Especially Night Shift and Skeleton Crew. Well, I think they are all great, but those are the more "horrific" offerings of his short fiction.

message 2162: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I'm looking forward to ABOMINABLE.

That way I won't be disappointed, like when I read JOYLAND.

🥀 Rose 🥀 (peacemom) | 15 comments Kealan wrote: "I thought DARK HOLLOW, THE KILLING KIND, THE WHITE ROAD, and THE WHISPERERS were standouts."

I love the Charlie Parker's series. One of my faves.

🥀 Rose 🥀 (peacemom) | 15 comments Reading under the skin Michael Fabre. Mostly because I've been seeing the previews

message 2165: by [deleted user] (new)

Right now I'm dividing my time between Strega by Vachss, and Every Dead Thing by Connolly.

I'm in a damaged sleuth mood.

🥀 Rose 🥀 (peacemom) | 15 comments Check out the trailer with Scarlett johanson. Feels a bit like Lynch. Very unnerving. Book is interesting so far. Halfway through it. Ill check back in.

message 2167: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I'm a huge Vachss fan.

Every time he uses simile, I think, "I wish I wrote that."

I reread his stuff just to enjoy his use of the language.
His short stories are amazing, too.

message 2170: by Char (new)

Char I'm a Vachss fan as well. I didn't know that about you, Clayton!
I'm a few books behind in both series', I think. *sigh*
So much good stuff to read, so little time. :(

🥀 Rose 🥀 (peacemom) | 15 comments Kealan wrote: "Thanks Jennifer! I envy you your first read of THE FIVE!"

Are you talking about the five by Robert McCammon?

🥀 Rose 🥀 (peacemom) | 15 comments I have had that one sitting on my shelf since first day it came out. Not sure why it keeps being pushed back. Sounds like you highly recommend this one. I love Robert.

The Hunter from the Woods by Robert R. McCammon

message 2177: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments It's already available, Kealan.

And it's pretty damn good.

message 2178: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments It's worth the search.

Seriously? I didn't know that!

message 2180: by Char (new)

Char I agree with Jon, that one- The Hunter from the Woods was incredibly good. And for something from McCammon? That's really saying something. :)

message 2181: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments And Burke.

message 2183: by [deleted user] (new)

Braunbeck PRODIGAL BLUES my fav

message 2184: by Char (new)

Char Kealan, I love all the authors including you.
In what way did Boy's Life influence the writing of Turtle Boy, if you don't mind my asking? Curious minds want to know. :)

message 2185: by Char (new)

Char Nice. I remembered times with my father when I read BL, some of them wonderful and some of them not so much. So I can see how it could get you to thinking. :)

message 2186: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Made me wonder about my dad.

message 2187: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) | 84 comments Jon Recluse wrote: "Made me wonder about my dad."

Guess my upbringing was fairly boring...Dad worked, and we loved every minute we had with him. (Can you tell I was a "Daddy's Girl"?) LOL!

message 2188: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I never met my dad.

I always wondered what it would have been like having one.

message 2189: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Explains one of the reasons why the Timmy Quinn series means so much to me.

message 2190: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I am too, Kealan.

message 2191: by Char (new)

Char I didn't know that about either of you. My husband was in the same boat as well.
I guess the difference is that he is a dad now. Do either of you have kids?

message 2192: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I'm a recluse....

message 2193: by Robert Krone (last edited Sep 17, 2013 10:25PM) (new)

Robert Krone | 45 comments Kealan wrote: "My father vamoosed when I was eight. I didn't realize until a reviewer pointed it out that the entire Timmy Quinn series is, in part, my attempt to decode that incident and its repercussions."

That's what happened to my dad. His dad ran out on his family when he was a kid, though in the end it was probably a good thing so he couldn't be an even worse influence as he was a scumbag and thief. My dad isn't perfect, but he is a good father, especially since he had no father figure to draw positive inspiration from.

message 2194: by [deleted user] (new)

Even though they were poor white Texas racists, I come from a long line of stable families. :)

I was going to ask that same question. My husband was adopted, but he never cared to find out about his "birth" parents. It was enough to have someone that wanted to raise him.

message 2196: by Chaundra (new)

Chaundra (chaundrala) | 2 comments Villette by Charlotte Brontë. But I just finished Sushi for Beginners. Which I was surprised to have enjoyed. I usually find chick lit boring and cliche.

message 2197: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Janz (jonathanjanz) | 14 comments Bouncing back-and-forth between Edward Lee's City Infernal and Arthur Machen's shorter work. Pretty different extremes, huh?

message 2198: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Indeed.

message 2199: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Janz (jonathanjanz) | 14 comments I thought you might appreciate that, Jon. :-)

message 2200: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Machen was the Lee of his day. THE GREAT GOD PAN was rather suggestive.
