QueenAmidala28 Don't get me wrong, I LOVE reading but after about 4-5 books at a time my mind shuts down and I can't read for about 4 days! Does anyone else get like this or is it just me? If you do experience this, what do you do to solve it?

message 2: by Mary (new)

Mary (marybt) | 336 comments I get that way on Friday afternoons after I've worked all week. I call it "brain exhaustion." I just veg out in front of the TV for the evening and give people dumb blank looks when they talk to me. lol.

Viola | 1014 comments I saw the title "Reading Rutt", and I thought of something totally different! I'm in a Reading Rutt right now in the sense that I feel like I've been reading a string of mediocre to bad books. I'm longing for a really good book that engrosses me and that I can LOVE.

As for your Reading Rutt. I'd say that it's perfectly fine to take a break for a few days. There's nothing wrong with that.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 4853 comments I dont know whether what I experience can be called reading rutt, but some days I keep on changing books - nothing satisfies me, and this mood may last for a couple of days till I latch on to a book I like

Jennifer W | 2175 comments QueenAmidala, I'll get like that after I've read a really amazing book. I think it took me several days to pick up another book after I finished The Book Thief. I was just too in love with the characters and the way things turned out to want to push them out of my mind with new characters and plot that wouldn't even compare.

Do you read multiple books at a time? I find I have to so I always have something to read. I'll start book A then when I'm about 100 pages into it (and know I'm going to continue reading it) I'll pick up book B. When I finish book A, I can pick up book C, but if that takes a little bit to grow on me, I'm still reading book B. If I happen to finish all of the books I'm reading within a few days of each other then, yes, it can take me a few days before I get back to reading something.

Though, at the moment, I'm with Viola, nothing has really grabbed me lately.

That happens to me too. It happened in June, as a matter of fact.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I can't imagine not reading for several days. I read every evening - go to bed early for the privilege.

That's what I thought, too! And I so agree with Jennifer W. - The Book Thief is outstanding. I also recommend Generation Loss (which is kind of a gritty mystery set in Maine.)

I wish I had more time to read! This year, my goal was to read an hour a day, and my Kindle has really helped with that. But summer is my busiest time (kids and hubby out of school...)

I prefer reading two books at a time, three at most if one is an audiobook. I would find 4-5 a bit overwhelming, and I would probably follow them with a few days off from reading.

Kiana Davenport | 51 comments @ Jennifer W...I totally agree with you, THE BOOK THIEF was amazing, brilliant in its uniqueness, and heartbreaking. The characters reverberate in your head long after. A year back I read with the author Markus Zusak, who's from Australia. He got the idea for the book from his parents who lived in Germany during the rise of Hitler. He was a sweet, quiet man about mid-thirties. Very modest. But excited when he talked about his little girl. Sadly, I had not read the book yet and never got to tell him how brilliant I thought it was. But I wrote a 5star review for it on Amazon. I wanted to give it ten stars! Like you, after reading it I could not read anything for days. Happy reading!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I don't get tired of reading. Reading is my entertainment. I even read and watch tv at the same time.

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 101 comments I have a lot in my book review queue and sometimes I just want to leave it alone and pick one from my list of books that I really want to read.

I could never do that, lol. TV and knitting is about as far as I go!

I have a book review blog, and I feel the same way. But I'm a pretty bad at keeping up with the blog, lol, since I intersperse the books I *have* to read with the ones I *want* to read.

Rachel (wolfewoman) | 24 comments Sometimes I get the equivalent of book fidgets - I keep picking books up, reading a couple of chapters, then putting them down, can't get into them. I do this for several days, until I have a stack of books. Finally, something clicks, and I can settle down and read a book through. Then I can go back & finish all the ones I've started. Not sure what sets it off.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) @Brenda I am watching Star Trek Next Generation season 4 and reading "A Dance With Dragons".

Neko | 138 comments Yeah, I get into rutts for all different sorts of things..Usually it's with entertainment- TV, books, gaming.

I tend to pile my to play/read/watch waaaaayyyy to high then I just get daunted and do nothing except let the piles grow bigger and bigger :(

And I also get into a rutt especially after reading a very good book and move onto something less than interesting..Like right now actually..loll

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 229 comments I get like this at times. I just finished a book and the essence of the story and characters has stuck with me more than I expected. I've started a new book, but I just can't get into it yet because I'm still thinking about the last book. I've taken the last two nights out to veg in front of the tv and hope to get back into it tonight.

That's the worst. It's like you want a book as good as the one you just put down, but you can't find one good enough! That's how I felt after reading "The Hunger Games" trilogy.

message 19: by Neko (new)

Neko | 138 comments Michelle, oh no :/ I just started reading them..Finished the 1st book quickly and now onto the 2nd one..i fear what i read afterwards..lol :s

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 101 comments @ MICHELLE - I agree. To be perfectly honest, some of the titles on my "to review" list aren't as interesting or as good as those that I "want" to read.

Same here. I was left unimpressed by the first book in the Hunger Games trilogy that now, I have no intentions of reading the other two.

message 21: by Viola (new)

Viola | 1014 comments Cate -- Hm... I think you must have misinterpreted Michelle's comment.

Michelle -- my friend was that way after The Hunger Games Trilogy. She ended up re-reading it, and then couldn't find the right book afterwards. At the time when I was talking to her about it, I think I called it a "reading funk".

Lol, I actually did mean that I liked the Hunger Game series; although, I know a few people (like my middle daughter) who didn't care for it at all.

Now, I'm trying to read the first book in the Immortal Instruments series (since, at first glance, I thought it might be like HG), but it's just not resonating with me. I think I've saturated my need to read about angst-ridden teenagers for a while, lol.

Now, I'm reading The Lonely Polygamist which is a refreshing change. I'm hooked on this one!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I liked the first book of the Mortal Instruments series better than the entire series of the Hunger Games. The first one was okay. The second one was better. and the third one left me disappointed.
