Char Thanks!

Gatorman My favorite by Hayder is The Devil Of Nanking. It's a stand-alone and absolutely brilliant with a gut-wrenching ending.

There are a few I have to catch up on. She is amazing.

Tony Rabig | 12 comments Revisiting some of the short stories of Theodore Sturgeon and Robert Silverberg. Any reader of horror fiction should enjoy Sturgeon's "Bright Segment" and Silverberg's "Passengers." Among others.

Char Thanks, Gator!

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I couldn't put it down, Charlene.
If it was waterproof, I would have read it in the shower. ;)

message 2062: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Mine too.

Totally blew me away.

message 2063: by Char (new)

Char It's so hard to determine "favorite". Some days for me it's this one, some days it's Boy's Life, and on some days it's Ghost Story.

LD was my first ever western novel though, and it made me wonder what else I am missing?
I know that I will be re-reading it as some point as well.

LOL! I have to figure out how to do that! I've figured out how to shower and talk on the phone. (Due to my mom's never ending chatter.)

I keep a group of favorites. My choice on any given day depends on mood, memory and genre.

I take showers so I can't hear the phone ringing...

message 2067: by Char (new)

Char I wish I could do that. I can, actually, except for when it's my mom.
If I could do that all the time I probably would never come OUT of the shower. LOL

Cathy Martin | 25 comments I enjoyed THE TENT! Thanks for ruining Hocking Hills for me :) Now I have to read a book club book The Secret Keeper, but would like some recommendations on which of Kealan's book to read after that. (I've only read The Timmy Quinn series, Kin and The Tent)

message 2074: by Char (new)

Char I was going to read Thirty Miles South Of Dry County but then I realized I had to read Currency Of Souls first. I own them both, but have another book for my group that I have to read and don't have time to sneak in two books before then, so I'm reading The Tent instead. Loving it so far!

message 2075: by Char (new)

Char Oh, I can?! Thanks! :)

message 2076: by Robert Krone (new)

Robert Krone | 45 comments Yeah, only Milestone story I've read so far is Thirty Miles, but it definitely makes me want to read more

Char LOVED The Tent!

Review to come at some point. :)

message 2078: by Sharon/ LFrog1386 (new)

Sharon/ LFrog1386 (lfrog1386) | 301 comments Finished up NOS4A2. It's a fun and easy read BUT (and this is a BIG but) it's so much like Clive Barker's Thief of Always that I'd be surprised if Barker didn't sue Hill for plagiarism. It's just that much alike.

It also lagged in the middle while some time passed and we had to get to know (and empathize) with some new characters in the latter third of the novel, leaving little time for character development. I should have felt more while I was reading it, and I didn't. I wasn't upset where I should have been nor was it ever a can't-put-down kind of book. Which is a shame, because I think Joe started off great with Heart-Shaped Box and his anthology, 20th Century Ghosts.

Squire (srboone) There'll be an ad for it in the next CD magazine. So far it's really unsettling.

Good, but rough at the same time, y'know?

message 2086: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) I hear you, Jon. Glad we have it to read though, right?

message 2087: by Robert Krone (new)

Robert Krone | 45 comments Started on F9, the newest book from Michael McBride. Will be my first read from him, but hear very good things about him, so I highly doubt this will be the only one of his I read. Will also be starting up Worm from Tim Curran soon as well. Probably after I finish F9 since that one shouldn't take me very long even though it isn't the only book I am reading.

Pet Sematary by Stephen King

message 2094: by Char (new)

Char Hey Robert! Are you the Robert from the DF forum?
I read F9 last weekend and thought it was pretty good. I liked Snowblind better, though. :)

message 2095: by Char (new)

Char Morrell is an awesome author, and I just love Tim Curran as well.
I just finished Diablero by Toby Tate. It was a 4 star read for me. He managed to combine Blackbeard with Cthuhlu successfully, believe it or not. :)

message 2096: by Robert Krone (new)

Robert Krone | 45 comments Yes, I am the Robert on the DF forum. F9 is my first McBride read, but definitely won't be my only one. Even if I didn't care for it much I likely would still give him another chance, unless I felt it was so bad it needed a 1 star rating. Have never read a book I'd consider that bad though, and very few I'd rate 2 stars even. I tend to know what I will enjoy luckily. That even goes for movies. I think the worst movie I ever bought was Blair Witch Project 2, and I only got that because it came bundled with the first movie and some Blair Witch computer games, which I ended up throwing in the trash without wasting the time to install and try them out, lol. I guess they knew the 2nd movie was bad since the whole bundle cost nothing more than what a single DVD cost, lol.

But anyway, I plan to get more McBride books when I actually have a chance to read them or they go on sale. I have a copy of The Coyote from McBride for my review of F9, so that one will be the next of his I read most likely.

message 2098: by Tony (new)

Tony Rabig | 12 comments Recently dipped into a couple of oldies but goodies, both newly reissued in paperback (ebooks to follow some time or other) by Valancourt Books: Gerald Kersh's NIGHTSHADE AND DAMNATIONS, and Charles Beaumont's THE HUNGER AND OTHER STORIES. Both out-of-print for decades until the Valancourt reissues within the last few months. The Kersh is worth the price of admission just for the story "Whatever Happened to Corporal Cuckoo?" and the Beaumont just for the chiller title story. Good stuff.
