What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Hi all,

In my English Science Fiction/Fantasy Class at school all those years ago, one of the books we were given was something ive been trying to remeber for years but have had no luck. Please help if you can!

What I remember is that it was post apocalyptic and the main character lived in a village. I believe it was a female character but im not 100%. She kept exploring the local area much to the anoyance of her father (I think he was the tribe leader). She found a facility from the time before the apocalyptic event and explored it, eventually activating parts of it.

The twist at the end was that through out the book you have assumed it was a human you were following but at the end you discover somehow (I think some of the hints were that the chair at the facility was to big for her, she couldnt read the language, etc) that it is actually an evolved monkey or chimp and that humans are extinct.
