Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I would have joined the optimists group to be honest but it was half empty when I looked.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I tried to joint the Great Disasters group but my laptop crashed and now nothing in my house works...

Mhairi Simpson (mhairisimpson) | 1158 comments I tried to join the pessimists group but they told me they'd probably be defunct by the end of the month.

message 54: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) Do you have to be agnostic to join the procrastinators group?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Not sure Ian. I had a look at the agnostics group. It might work but I will believe it when I see it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments There's no atheists group.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I was going to join the Magician's group but it disappeared.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I was going to join the MPD group but my alternative personalities couldn't agree on what to call us.

message 66: by Andre Jute (last edited Nov 06, 2011 12:57AM) (new)

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments I'm on ROBUST, which I founded as an exchange of intellectuals, where strong views can be aired without disturbing some barrowboy, limpwrist or superannuated puddinghat (or at least without having such undesirables interfere with free speech). There are no rules, zero, zilch. It's been a big disappointment to me. After a few demonstrations of people who overstepped the bounds being torn apart while the theoretical moderators (Claudine and me) stood by smiling vacantly, everyone is so excruciatingly polite, Amazon executives are lurking, taking notes! On the other hand, you can read interesting views in almost every post, and laughter raises the roof every hour on the hour. Maybe that makes up for the absence of blood on the carpet. I'm also on small groups with several authors, because they invited me, and those depend for their interest on the questions they frame at the start. And I'm in the private working editorial group Editorial Menagerie, with several parties from here. Together with Kindleboards, KUforum, Facebook and Twitter, that makes for about a 100 messages a day, which is too many, but it is all so interesting... I rarely go on Amazon anymore; too unpleasant.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Now is not the time to go back to amazon Andre. You will think you have gone back a year.

message 68: by Nell (new)

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 212 comments I joined the Authors and Readers and the UK Book Club, also the Book Promotion by Genre Group, but there are no discussions or other activities over there.

I thought I'd browsed through all the different groups, but new ones like ROBUST keep popping up to distract me, although I've resisted so far. Goodreads is something of a labyrinth - I'm half expecting to turn a corner and meet the Minotaur.

message 69: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments His name is Edgar, Nell. You can meet him in Carl Ahsmore's first Time Hunters book!

message 70: by Jerold (new)

Jerold Last (goodreadscomjerold_last) | 52 comments Hi: I'm in several groups, but the most interesting is the spy novel interest group. I'd tell you more, but none of you needs to know.....

If any of you are in the [Around the World in 80 Books] Group Read Poll and Nominations!, please check out the current poll for Which book would you like for our April Book of the Month, set in Latin America? My novel, The Ambivalent Corpse, is one of the choices and I could use your support. Thank you.

message 71: by Kate (new)

Kate (littlekate1) | 574 comments I joined a few groups when I first started on here: helping hand to new authors, historical fictionistas, a group that reads classics and another that has free books.... but they are all neglected I found my home here... although I think this is the 'procrastinators' group as much as kindle reads. Its definately much more active than any of the others.

message 72: by Kate (new)

Kate (littlekate1) | 574 comments Ps: i just randomly posted that comment to demonstrate how good a procratinators group this is... having turned my laptop on 2 hours ago, I've not yet opened my work file lol

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

I joined a few other groups on goodreads, but haven't visited any of them in months - spend most of my time here...

Isn't that just about all of us?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You're not using our group to recruit for your group, are you Alan?

Surely not. That would be cheeky!

message 80: by Pete (new)

Pete Carter (petecarter) | 522 comments Keeping on topic, as soon as Alan let's me in, I'll belong to two groups! I guess we all have to learn by experience where our true home lies, and in that respect I am only two days old!

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments I'm a member of ROBUST, a group without any rules.

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments Alan wrote: "Andre Jute wrote: "I'm a member of ROBUST, a group without any rules."

A sure sign of chaos!"

Not at all. Everyone is excruciatingly polite because they know that if they are rude, or if they are stupid, the intellectuals will rip them apart, and there are no moderators to save them.

message 84: by Andre Jute (last edited Jan 08, 2014 07:49PM) (new)

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments Alan wrote: Your phrase-'excruciatingly polite'says it all..utterly boring!

Oh, I don't see how good manners stop people being interesting. I didn't say they mouthed platitudes or me-too-I'm-also-here messages, which is what makes most fora such a waste of time. I said that if they were stupid, they'd be ripped apart. In the early days we saw quite a bit of blood on the ROBUST carpet as those with an exaggerated sense of entitlement without the brains to back it up fell victim to silly statements about, for instance, global warming.

But if you prefer to discuss only the subjects moderators consider safe, that's entirely up to you. It has the great benefit that when you make a mistake, you can shelter behind the moderators. I'm not too big on the nanny-state.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Alan, we do not personally attack people in our group.

message 86: by Andre Jute (new)

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments You were so bored that you went and made a list?

Alan says: "Speaking from my position as a Moderator of a really
friendly group, i find the words and language you use
pompous and hideously unedifying. Here are just a few:-
Barrow boys/Superannuated pudding hats/Limp wrists/
Undesirables/Intellectuals will rip them apart/Blood on
the carpet/Silly statements about Global Warming*etc.
*As to your remark on Global Warming, you obviously have
all the answers..so come on,enlighten everybody!If you
are the Moderator on Robust..God help the group!I find
you to be an individual that seems so uptight, that you
must squeak when you walk.If you think Zon executives
are sitting around all day taking notes on the "tripe"
you describe..you are living in a dream world-WAKE UP!"

You should pay attention, Alan. I already told you ROBUST doesn't have a moderator. Goodreads just sticks the name "moderator" on someone. There is no moderation function. Or are you putting yourself forward to dumb down the language?

As for the rest, if you want only limp language, then don't read me. If you set yourself up to be outraged, and go out of your way to consume that which outrages you, as you've done here, by all means enjoy your outrage. But don't try to drag me into a juvenile bun fight.

The group where you're moderator sounds really friendly! I'll be sure to send some dull people to it.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Lets end this 'discussion' here guys. It's not beneficial to anyone and you are just riling each other up which is not what we are about. As Patti says we do not personally attack people in our group. Controversial topics are welcome but we always respect the other people and their opinions.

Anyway, getting back on topic... I joined a spanish group to try and help improve my spanish, it doesn't seem to be working yet :o(

message 88: by Andre Jute (new)

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments Thanks, Jud. I hope you improve your Spanish.
