Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments August is National Inventor's Month. There is a genre devoted to inventions. It's called Steampunk. The challenge this month is to read a book from that genre. For ideas go here:

http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/59...
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/37...

(By the way, Cecily, here's your chance to read a China Miéville book. I noticed that Perdido Street Station was on one of the listopias above.)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I love that 2 points for already being on TBR - clever!

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh! Darwinia counts, and I've owned it and been meaning to read it for years! Yay! Darwinia by Robert Charles Wilson

Cheryl (cherylllr) heh ;)

May Steampunk! Never read a steampunk before, not quite my type, but I'm willing to be challenged. I'm happy to find Leviathan (Leviathan, #1) by Scott Westerfeld in my local library and I've started reading it.

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments That's great, May! I've not read steampunk before either. I hope you enjoy it!

message 8: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh my 15 yo son loves Leviathan! And right now he's reading Skybreaker and loving it even better than the first book in that series, Airborn, which books I assume also count for this. I enjoyed Fever Crumb which I read on his recommendation.

Lots of YA choices for people just dipping their toes into the genre! :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments I'm going to read The Gaslight Dogs. It will be my first foray into steampunk as well.

message 10: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments I debated on that one too, Amber.

message 11: by May (new)

May I can see why your son loves Leviathan, Cheryl. It's been a fun read for me so far, quite hard to put down actually.

Oh I managed to borrow City of Ember from my library as well. Seems like an interesting story.

Steampunk should receive more attention it deserves. Thanks for choosing this genre, Janice.

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments It seems to be consistently rated high, Judy. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

message 13: by Alison (new)

Alison Forde | 269 comments I'm going for the old school Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea which is on one of the steam punk lists. Steam punk from the age of steam!

Janice (jamasc) | 59907 comments I want to read Winter's Tale someday. It's not high on the top of my wishlist though. I took it off one day and then put it back on.
