Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Absolutely.

We read this one fairly recently as a group read, and I completely agree.

message 2203: by Robert Krone (new)

Robert Krone | 45 comments Reading an eBook ARC of The Troop by Nick Cutter. Not very far into it yet, but enjoying, despite a TON of formatting issues that they hopefully fix before it is released.

message 2204: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Martin | 25 comments just getting ready to start Currency of Souls, but debating a re-read of The Shining first. Although I loved it the first time, I'm not sure it would be an easy re-read. For those who enjoy YA books, just read two GREAT ones-The Guardian's Playlist by J Powell Ogden and finally read The Book Thief before the movie comes out-Loved both!

message 2205: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 35 comments Cathy, either choice is good. Currency Of Souls is challenging and original and The Shining is a timeless read, it stands up to at least a few reads.

message 2206: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 35 comments I am sure I will read Currency Of Souls again.

message 2207: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Martin | 25 comments haha-too many book choices is always a good thing!

message 2208: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Martin | 25 comments 'Ol Steve has some winners and losers for sure-Dr Sleep better match my expectations!!!

message 2209: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 35 comments Since Kealan took the honorable route, I will say this: You have already read The Shining. You owe it to yourself to read Currency Of Souls. Then check out Thirty Miles South Of Dry County. I'm sure The Shining will still be there when you are through.

message 2210: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments If it says Kealan Patrick Burke on the cover, read it.

message 2211: by Bill (new)

Bill (shiftyj1) | 138 comments I concur with my esteemed colleague, Jon! If it's KPB - read it!

message 2212: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Martin | 25 comments ok I'm convinced-I'm going to give this Burke guy another try-he's yet to disappoint. I am really just biding time waiting for Jack and Jill, after reading the first chapter and The Kin Sequel and Cassie Quinn(hint, hint)(Favorite book withdrawal is depressing)

message 2213: by Bill (new)

Bill (shiftyj1) | 138 comments Of course I said that and I am, in fact, reading The Shining for the HA group read this month, but Currency of Souls is next in line for sure!

message 2214: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Martin | 25 comments haha-hypocrite!

message 2216: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 35 comments Haha. I read Currency last month. It rocked Bill. I know you will like it.

message 2217: by Bill (new)

Bill (shiftyj1) | 138 comments Yeah. I know. *hangs head in shame*

message 2218: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 35 comments I concur with Jon, too. Mr. Burke has never disappointed me, and I have read most of his work.

Echo *SMACK*--even though I just read Currency of Souls, myself! However, it did get up there BEFORE The Shining. 30 Miles...is on my wish list, and I just picked up a h/c of Taverns of the Dead, because it was edited by a certain KPB. :)

message 2220: by Char (new)

Char I recently read Currency myself, as well as Thirty Miles South. I thought they both rocked. Are there any plans for Milestone in the future or has that town visible in your rearview mirror?

Man, tough crowd, Kealan!

I am reading as fast as I can! :) I promise my next read will be KPB!

message 2222: by Char (new)

Char I didn't know that, Kealan, thanks! I'm kind of fascinated with the town, the Bicycle man, Eddy's, etc...

message 2223: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Janz (jonathanjanz) | 14 comments Kealan wrote: "An excellent and still effective story."

One of my favorite novellas of all time (if indeed the word count equals a novella--I've never taken the time to check).

And Jon, I imagine it was rather suggestive for its day. Machen insinuated rather than stating things explicitly, but what was insinuated was far more explicit than what most would've dared to insinuate back then.

message 2224: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Janz (jonathanjanz) | 14 comments Charlie Grant was/is a rock star. A subtle rock star, yes, but one of the very best ever. The Sound of Midnight still scares the crap out of me.

message 2225: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Charlie's hints and suggestions have fueled quite a few of my nightmares over the years.

message 2226: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Between Charlie and the Irish fella, I'm really starting to enjoy insomnia....

message 2227: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Kealan wrote: "Okay, but don't lose any sleep ov...oh, wait..."

:)

message 2228: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Charlie's books had such an impact on me, I once tried to draw a map of Oxrun Station.

message 2229: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments I had one of those huge pieces of graph paper. I hung it on the wall of my room, and took it down to work on while I was reading.

Wish I still had it.

message 2230: by Char (new)

Char That sounds pretty cool, Jon. :)

Kealan, I would be very interested in anything more about Milestone. Was the bicycle man a story from your youth or an Irish story or did you just make it all up? I was very much unsettled by him.

message 2231: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 35 comments I am excited Milestone shall go on.

message 2232: by Char (new)

Char Yeah, well thanks a lot. You successfully transferred him from your nightmare to mine. :)

message 2233: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Sharing is caring. ;)

message 2234: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) | 84 comments Jon Recluse wrote: "Sharing is caring. ;)"

Exactly! :)

message 2235: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Right now, I'm reading The Troupe by Robert Jackson Bennett .

I have to say, it's a remarkably good dark fantasy.

Irene Well Worth A Read I'm halfway through The Devil You know by Adrian Lilly and then I'll be starting Dr. Sleep by Stephen King

message 2237: by Char (new)

Char I'm currently reading an independent author's book Knock Knock. I'm about 25% in and it's pretty good so far. But man oh man am I looking forward to Dr. Sleep!

message 2238: by Char (new)

Char I've been meaning to read that one. I had it in my hand at a thrift shop two weeks ago and I decided not to get it. Sometimes I could just kick myself.

message 2239: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) | 84 comments Of course, Charlene won't start on Dr. Sleep until my hardcover arrives from Amazon, right Char? :)

message 2240: by Char (new)

Char Kimberly, I am going to try to wait for you. Really.

message 2241: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments Kealan wrote: "So far it's amazing, Charlene, and appeals to one of my secret, long-forgotten loves: architecture."

I gotta read this book!

message 2242: by Char (new)

Char What kind of Kindle did you get, Kealan?

It is quite excellent, Mr. Recluse.

message 2244: by Char (new)

Char Nice! I hope you like it. :)

message 2245: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments You know he's gonna be hooked. :)

message 2246: by Char (new)

Char I only know I was with the two I've got. :)

message 2247: by Jon Recluse (new)

Jon Recluse | 2066 comments You know I am, too. :)

message 2248: by [deleted user] (new)

I really want to read Devil in the White City. I'm going to make that a priority...among the other many, many priorities.

message 2249: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Martin | 25 comments Devil in the White City was a Great read-I ha never heard of holmes before this book and it was fascinating to see inside his mind. Plus the World Fair/architecture aspect made a really fun book group trip to Chicago!!!!

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) | 84 comments Kealan wrote: "The new Paperwhite, Charlene."

Never thought I'd enjoy digital reading so much until I got the Paperwhite. Still like to have an e-book, and physical book going at the same time, though.... Habits are hard to break! :)
