Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I thought I'd start a thread for people who want suggestions/help in looking for a certain book for a challenge.

message 2: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I need a time-travel book for a challenge. Something other than Karen Marie Moning and Lynn Kurland. I've also read Shades of Twilight/Son of the Morning. I would like something with a little romance in it. (Duh!)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I really haven't read that many but I loved A Knight in Shining Armor (Montgomery #16). Some ppl didn't though.

Are you looking for them going back in time or coming forward in time?

Tess Mallory and Melissa Mayhue have a few. They were good. Not great IMO, though. Johanna Lindsey has Until Forever that I read but it was just okay for me. Jude Deveraux has Legend that was also just okay for me.

message 4: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Thanks, Pamela. I'm not in the mood for a re-read of AKiSA. I know I read Legend by Jude Deveraux a while ago, but I can't remember it, LOL! I'll check out the other authors and books.

I don't know if you're into sci-fi/ fantasy, but I really enjoyed Twist by Colby Hodge. It was really different from anything that I normally read.

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 361 comments Do you like classic (old) sci-fi? There's Robert Heinlein's Time Enough for Love by Robert A. Heinlein . The time travel is in the latter part of the book. The protagonist travels from the far future to WWI. Lots of adventure, sex, romance, and a pretty convoluted plot.

message 7: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Thanks, ✿Michelle✿ & Sandra! I'll check my library. :)

Megan | 1285 comments One of my favorites is Bridge over Time Bridge over Time (Harlequin Superromance No. 592) by Brenda Hiatt

message 9: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Thanks, Megan. That one looks pretty good. I'll need to check my library.

Thanks again, everyone for the helpful suggestions! :) I almost bought Lynn Kurland's latest One Magic Moment by Lynn Kurland today (well, yesterday, since it is ater MN)... but then I remembered I needed to pay the mortage. :)

message 10: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) hmmm Mortgage? Book? Mortgage? Book? Such a dilemma!

message 11: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments It is! I only thought it might be best to keep the roof over my head so that the books I currently own would stay dry, come winter. :)

message 12: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments Lisa Kay, if you're still looking for a time travel romance, I saw on today's Pixel of Ink email that Amazon has a freebie : Legacy by Jeanette Baker by Jeanette Baker

message 13: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Thanks, CaroB. I'm having trouble with my Kindle for PC. I need to call Amazon and get them to trouble shoot it. I thought I had it fixed, but nope.

message 14: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments go to PixelofinkDOTcom. they also have a link to freebies and bargain books for the Nook and the Kindle

message 15: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Thanks, CaroB! That worked as I downloaded it to my Nook for PC instead of my Kindle for PC.

message 16: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments no worries Lisa Kay! I saw it and remembered you'd been looking for that sub-genre :-)

message 17: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I actually downloaded a couple of books. Thanks for the site, CaroB.!

message 18: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Thanks for all the help with the time travel books, ladies. Now I'm looking for books for a sub-genre category - mystery! Here is the definition:

Crime Thriller: Suspense in the crime story comes from wondering whether the plan will work. We sometimes find ourselves rooting for the bad guys because they are smart, organized, and daring. The ride will be a bumpy one.

I'm sorry I can't think of any at the moment, but I'm looking forward to seeing what others recommend.

So time-travel crime thrillers Lisa Kay?? Or just Crime thrillers? Think I may be getting a bit mixed up.

message 21: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments If it's just Crime Thrillers you're after Lisa Kay, there's one I just got sent a message about called Case Histories. It's on bookswap from a woman called Sally Pierce.

message 22: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments No, CaroB, I don't mean a blend of time-travel and Crime Thrillers. I'm looking more for something similar to a heist or maybe even a political assassination. Something where we read the bad guys precision planning.

message 23: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments I'm looking for a historical/antebellum for a challenge. Any suggestions? Lisa Kay I know you are a fan of Kleypas who is mainly a historical writer does she have anything from the antebellum era?

message 24: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments which war Tracey? I'm pretty sure there's a Laura Lee Guhrke that might be early 20th Century.

message 25: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Tracey, When Strangers Marry by Lisa Kleypas is considered "antebellum". It is set in Natchez, Louisiana, 1805. Kleypas wrote it in 1992. Not her best work, IMHO, but it is interesting to see the development (by leaps and bounds) of this writer through the years. Not everyone improves this much. I believe she recently when back and changed a few things, but still...

message 26: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments Wedding of the Season is early 1900s.

message 27: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments I'm in the mood for southern belles. Pre-civil war south...

message 28: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments Btw is there any reference for definitions of all the abbreviations like IMHO?

message 29: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Here on GoodReads? I don't know of one. This is a nice one b/c you can quickly click on the letter you are looking up: Internet Acronyms Dictionary

IMHO - I meant as "In My Humble Opinion." However, looking at this website, I notice that it can also mean "In My Honest Opinion". Interesting, as it definitely has a slightly different tone.

That's a weird one for me. Why would you ever give an dishonest opinion?? Aren't all opinions honest by default? IMO, I'd rather leave the H out :-)

message 31: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments Oh that's too funny! I thought IMHO was some sort of description for the type of book. LOL! I see things like SFR, etc used on this website and I'm still trying to figure them all out. :)

message 32: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (last edited Sep 20, 2011 11:13AM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments SFR? All I can think of are "Single Family Residence", Tracey, but here on GRs it probably means "Science Fiction Romance". If I had to guess...

message 33: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments LOL, yeah I figured out from the context of the rest of the posts that it did mean Science Fiction Romance... Good to know that there's not some lingo that everyone gets but me :)

message 34: by funnichic0318 (new)

funnichic0318 | 2 comments I need help finding heros with beards, goatees, or mustaches. I have read some but don't want to do any re-reads for this particular challenge. I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks!

message 35: by funnichic0318 (new)

funnichic0318 | 2 comments I am also looking for a book about a farmer or in which the main or important secondary character is a cook, chef, or baker.

message 36: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Amanda, have you seen listopia's Best Bearded Heroes? That has a pretty good list.

Also, you are welcome to look at my bookshelf entitled: vocation-chef.

Off hand, for farm (and some of my favs), I can think of:
The Texan's Wager (Wife Lottery, #1) by Jodi Thomas Daniel's Bride by Linda Lael Miller Eden by Carolyn Davidson

message 37: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (quill_n_ink) | 33 comments This isn't for a challenge; I just want to read some Gothic Romance. (If there is a more appropriate thread, please let me know.) I've been searching GR and Amazon and I've found a few books that sound interesting. I know PNR and Gothic Romance genres tend to overlap a bit but I'm looking for something... different. I'm not looking for a YA book; really looking for an adult or new adult book, definitely romance, maybe with some 18+ situations.

message 38: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Hmmmm...going to have to think on this one, Michelle. All I know of are old ones, like, by Victoria Holt. :o)

message 39: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Plus, not anything too steamy in her books.

message 40: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (quill_n_ink) | 33 comments I read a few VH novels back in high school. Classics! Might reread a few of those; I think my mom still has some of them.

I found Jane Godman; just read Legacy of Darkness, Jago Legacy #1. I finished it earlier today (it's a novella) and it was just what I was looking for. Dark, mysterious, brooding, etc. Some steamy scenes (not too graphic IMO). I'm looking forward to reading the next book. Someone else recommended Amanda Quick; will give her books a try, too.

message 41: by ShoSho , Moderator (new)

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments Heroes Are My Weakness by Susan Elizabeth Phillips is not really Gothic but has a Gothic feel to it.

message 42: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Oh, yes, Amanda Quick does have that feel to her books.

Although I wasn't looking for a contemporary romance, I like the description and it does sound "gothic". Added it to my TBR shelf. TY!
