message 351: by Dolly (new)

Dolly (dollya) I also just finished "The Thirteenth Tale". That was an excellent pick for January.

I just started "The Shack" last night.

message 352: by Holli (new)

Holli Dolly, let me know what you think about The Shack. I loved that one.

I just started Edgar Sawtelle and its starting to hook me. I sorta like it......it just starts out so sloow. I'm having to adjust my mind around that.

message 353: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments liz- i'm liking it a lot so far. 207 pages in.

message 354: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 111 comments Well, I switched books. I started listening to The Divide by Nicolas Evans on the two hour trip to pick up my husband at the airport Monday, and I really liked it. So, I am continuing with the printed version now and putting the Sherman Alexi book on hold.

message 355: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm reading Anna Karenina, Pride and Prejudice, Lolita, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Grace and Power: The Private World of the Kennedy White House, The Golden Compass, and Swann's Way: In Search of Lost Time, Vol. 1. Yeah, all at once. I think that by trading off, I might appreciate the book more because I'll have to wait a week before picking it up again (and also be more energized to plow through tougher books, like Anna K and Swann's Way).

message 356: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Holy Cow! how are you reading all those at once? Do you ever sleep?

message 357: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Meg, It's like days of the week underwear. I read from one a day. I put them relatively in order (Swann's Way is my Friday book; Golden Compass is Saturday). Unfortunately, since I've been home from college, I haven't been reading as much as I'd like because I feel obligated to stay downstairs and converse/spend quality time with my parents. And I'm just not a whiz at blocking out the TV, which is constantly on. I need to get a move on though because I want to finish a couple before I have to deal with class again.

It's also an experiment because I'm tired of reading part of book A and then getting excited/distracted by book B and then dropping A for B.

message 358: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I read 2 at a time, but not more. You are now my official hero. Let me know how the experiment works and which book is best

message 359: by Tera, First Chick (new)

Tera | 2564 comments Mod
I just picked up Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. It looks like a skanky sequel to P&P which is totally the mood I'm feeling in. Will see if I can get into it or not.

message 360: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (chamilton12) I am currently reading Shoe Addicts Anonymous by Beth Harbison. I just started it a few days ago and am finding it a little slow to get into.

message 361: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm afraid to say that my experiment is on life-support and fading fast. I think what screwed myself up was making a list of the books I want to read this year and some of them are ones I want to read because I feel like I need to read them and others I genuinely want to read. Oh well. At least now I know that this isn't a good idea.

message 362: by Tish (new)

Tish | 59 comments Heidi--I agree with you about Thirteen Moons.

I just started War & Peace and Mansfield Park

message 363: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (sandila) | 75 comments I'm 200 or so pages into The Time Traveler's Wife. It's really good so far.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 111 comments Brenda wrote: "I just finished reading Run and I am going to read Bel Canto by the same author. It was her debut book and got good reviews. I liked Run, so I think I will be pleased with this one. I also picke..."

Brenda,
I, also, read Run first and then Bel Canto. I enjoyed them both, but Bel Canto was my favorite of the two. It's on my favorite books list. Enjoy!

message 365: by Cyndi (new)

Cyndi (chill77) I am reading Queen of Babble. I just can't seem to get into anything else.

message 367: by Thauna (new)

message 368: by Courtney (new)

message 369: by Courtney (new)

message 370: by Katie (new)

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 319 comments I'm reading He Sees You When You're Sleeping by Mary Higgins Clark & Carol Higgins Clark. Mary is one of my favorite authors of all time and I'm trying to hold on to the holidays as long as possible.

message 371: by Thauna (new)

Thauna I'm trying to get going on The Thirteenth Tale...and I'm also reading Letter to my Daughter (Maya Angelou)

message 374: by Brandie (last edited Dec 29, 2008 04:47PM) (new)

Brandie (brandiemichelle) Queen of Babble in the City and Queen of Babble gets Hitched are both really good books - I loved them!

message 375: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (chamilton12) Cyndi, you'll have to let me know how the second one is. I've been meaning to read it. I just love Meg Cabot and usually finish her books within a day or two.

message 376: by Mary (new)

Mary Crabtree (boonebridgebookscom) | 88 comments The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff

message 377: by Debbie (last edited Dec 30, 2008 05:24AM) (new)

Debbie | 415 comments I picked up "Growing Up with Roy and Dale" by Roy Rogers, Jr. at a garage sale a while back, and started on that last evening.

message 378: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm currently focusing on 3 books (down from 7, which made me kinda of scattered because I avoided certain books) and my goal is to finish one of them by tomorrow at midnight. I'm going to focus on either Grace and Power: The Private World of the Kennedy White House or The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test because I just don't see myself finishing Anna Karenina, if I want to get any sleep (which I do). I think one of those two is doable because I have 350 pages left of Electric Kool-Aid and maybe 300 left of Grace and Power. Wish me luck!

message 379: by Holli (new)

Holli That book looks so cute Jamie, do you like it?

message 380: by KrisT (new)

message 384: by Holli (new)

Holli I do too Jamie.....I'll love it then

message 385: by Heather (new)

Heather | 3 comments I have a tendency to read many books at a time until one completely hooks me in and then I can't put it down. Here's the list:

Your Sad Eyes and Unforgettable Mouth by Edeet Ravel [A Canadian Jewish author who has a wonderful style of writing:]

The Hobbit by Tolkien

La Chatelaine de Mallaig by Diane Lacombe [I'm trying to practice my French so picked up this book written by a Quebec author. It is set in Medieval Scotland.:]

Sense and Sensibility by Austen [I love Austen and was attempting to read all her works this past year but this one just isn't grabbing me!:]

Happy New Year's to all!

message 386: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Heather, I had a hard time with Sense and Sensibility too. I never finished, so let me know how it goes for you and I may decide to pick it up again.

message 387: by KrisT (new)

KrisT | 553 comments Oh Gosh Jamie, now I am going to have to add it to my list too! :)

Heather try watching the Emma Thompson version of the movie and you will pick it right back up and finish. it is just such a good story...I love Sense and Sensibility. Oh and one time I found an audio copy of it and the girl that played Jane in the Colin Firth version (my fav) of Pride and Prejudice read it and it was wonderful to listen to.

message 388: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments I'm finishing The History of Love, hopefully today. Then I'm moving on to The True Story of Hansel and Gretel. I've already read the 13th tale and loved it!!!!

message 389: by Heather (new)

Heather | 3 comments Thanks - I will make sure to get the movie Sense and Sensibility - hopefully it will inspire me!

message 390: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Methinks I'll pick up Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire or maybe The History of Love: A Novel. I'd have to buy History, but I keep hearing good things about it and I want to read it.

message 391: by Cyndi (new)

Cyndi (chill77) Lori, I have the History Of Love. I don't know when I'll ever get around to reading it. Let me know if you would like me to send it to you.

message 392: by Courtney (last edited Jan 01, 2009 02:41PM) (new)

Courtney (chamilton12) I just started Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie. I've never read anything by her and am really liking it so far. I was needing a fun, easy read.

message 393: by Jean (new)

Jean Liota (gardenlady56) | 23 comments I highly recommend Georgiana. Fascinating subject. And it's not only about a woman but also by a woman -- always a plus.

message 394: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I bought History of Love and the Susan Sontag journals. I think I'm going to start with Susan Sontag. Then I don't know what. I really need to stop buying new books and start reading ones I own so that I can weed through some and not have to cart a million books with me all the time.

message 395: by Thauna (new)

Thauna I adored History of Love and I need to buy it so I can reread it.

I'm trying to read Thirteenth Tale...having a hard time getting into it.

message 396: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I think Thirteenth Tale will probably be a new purchase for me in the not-too-far-distant future.

message 397: by Mary (new)

Mary Crabtree (boonebridgebookscom) | 88 comments I listened to the audio of Thirteenth Tale....and as an audio book this one ranks high for me. It's very well done but I generally don't like experiencing my books that way because I don't think I can accurately comment on it since i didn't "read the words".

I am currently reading "The Monsters of Templeton" and trying hard to connect with the characters...I'm half way through and so far it's kind of tedious. I get my hopes up when some storylines get introduced that feel intriguing but then we're suddenly back in present day - :(

message 398: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) | 19 comments Just started The Thirteenth Tale the other day. I'm enjoying it so far.

message 399: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I am finishing up Jodi Picoult's Vanishing Acts.

message 400: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah7299) | 303 comments I'm reading Thirteenth Tale & Secret Speakers. Love both so far.
