Jane | 221 comments I thought this was a wonderful book. I put off reading it for so long and then kicked myself repeatedly when I had to read it for book club and realized what a great book it was. The perspective alone --- Alice is touching and sad but determined.

message 3: by Michele (new)

Michele I have just finished this book and it was a wonderful book, like Jane, I had it there to read for ages, I cannot believe I left it so long.

message 4: by Meg (new)

Meg (mkop359) I also thoroughly enjoyed this book. In fact, I managed to finish in one day - even at only 300 pages, that is quite an accomplishment and compliment from me!

My grandfather recently passed away. He suffered from Alzheimers. I found it difficult, but comforting in a way to experience some of what he must have gone through.

I particularly enjoyed the progression of the to-do list from before to after the diagnosis. And the questions she sets up for herself were heart-wrenching to watch her answer.

Lisa P | 1056 comments I am glad to hear that so many have already enjoyed Still Alice. I am really looking forward to reading this one. My father-in-law was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers...I can't imagine what it must be like to live with this disease, and hoping for some insight into what he must be going through. I am expecting to shed quite a few tears along the way.

message 6: by Kristen (new)

Kristen I loved this book. Three of my grandparents died from consequences of Alzheimer's. This story was difficult for me but also freeing in a way because it dealt with certain issues my family never faced directly. A very memorable read.

message 7: by Ioana (new)

Ioana I loved the book. I don’t know anybody with Alzheimer, and still, the book was hard to read at times. One of the best books I read this year.

message 8: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (tracey1970) I am not taking part in the group read, but I read this book a couple of months ago. It is a fabulous book A great insight into Alzheimers

message 9: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) I thought it painted an accurate picture of Alzheimers, and how it impacts both the person with the dementia and their families. I've worked in healthcare, and occasionally you will find a family in total denial or that will expect the doctor to "cure" the Alzheimer's patient. So it's wonderful that people are getting information about the disease in a well-written, readable novel.

message 10: by Beth (new)

Beth My in-person book club discussed this book at one of our meetings. We all thought it was very well done (the author is a neuroscientist herself, so she knows of what she speaks) and it provoked an interesting discussion. Some members were dealing with family members with Alzheimer's, and we discussed for a while what we would do if we were diagnosed with it. Would we consider killing ourselves or not?

message 11: by Angie (new)

Angie (seren-lucy) Wow! This book is so moving and thought-provoking. One of the best books I have read in a long time. Every time I put the book down (which wasn't often!) I began analysing how I went about my everyday tasks and how this must be for someone with Alzheimers disease. I thought it was a great decision to have the book narrated by Alice, and was moved to tears on a number of occasions. I'll definitely be looking out for more books by Lisa Genova

Ragle | 1 comments I´m still not finished with this book yet but it´s already clear for me that I´ll let me check for the presence of genetic predisposition.

message 13: by Carly (new)

Carly Svamvour (faganlady) | 220 comments I read that about 6 months ago - I didn't really like it much.

message 14: by Linda (new)

Linda | 49 comments I read this book when it first came out. Really loved it. I also enjoyed Left Neglected. It was excellent but not quite as good as "Still Alice".

message 15: by Trisha (new)

Trisha I am about halfway through and I find the book to be so sad. To think that we work so hard to take care of ourselves by eating healthy, exercising, etc.., yet there is still that fear of being betrayed by our own body in a way that we have no control over. It is a frightening thought. As a mother, I have a quiet worry in the back of my mind because I know that I will not be with my children forever, but to imagine not being able to recognize their faces and not know who they are is heart-breaking. My heart goes out to anyone who has experienced this disease.

message 16: by Karen K. (new)

Karen K. Miller (karenkm) | 4 comments I read Still Alice several months ago. I work with people who are developmentally disabled, several of whom have Alzheimer's. I think this should be a must read for people who work with people who have Alzheimer's. Maybe the workers would better understand where the clients are experiencing. Lisa Genova is one of the authors that I follow. She has been doing great question and answer pages. I'm not sure how to get involved in that except to click on her name and become a fan.
