Is it just the number of pages in the main portion of the book (think non-fiction)?
OR
Does it include all the ancillary pages including notes, index, bibliography, etc.?
I would think from Amazon's and a publisher perspective that it would be the total number of physical pages. However, from a Goodreads Progress Bar perspective I think it should be the main body of work as the notes, index, and bibliography are supplemental and may be referred to at any point. Including them would give a false impression on the progress bar by under representing your true place in the book.
In fact, if you are on page 475 of a 500 page book (body) the progress bar should show 95% complete in my opinion. If all the ancillary data is included you could easily have another 100 pages or more. In this case you are only 80% complete when in reality; there are only 25 pages to go in the body of the work. This results in some books never showing more than, say 85% complete, even when the reader is nearly finished.
I'm hoping to establish a standard operating procedure for this to which we would all conform.
