KrisT | 553 comments I am reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins...really good so far. It is a YA book and a gal from another group I am in recommended it. I see others have it on their lists here too.

Cathy | 51 comments Has anyone read The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich?

message 305: by Kathy (last edited Dec 11, 2008 08:48AM) (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 111 comments I'm reading Company of Liars Company of Liars by Karen Maitland It takes place in 1348 in England and is somewhat of a Canterbury Tales set up. (I love The Canterbury Tales.) As a bonus, and in keeping with the historical setting of that time, the Black Death is a part of the story. The Plague is a favorite subject of mine, too, both the 1300's one and the 1600's one. Norman Cantor has an excellent non-fiction book out called In the Wake of the Plague, one of my favorite non-fiction reads. Of course, I try to find fiction books that deal with the plague, too. A couple of favorites are Doomsday Book by Connie Willis and Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks.

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 305 comments I just finished The Restaurant at the End of the Universe and I'm over half way through It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken. This one is just a humorous look at some stark realities from the authors of He's Just Not that Into You...

message 307: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments just finished Pride and Prejudice, and an ARC (Miles from Nowhere).

message 308: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Hickman (bkread2) | 233 comments Oh Teri I have read "Murder at the Bad Girl's Bar and Gril"l by N.M.Kelby and absolutely loved it! I would definitely read something else by Kelby anytime!! I might have to check out the contest!

message 309: by Amy (new)

Amy | 1 comments I'm reading Elegance of the Hedgehog.
:)

message 310: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 305 comments Finished It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken and am now moving ahead with The Silver Pigs. It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken was pretty good, it served more as a collection of positive thoughts and crazy anecdotes than anything else. The information given was pretty standard but done in a humorous way which was nice.

The Silver Pigs is the first of the Marcus Didius Falco mysteries by Lindsey Davis. Its set in ancient Rome and I've heard great things about it!

message 312: by Thauna (last edited Dec 12, 2008 09:38AM) (new)

Thauna Sonja, my middle read It's Called a Breakup cause it's Broken a couple years ago...it is the ONLY book that girl has ever read! It really helped her through a breakup and she just told me that she's reading it again to help get over the last bad boyfriend who is unfortunately the baby's daddy. I hope it helps as much as it did the first time she read it, she really needs to get over that jerk! She followed all the advice and loved the book.

message 313: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 305 comments Thauna, I can totally see how the book would be VERY useful to someone having trouble getting over a relationship and I think it might have helped me get out of this last one had I read it earlier... That being said, it really just enforced what I was already doing now to stay away from that selfish jerk I used to date. (I haven't had the urge to speak to him or know what he's doing or beg him to take me back... etc etc.)

I hope this book continues to help your sister and she realizes that she is way too much of a superfox to let anyone walk all over her! (Superfox is commonly used in the book; it is not something I say on a regular basis... that is all.)

I loved the Red Tent. It was one of the first books recommended to me by CoL. I just loved it. Another one of those books about a strong determined woman.

message 318: by [deleted user] (new)

Cindy,
I am about 40 pages into it, so far it is very interesting!

Well keep you updated!

I just started The Forever War. Pretty good so far.

message 320: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) Finally finished the second book in the Blue Bloods series (Masquerade)... I think being many moons away from my teens kept the book from sweeping me away-- the suspense finally built at the end... but a little too late.

I have just devoured the first half of The Thirteenth Tale... love it! Not sure where it's going and I'm fighting the urge to peek at the back, but I'm rushing through family brunch so I can fit some more reading time in today. Great January pick!

message 321: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) Heidi, I've just finished The Thirteenth Tale! I absolutely adored every word of it! Don't peek!!!

message 325: by Mary (new)

Mary Crabtree (boonebridgebookscom) | 88 comments I'm waiting for someone to start a Cold Mountain thread because I didn't like it ....Whooshhh..... that was a shoe that someone just threw at me!

On a happy note, I'm reading "The Sound of Butterflies" by Rachel King and I'm really liking it.

message 326: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 305 comments Ashley: What do you think of Nefertiti? I wanted to read it so im interested in what people think about it...

Reading The Silver Pigs and I'm almost done. Really liking the fact that the main character has a personality that really comes through... and hes kinda quirky.

message 327: by KrisT (new)

KrisT | 553 comments Oh Mary, Let me know what you think of Sound of Butterflies. It was suggested to me and my library doesn't have it so I was going to ILL it if it any one I knew had read it. I have to say Cold mountain was long. I did like some of it but (ducking from more shoes) I have to say I liked the movie of it almost better. :)

message 328: by Robyn (last edited Dec 19, 2008 07:46AM) (new)

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 354 comments I'm reading The Book of Lies by Brad Meltzer. But I'm only a quarter of the way through and have to return it to the library, today!! I can't renew it because there are a ton of holds on the book. Damn 14-day books! It wasn't enough!!

The Forever War

message 330: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Oh Mary, I am so sorry that you didn't like Cold Mountain. I just loved the book. Then I listened to it on audio, and it is read by the author, it is amazing. But I did not like the movie at all.

message 331: by Mary (new)

Mary Crabtree (boonebridgebookscom) | 88 comments LesT - The Sound of Butterflies is so good that I've been waking up in the middle of the night and forcing myself awake to read it! I'm only half way through and will finish this weekend. I'll let you know when i finish if this is a "highly recommend"

Now about Cold Mountain....I know Meg :(...I expected to like it because everyone that recommended it to me shared my taste in books. There was something very unsatisfying about the book. Also as a "journey book" it just didn't create characters that I cared enough about and I got completely restless reading it....I know this was a first time novel and it felt like it to me. It felt contrived - so absolutely it didn't work for me as "the presence" of the author and his writing process intruded on the story line. It's been some years since I've read it but these impressions are what have stayed with me. I know I'm in the minority.

Heather (andshewontsleep) | 19 comments I've been reading Marley Me for the few days and loving it. I just started Breaking Dawn tonight. I hate to say that I'm kind of getting bored with the Twilight series and will be glad when I can move on.

message 333: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 111 comments I've started The Absolutely True Story of a Part-time Indian, a YA book that I've been meaning to read. I am going to read a mystery next. I just need a mystery fix.

message 334: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 3 comments Just over halfway through Eclipse. I love this series....I wish it came out when i was a teenager...still find myself enjoying very much though even if I am an old Mom. When I was a teenager I was readin VC Andrews.

message 335: by [deleted user] (new)

I just bought War and Peace and Barefoot!

I am going to read Barefoot now then finish The Red Tent... I need something easy at the moment!

message 336: by Heidi (last edited Dec 20, 2008 03:16PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihetzel-evans) Last Sunday (since then... swept up in Christmas stuff and caught a bad cold-- my books are collecting dust)I read the first Sookie Stackhouse book-- Dead Until Dark ... at first I wasn't sure, but I really had a blast reading it and finished it in one evening... overall, it was just a fun book (although the bodies really piled up).

Now I don't know what to pick... couldn't get into The Life of Bees (there's another shoe winging its way thru cyberspace)... think I'll just wait until I pick up Edgar Sawtelle at the library tomorrow.

message 337: by Holli (last edited Dec 21, 2008 06:07AM) (new)

Holli I can't get into Edgar Sawtelle....I'm tryin' though!! :)

Heidi......we missed you yesterday! But thank you for thinking of us in regards to your cold. Are you feeling a little better today? We didn't see Australia (we saw Four Christmases instead) so we can still go see it and if we have to wait until it comes out on DVD then I'll have a Hugh Jackman party at my house and we'll watch it here!! ;)

message 338: by [deleted user] (new)

Holli..
I saw Four Christmases yesterday as well.. what did you think of it?

message 339: by Holli (last edited Dec 21, 2008 06:40AM) (new)

Holli I thought it was hysterically funny...I loved it. I really enjoy Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon both though so I had a great time.

message 340: by [deleted user] (new)

I really liked it too.. there were a couple of parts where I swear it was just me and the lady sitting behind me laughing!

My DH fell asleep!

Strange there was a single guy in his late 20's early 30's sitting next to me, he was by himself he tought it was pretty funny!

message 341: by Holli (new)

Holli How funny! I'm glad you liked it........I loved it. I thought it was a perfect comedic Christmas movie. Totally epitomized familes and how weird they are.

message 342: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments I Know This Much Is True ---> OH MY GAWD is this book good!

message 343: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Holli, keep at it, it is definitely worth it. I had to talk my mother through the beginning but she got hooked. I agree with Teri that it is very well written.

Mary, I think one of the reasons that I loved Cold MOuntain was that I read it when it first came out and had no expectations. Do you think if you read something that so many people rave about that you get disappointed because your expectations are so high? I think that has happened to me quite a few times.

Holli, I love Hugh Jackman.

message 344: by Dolly (new)

Dolly (dollya) I am currently reading the CoL January read, "The Thirteenth Tale". It is really good so far, I'm about 1/2 way through.

This group picks the best books and I'm glad to be a part of it.

message 345: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah7299) | 303 comments Hugh Jackman party, Holli?? I so wish I could be there for that one! :)

message 346: by Mary (new)

Mary Crabtree (boonebridgebookscom) | 88 comments Meg - good point on Cold Mountain. You are right...everyone was buying that book and it was the big deal with so many people. I do tend to avoid reading those books that get on the Oprah list (unless they're a classic). Choosing what to read can be so personal and variable. Choices tend to be heavily influenced by my mood, my life, the economy, politics, or as simple as reading a fabulous review.
I particularly am drawn to "the book I haven't heard talked about by everyone". It's like looking for perfect sea shells in the surf.

message 347: by Holli (new)

Holli If I could I would invite you ALL over for a Hugh Jackman party!! Wouldn't that be fun??

Teri, I have heard that Australia has gorgeous "scenery" but the story itself was kinda just all right. I'll still watch it though.

I'm going to keep at it with Edgar Sawtelle. I'm having a hard time thru this beginning part. When does it start to pick up?

message 348: by Kathy (new)
