and half where I grew up.

What extracurricular activities is everyone planning on doing this semester?

I definitely wish that I had been more involved. I regret that now for sure.

message 38: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I'll be:
- orientation leader (second year)
- student ambassador (first official year - I felt like an unofficial one last year. haha)
- president of N'tl Student Speech, Language, and Hearing Associatoin (first year as prez, fourth year in club)
- SGA Rep to the Board of Trustees (second year)
- peer tutor (second year)
- Alpha Chi (second year)
- Delta Epsilon Sigma (third year?)
- campus ministry stuff (fourth year)

I wish I had more free time :/

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Wow Lynn!! You remind me of a good friend of mine. He was involved in EVERYTHING! His calender/planner cracked me up because it literally had NO free time. He had to pencil free time in if you wanted to do lunch with him. and I'll never forget watching him dash from one meeting to something else all the way across campus.

Sounds pretty awesome though! I bet you have met so many different kinds of people through all of those activities!

message 40: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Actually I don't meet as many people as you might think... just b/c it seems like the same few people are involved in everythingn on campus! I thought just our school was that way (b/c we're really small) but I went to a leadership conference this summer in TX and a guy from a big school said they have the exact same problem.

I do do a lot of running about haha. I wish I was more organized. I rarely use my planner. I usually program reminders in my phone and so my phone is always going off with these songs and people are like "someone's calling you" and I'm like "Nope, it's a reminder. haha

Wasn't sure if this post should go here or several other places so this one won out.

I talked once with our HR person here at work, and he mentioned how much these extracurriculars help in real life. We do most of our promotion through business clubs a few select schools.

So for those looking to start work as soon as you are done with school, join any club that may be related to your field of choice. Also other clubs that may not be directly related, even fraternities or sororities, because if you are involved enough, are on any type of club council, etc, this shows prospective employers people skills, organization skills, and gives you contacts/references.

message 42: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I def agree with Tami! I think being involved really gives you an edge for scholarships/job market/grad school. And it's like a snowball effect... at first I was just involved in one or two things and those both led to two more things, etc.

message 43: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (doublen) -President of the Women's Center Club
-Vice-President of VOX: Voices For Planned Parenthood (I'll be President next semester)

You are super busy Jenn!! Sounds like alot of really interesting extracurriculars!

message 45: by Narnies (new)

Narnies I love trying new things and if im not reading and it's a fine day then i like being active.

I'm a big fan of group fitness classes and am going to take my first RPM or spin class tonight, I'm slightly terrified. But im going to do it! I love the happy rush you get after a hard class, especially when you accomplished something you weren't sure you could do before hand.

Next year i want to do the Oxfam Trailwalker around Lake Taupo, but have so far failed to find anyone else to do it with. You have a team of 4 people and everyone has to start and finish, and you have to run/jog or walk 100km within 36 hours.

Anyone keen????? That lives in New Zealand???

message 46: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (leviathan_) I've been treasurer for the Student's Council from January to June (after which I had to quit for a time-consuming health issue that didn't let me dedicate to it as I wanted to), and I'm hopefully taking up Swedish lessons soon.

message 47: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I'm pretty busy with classes, but I still like to be involved on campus.

Swing Dance Society (not very active, but I go when I can)
Marching band (I count it because it took so much time, but I graduate in May, so I'm done with it now)
Tau Beta Sigma (marching band service sorority)
Courtside Players (basketball band)
SING Alliance (Go to http://tinyurl.com/yjqz55w if you want to attempt to find out what this is, but the most important part is that it takes up all my time for the first 7 weeks of the Spring semester)

Add to this my 19 hours of class and concert band (auditing) and I may go crazy, but as long as I graduate it'll be ok.

message 48: by Hyemi (new)

Hyemi | 9 comments I'm a pre-K sunday school teacher & a keyboard player in my church band. We play more modern music like Jeremy Camp and David Crowder. Fun stuff!

Also, I'm about to volunteer at a local hospital in the food area since I'm pursuing a degree in Nutrition & Dietetics program.
