Amanda D. (tinyminx) A question that never occurred to me.

Do the books have to also be along the theme of being part of a series in the UF or PNR genre or as long as they're on the selected shelf, they're free game?

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Amanda - found this on the Q & A Page:

Q: Are re-reads allowed?
A: Re-reads are not preferred, but are allowed.

Q: You can choose any book on the shelf? You're not limited to the first x number of pages?
A: Yes. Any book listed on the shelf that is posted each week will be allowed. There is no limit on which page # (of the shelf list) books must be found.

Q: Do all the books have to be part of a series?
A: Since our group focus is on PNR & UF series reads, I'd prefer to keep it to books of that nature, but it's not a requirement.

AH | 2271 comments I don't know - The Giving Tree - a kid's book with <50 pages was on that list. Hardly seems fair to choose that.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Yeah - I hear you! Don't know if there is a minimum # of pages. Didn't read that far in the thread. Guess I could put all my grandson's Dr. Suess books in as "speculative fiction"....and "alternate worlds". LOL

message 456: by AH (new)

AH | 2271 comments I mean, you can write a fairly long review of the Giving Tree but it's just not right.

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments You guys are psychic. We were just talking about a rule for a minimum amount of pages. Or I should say that I suggested such a rule. :) I guess I would hope no one would read a 50 page picture book, even if it's on the shelf, but you start getting into questionable land when you're talking about under 200 page novellas.

I myself think that maybe we should have a rule, especially for CC4, since that one's so much more about speed than Bingo is. It just takes the guesswork out of that middle ground, kwim? Then everyone has to read a book, not a novella or short story.

But I'm also an anal control freak who has an overactive "fair" compulsion and likes rules, so bear that in mind. ;)

message 458: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I love rules! :)

message 459: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Regina wrote: "I love rules! :)"

I think that's one of the reasons you & I love post-apocalyptic stuff. How do people act/react when there are no rules? That's when you really separate the wheat from the chaff--when there are no legal rules anymore, who also stops following the societal & moral rules? When there are no legal ramifications, who still does the "right thing"?

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments All I can say is - it wouldn't be my ex.... Only 1 of the reasons we aren't together.

I have that "overactive 'fair' compulsion" too. Don't mean to stir things up or cause problems....and I love the dystopian, post-apocalyptic stuff too!

message 461: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Where The Wild Things Are is on the list.

I got lucky and the book I really wanted to read next was on the 4 stars list.

message 462: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Ahh, very interesting Laura.

I am reading Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro it was on the 4 star shelf and is dystopia - you all think this is okay?

message 463: by Amanda (new)

Amanda D. (tinyminx) Thank you, Cindy!

That's fine Regina :)

message 465: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Thanks. :)

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Well - I have heard there are folks out there who do Master's thesis' on books like Harold and the Purple Crayon, but IMO that really isn't "right" either. It's a small child's book! Don't know if the author was trying to make some huge world-shattering statement when they wrote the book or not. But I would guess they were just trying to amuse a toddler!

message 467: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Laura, thanks for mentioning the minimum page requirement. If you could post that here for all to see, that'd be great.

Also, I just wanted to remind everyone that you must include the following information for your read to count towards your team's stamp:

(1) Date finished

-- We are all in different time zones, so a date works best for me since my "today" is your "tomorrow"
(2) 1-5★ rating
(3) Some sort of review
-- You can post something long or short; pls include whether you liked it, if it's a series whether or not you'll continue, etc.
-- You are not required to post your review on the book page (example: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...), but if you do, you are welcome to share a link.
-- That being said, you will need to write something on your team thread to count as your review, posting your review link alone doesn't qualify.

Thanks! If you have any questions which were not addressed on the Q&A thread or this discussion thread, please feel free to ask! Hope everyone has a great week/end!

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Just one question......is it Sunday yet?????

message 469: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Nope, it's only Friday in Aus & Jpn. LOL. As not every team has read their books yet, probably won't get an early shelf either.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments I know.....

message 471: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments Steph, I have a question/clarification. Let's say I have a book that matches a shelf announced. But if I have already started reading the book, then can it be counted as fulfilling the challenge or only books that were started after the shelf announcement will be counted?

message 472: by Laura Lulu (last edited Jul 29, 2011 07:52PM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Vi, it has to be started after the shelf is announced.

That's why everyone is always nervous about starting another book a few days before the new shelf is called--you just know it will be on the new shelf. So you wait, and then of course it's not on the new shelf. ;)

message 473: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments LOL, Exactly!

message 474: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments Great, ladies. Now I'm nervous 'cos I was thinking of starting not one but two books..

message 475: by Laura Lulu (last edited Jul 29, 2011 07:53PM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Lol!

message 476: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I have more than 1 for each possible shelf so I decided just to read what I want and worry about the shelf when it's posted. Unless I finish a book right before the shelf is due. Then I might wait to start a new one.

message 477: by AH (new)

AH | 2271 comments It's also a good time to pull out one of those chubby chunkster books and read a few chapters while you're waiting. Game of Thrones, anyone?

message 478: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments AH, that is exactly what I'm doing. I have a looot of fantasy and likely SF books that I just haven't picked up. So I decided to read Kushiel's Avatar coming in at 750+ pages. Of course, me just finishing the previous book in the trilogy has nothing to do with it.

Mary, I love that you are so organized. Somehow, that doesn't work for me :(

message 479: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I completely disorganized in the rest of my life if that makes you feel any better.

message 480: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments It's petty of me but yes, I feel better. The perfect person does not exist :D

message 481: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Since I just finished a book this morning, I am watching MASH reruns while I do housework.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments I'm hoping to finish up the book I'm on today. I've got less than 100 pages left, so it shouldn't be a problem. Since I still have 3 books to read for the LGBTQ box on PBS, I'll probably start A Strong Hand next. No PnR or UF elements in that one, so doubt it will fit into any of the shelves.

message 483: by Cee (new)

Cee | 180 comments With shelves like "4 stars" and "favorite series" you won't need paranormal elements (: You just have to get lucky to get the right shelf.

message 484: by AH (new)

AH | 2271 comments Yup. I was bummed thinking I could start my Dexter book and it wouldn't be on the list. There it was under favorite series and I had already started it. Darn! Great book, by the way.

message 485: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Is it? I was just looking at the Dexter books, but the reviews seem very mixed.

message 486: by AH (new)

AH | 2271 comments I just finished Dexter is Delicious. I think it follows the show - Dexter is a new daddy but to a baby girl. I enjoyed it. Haven't looked at any reviews. I've only read this one and the first one - haven't found the others at the library.

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Cindy (eclecticfirefly) wrote: "Since I still have 3 books to read for the LGBTQ box on PBS"

Cindy, have you read any of the PsyCop books? They were my first foray into m/m and I love them to pieces. Highly recommend them.

Among the Living (PsyCop, #1) by Jordan Castillo Price Criss Cross (PsyCop, #2) by Jordan Castillo Price Body and Soul (PsyCop, #3) by Jordan Castillo Price Secrets (PsyCop, #4) by Jordan Castillo Price Camp Hell (PsyCop, #5) by Jordan Castillo Price GhosTV (PsyCop, #6) by Jordan Castillo Price

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments I've read Partners, it has the first 2 books in it. I have Camp Hell TBR, but I still need to get books 3 & 4. Loved the first 2!

message 489: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments They get better and better. I was sad after I finished GhosTV, I just love the characters so much, I wanted more. Write faster! Lol.

message 490: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I love the psycops series. Laura have you tried her other series yet? I have not but am tempted.

So waiting for Sunday! LOL. I will be here starting Saturday for 7 days, can't wait to just sit on the beach and read:

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments I just found my copy of Property when I was cleaning and rearranging my books last night! It's the one with stories #3 & #4! WHOO HOO!!!!!

Just love it when I find the books I've been wanting - and they are ALREADY IN MY HOUSE!

At least I found it before I ordered another copy from Amazon......

message 492: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Looks awesome, Regina! Enjoy your holiday, you deserve it!

LOL Cindy!

message 493: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I bought 2 books yesterday at Borders GOB sale thinking they were on my PBS WL. But I already have them.

message 494: by AH (new)

AH | 2271 comments Regina, that looks lovely. Enjoy your vacation.

message 495: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Thank you! I am so looking forward to it. Only downside -- my inlaws who are visiting for 5 weeks will be there and my sister and her kids backed out at the last minute. But I don't care, I just want to sit and relax and read. :) Maybe see some wolves and black bears.

message 496: by AH (new)

AH | 2271 comments Do you have any werewolf or werebear books to read? Think of the atmosphere, lol.

message 497: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Ha! Great idea. I have a dragon shift book to read. :) I may be reading a scary ghost story too.

message 498: by Laura Lulu (last edited Aug 05, 2011 10:11AM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments That looks awesome, Regina. I remember you saying it was a big pond, not a lake--is it private? As in, that whole big swimming pond is just for you guys? If so, how awesome! If not, still awesome. :)

Here's where I'll be for the next week. Yours looks a bit more relaxing than mine will be. ;)

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Mary - that happens to me all the time. I swear the only reason I even would consider getting a cell phone is to keep track of my TBR.....

Great vacations ladies! Mine is almost over. I just stayed home and read! Relaxing and cheap.

message 500: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments I do that too Mary, so frustrating!

Love the idea of a holiday, let alone the places you've both picked. Cindy totally understand the stay at home hol, that's usually what we do too.
